I tried following the instructions on this web site on how to rip a dvd and get it to the divX format. I got the vob file and changed it to a divX. But now i have a seperate .wav file for the audio. Is there any way to lay the audio on top of the divx file and sync it up.

    any help appreciated

Open that divx video in VirtualDub. Video -> Direct Stream Copy. Audio -> WAV Audio... Open your Wav file. Then File -> Save as AVI..

    try lowering the colour quality.
    16bit maybe.

if its still lags than you need a new pc :)
do try ffdshow (available at software section) its libavcodec uses slightly low cpu usage compare to xvid/dvix decoder
