i suppose the box you buy depends on what you need from the box and what your budget is ,if your not bothered about hd and have a very modest budget of about £60 a dm500s will do fine .you can have hd on a budget with an openbox s9 or s10 they are both under £100 .with a bigger budget you could consider perhaps the blade bm7000 or the dm800hd pro ,both of those boxes would push the price up to around the £200 mark ,of course there are more higher end boxes such as the vu+duo (about £400) or the dm8000 (about £1000) .

you wont get any box that is the same as a skybox or sky+box so its a waste of time looking for one . you can attach a a hdd to some boxes which allow you to record (a hdd may not come with a box as standard and if so you will have to buy a hdd in addittion to the box)you can add an epg to dreamboxes depending on the image used ,as far as i know the blade comes with an epg or you can install it with the remote i dont know what type of epg you get with an openbox .

another thing to consider before buying a box is how well supported the box is ,that means does the box get regular updated software/images etc and also how easy it is to get help should you have a problem ,in that respect atleast for me the dreambox is the best supported .

you can buy original versions of all dreamboxes except the dm500s as they arent made any more ,the cost of originals are a lot higher where for example a dm800 clone costs about £200 an original will come in at about £400 .

what dreambox do you want ? .

clones work fine mate ,a dm500s is only sd (standard definition )so it wont open hd (hi definition)channels ,you would need a dm800hd .

Hello piopat /mojo seen a dreambox 500 HD for sale on a site called dvbsatbox retailing for around $260 + shipping you could probably get a 800HD cheaper closer to home as piopat says the dm500(sd) is a fine box especially if youre new to sat it really is a cheap and cheerful box.

    Regards/Jack......

What kind of hard drive is it?I have a 2.5" sata 160gb external hdd, couldn't get it to work i think its a power supply problem!when i connected it the dreambox wouldn't even recognise it ,the led light would keep flashing and do nothing else, ended up using an 8gb pen .

seems lots of issues with hard drives. i have a 1tb lacie esata hard drive that has worked for years now 24*7. The issue is never the hard drive. In my case the actual hard drive is an hitachi drive. Hard drives do not fail. The problem occurs with the interface card that is supplied with all external drives. By nature these deives are the old IDE drives that run for ever as hard drives in old computers. So then you have many companies who rebrand these units as their own by designing an interface board that will convert from IDE to USB or ESATA for the more modern folk. These circuit boards, I have found, cause massive problems. Lacie are one of the few who build proper interface circuits

Lankey is your maxator a passport hdd or does it have its own power supply? I may be wrong but what if a dreambox cant supply enough power to certain hdd's? and thats why its better to use a pen, or one that has its own power supply or better still mount one?
