yes, this is a bit of a reality. however what i did notice is once i changed the server to a high quality system (not a dm500) the client dm500 systems now seem to behave much better. so guess the lesson is that if you want quality you must pay for quality. and that quality must be at the server

I don't understand is the issues latency (ISP issue) the Dreambox itself or the c line source?

all, latency is a problem, how fast the dreambox can respond to requests, quality of the c-line source. what is say is that if you invest in a quality central system your clients are less impacted

What is the next step up from the 500S as a quality central server? Not too interested in hard drives or even HD.

good question, the dm500 is no longer supported by dream multimedia so all units bought these days are chinese clones. the best advice is to search dreams website and see what their current base model is and buy that one. as i explained in previous posts i recently put in a vu+ duo but that is a 500euro job as compared to 60euro for a dm500. your choice.

Anyone advise as to the next level of dreambox clone after the 500 in terms of cost that would be a better server or what do you look for that determines a good server.

did explain that clones are rubbish. if you want to go this direction well thats fine. i've already explained over and over again that no matter what the clone they are all rubbish. still your choice

Fair enough, I appreciate your advise. However the box you have is a little expensive for me so I'm interested in hearing what people think is the next best clone server to the 500S and why.

know what you sat kopycat. to be honest i would be really interested to an answer to this question from members. my only experience is dm500 and dm800 and both are very poor as servers. has anyone out there a better solution. the answer would be a help to many.

fintann is correct in terms of top quality ,it of course depends on your budget so interms of if you want sd or hd channels on a budget well then the dm800 is hd but it has no hdmi socket (what you use is more of an adaptor but your clients will recieve hd channels as long as you are paying for them).the cost well some where between £145 and £180 plus p+p ,thats between 170 euro and 220 euro inc p+p.an original dm500hd has a hdmi socket but it costs in excess of £300 ,other sd boxes are the dm7020 ( a great box in my opion at a cost of about 220 euro inc p+p but without hd its hardly worth the money.if you want hd on a budget well then the dm800 is the box for you ,if you want a great server and have a few hundred euro to spare then fintann is 100% correct the vu+ duo is the way to go . it has hd and dual tuners and much more .

hooter, bit of research indicates spiderbox is a poor choice. problem after problem. i do not buy a box lightly and did investigate this box but reviews were less than encouraging

But have not heard anybody even speak about 1 in the last few months!
    now i know why, lol

Thanks piopat/fintann for your opinions, that gives me a better understanding of the pros an cons of these boxes. I'm back to the old dilemma of budget v quality. Cheers

    I'd recommend a Dm600 ,its a great receiver.
Very stable ,an excellent server ,has pvr capabilities,a 7 day epg for Uk tv .
Its much superior to a Dm500.
You can get a clone for ~110 euro or an original for 170 euro.
Not all clones are rubbish btw, most are very reliable.

    guys,
I just downloaded the Darkstar 2 image and installed it to my dm500s.
Now my box doesnt work. It just flashes the Darkstar2 log every few seconds.

I suspect this is because my box is a clone, but i cant find a good answer on google.
Is there any way around this?
    Thanks
    John

    Thanks, thats the plan...
    But with what image?
Are there any darkstar's that dont have clone protection on them?
I know very little about the images... :)
