Even if Italy win they are still going home to scandal and the prospect of several major teams being kicked out of their major league (Juventus, AC Milan, Lazio and Fiorentina). The hearing about Italian match fixing has just been hushed up and delayed until after the cup. I know it doesn't say anything negative about their ability to win games, but it does say a lot about the honesty of the game they play and their ethics. Several people have resigned or committed suicide so far, you've gotta think cheating is rife when people start jumping from buildings without even being punished yet...

Just to tell you guys a prosecutor has just requested Juve be demoted to Serie C or lower(somehow),AC Milan, Lazio and Fiorentina will be demoted to Serie B, which is not so bad.

I think an Italy-France final would be awesome. A great rematch of Euro 00.

Italy was amazing they said that germany was going to win but italy messed with them an won. 2 amazing goals at the end of the match. it was the most exixting game i've seen yet. If france goes to the finals stehn they have a match but if portugal goes italy will smoke them. Either way ital has a good chance.

    Hi,

A few questions about the World Cup. First how are the teams selected to participate and who ranks them. Secondly, there was a game tied ( I believe) and one team was selected as the winner...how does this happen? Is the World Cup like the world series of soccer? Sorry to seem ignorant but google did not provide the answers in an acceptable format.

    Matt,

you have to qualify for the World Cup first. Only the host nation is guaranteed a spot. The qualifying matches are played before the World Cup. That takes place over a period of nearly 2 years. Every country can participate in that. The teams play in local groups (several groups in Europe, Asia, Africa, one in South America and so on). The best teams then qualify for the World Cup.
In the World Cup the 32 teams play in 8 groups of 4 teams each first. Tied games are possible. After that the best 16 teams (2 top ranked of each group) play in a playoff modus - best of one. If the game is tied after the regular time, you will have overtime (2 x 15 minutes) first. There is no sudden death. So if one teams scores, the other can still come back and make a goal. If the game is tied after overtime, there will be a penalty shootout. It'll be played until one team wins, but every team can shoot at least 5 times.

    Any more questions, ask.

    Mike

Good answer @mikeeagle. Just forgot to mention that there's another group for North America and Caribean.

Nope, I didn't forget. That's why I wrote "and so on". I didn't want to go too much into detail. There's also the group where Australia, New Zealand and these exotic islands play ;-)

Who said Portugal will lose with Italy?
    And why?
    Are they better players?
So, why they need Portuguese players in their teams?
    We´ll see that at finals.
Today is time to eat some french rooster.

I would vote for Torsten Frings goal, too. I also liked the one by Philip Lahm in the same game and the one by Argentina against Serbia when they played more than 30 passes before making it.

How do they have Portuguese players? They're all Italian, there's 1 player who wasn't born in Italy, Mauro Camoranesi(Argentina), and he's of Italian background. No Portuguese players.

I wouldn't say Italy would smoke Portugal either. It would be a good game though. Italy has better goaltending, and defense, no one can argue with that. But Portugal has very good offensive talent(Maniche, Deco, Figo, Ronaldo, Pauleta, so on...)If it went into shotouts, I think Italy would win, because of Buffon.
