Depends which opteron, the 175 is equivalent to a the E6300 I suppose, the 185 maybe the E6550, but the Opterons aren't as overclockable.

yea i have th 175 in my box i was just wondering to see what one would be the equivelent if i ever switched to intel ..
im not realy the over clocking type of guy with this processer it i have a little AMD sempron that i over clocked as long as you cool it well it can do some pretty amazing things the opteron already works amazing:) with the design i do , what would the jump be if i was going to do graphic design on an intel?

if the programs you use can make use of a quad core, quite a lot. Q6600s aren't that expensive nowadays, and you'd get a lot more done with one.

No problem. A proper quad-core responsive program will probably give you a 150% performance boost by using a Q6600.

Viiv is just a new technology implemented in most modern Intel CPUs. To most, it doesn't really mean much.
