I thought that problem went away when you deleted the text files... I don't know what is wrong. There is no way for me to fix this sort of problem without the actaul DVD, because this may be a trial and error type of thing. You can try just processing the DVD with VobBlanker and see if this does anything. Sometimes DVD Shrink is a bit picky though. You said that Recode had some type of problem with the subtitles, maybe this is what is killing DVD Shrink... Maybe strip the extra subtitles in VobBlanker. In total they will take about 20 MB though, so it will not affect compression too much. You can also try processing the DVD through CloneDVD2.
I've been trying to get this film (PAL version) converted so I can watch it on my iPod. It's driving me mad now. DVD decrypter wouldn't rip it (same prob as the other guy here), so I used DVDFab decrypter and now have a copy of everything from the disk on my hard drive. However, I have no idea which file I'm meant to convert...There seems to be no English version of the film, only Japanese, which is affected by using the menu? There's no separate audio files either. I only have loads of VOB, IFO and BUP files. I'm stumped now (though I'm very new to this whole copying thing) Any ideas?
I have never converted movies for an Ipod and such, but here is how you can get elementary streams which can be converted to avi, mp3s, etc... Launch DVD Decrypter and go into mode=>IFO The main movie will automatically be selected Right click on the PGC and go to "file splitting=>none" Next, you will uncheck all but the last cell of chapter 1 and uncheck chapter 29. Now, look for the "stream processing" tab. Select it and you will be in a screen with the streams listed. Now, place a check on "enable stream processing" Now, right click on any stream and select "set all - demux". Now, rip the DVD. What this will do is rip the movie as 1 large .M2V file (video), 2 large .AC3 files (the Japanese & English Audio) and some .SUB files (sub title files, but I do not know what format they are in). There will also be an IFO file and a text file, but those are not needed. Now, read the .AC3 files (the filename should tell you the language) or preview them. One of them is English and one is Japanese. You will only convert the one you want!! The .M2V file is the main movie. You can convert the .M2V (Mpeg 2 Video) into any video format using either an encoder or some video software. The AC3 will be your audio and you can convert that into any format as well. There are also standalone converters that can do the job, but like I said, I never converted a movie for iPod or any other mobile device.
I ripped it using "DVD Decrypter + PSL plugins + VobBlanker" and encoded with DVD-RB Pro + CCE SP 2.7 and burned with Nero Burning Rom. The result/picture quality is awesome. By the way, the movie is spectacular with tons of actions. Going to try my usual FREE method "DVDFAB Decrypter + VobBlanker" and will let ya'll know how it turns out.
just playing my backup of this movie now, i can fast-skip thru it, but there are no chapter points ah well, will just watch rest of movie to make sure it's at least complete
I tried what you suggested but there is no chapter 29, it only goes as high as 19. I tried it twice - once with 19 selected and once without and I still get the same read error straight away. Actually I've just noticed that the PGC it has selected is in VTS 33 which is the one you said was fake? I'll just try looking at VTS 1 instead
Jaguar, you're a genius. That's given me the right files I need. Now just to figure out how to convert them - the program I use normally only converts one file at a time so I need to figure out how to combine the 2 I guess (the audio and the main movie)
Well I'm finally burning the disc, except I had to use the whole thing rather than the cut down version I had created. I couldn't get it to work otherwise. The steps I did were: Use AnyDVD and and DVDDecrypter to burn the whole disc (apart from what AnyDVD takes out automatically of course) in file mode. Then used FixVTS. Copied VTS_01_0.VOB and VTS_01_0.IFO from the ones Jaguar sent me (this is the compressed title menu - no animation or sound) Used Get VTS Sectors in IFOEdit. Et voila, it works. Well, if you look it doesn't quite fit on a disc once you load it in Recode or Shrink. To make it fit, deselect Japanese audio in the main movie, and it should fit. I'll let ya know the quality when it's finished. I'm doing advanced analysis and slow burning in Recode. Thanks for everything you have done Jaguar.
@marv101, glad you finally got it to work!!! It would have been better if I had the R2 version because then I could have for sure posted a fix for it and you would have gotten 89.2% compression like I did... @alkohol, Good work on getting the R2 with the PSL. Lots of people are having trouble with this title from R2 even with the PSL plugin!! I know if anyone can get the normal free method working, it will be you!!! However, in VobBlanker, you may have to blank Chapter 29. It seems like that one has something corrupted in it!! @Razzie, What format do you need to make it compatible with iPod? You can create a new DVD with the files you have. All you need is IFOEdit (free). Launch IFOEdit. Look at the top menu and look for "DVD Author" or something similar to this (I do not have access to the program now so I cannot say for sure). This will drop the menu and select "author new DVD". Now, you select the .M2V as the video and the .AC3 as the audio. You can leave the rest alone. Now, click the button to proceed and it will create a new DVD for you!!! This will be movie only with no main menu. Now, you should have no problems opening this with your iPod software to convert it!!! If the iPod software can handle chapter points, let me know and I will tell you how to extract those with DVD Decrypter so you can mux those into the new DVD.
Well I managed to get it compressed around the 60-65% area, but the quality still seems great. Only problem I've found is the menu doesn't function properly. The game footage link doesn't work. Also, the credits don't come after the movie. Don't know why. They're on the disc, and you can access them by doing a direct skip or jump (or whatever it's called on your dvd player) to a title, where 2 and 3 are credits, and 4 is the game footage. Easy for me, I just hope my friend understands how to access it. Thanks for everything though Jaguar
To rip FF7 Advent Children simply open AnyDVD whatever version prefably later than 5.9.5.8. Insert DVD let AnyDVD unlock the disk. Right click the AnyDVD system tray icon and click on Rip DVD to Hard drive. Select your source (the DVD) and destination Eg FF7 folder on desktop. Check (tick) remove unreferenced and blank cells. Then click Copy DVD now wait... 45 mins roughly later you have a working version. Then use you compression tool of choice eg Clone DVD2 and presto DVD9 FF7 Advent children to DVD5 all bad sectors and other crap removed. Note* copying DVD's is illegal even if it is for your own use from you own copy. Just so all you other newbies know.
Note* to newbie's when downsizing from DVD9 to DVD5 remove all menu's etc and only copy main movie. Also if its a long movie 2hrs+ you can cut off the credits you wouldnt believe how much space it free's. Eg in King Kong after removing the credits I freed 100MB. Quality over quantity my friends! If you still want the extra's & menu's you can make another DVD with them on it either whole disk or just extra's. OR if your really that keen just BUY a DVD9 dual layer disk! OR BUY 2 COPIES OF THE MOVIE! One last thing my newbie brothers, dont start a new thread everytime you have a question! Just find a related thread read it first (you Q could have already been answered) THEN add to THAT thread not make a new one. That way everyone can find what they're looking for much quicker.
Correction, copying for your own personal use has not been determined in any court yet, not in the USA anyway, if you buy your own copy and make a backup for yourself there is no law in the land that will even waste thier time on you, doing it for profit or even giving it away in abundence they will.
@JaguarGod I'm from the US, so I'm with Region 1. Actually, I tried all 3 methods (FREE) and they all worked flawlessly, perhaps, it's because I post "process" the VIDEO_TS.IFO file through VobBlanker; here's what I did. <<< Method 1 >>> (A) - tried with PgcEdit via PSL plugins, PgcEdit warned me about some possible CSS encrypted in "VTS_01_*.VOB", but there aren't anything (critical) important in there, so the "wizard" didn't even have to create/generate any PSL files. (B) - process the "VIDEO_TS.IFO" file via VobBlanker and "blank out" some useless junks (i.e. all FBI Warnings, Sony Proctection Logo, rating screen/log), including: VTS_05_*.VOB VTS_06_*.VOB VTS_07_*.VOB VTS_08_*.VOB VTS_09_*.VOB VTS_10_*.VOB VTS_11_*.VOB VTS_12_*.VOB VTS_13_*.VOB VTS_14_*.VOB VTS_15_*.VOB VTS_16_*.VOB (C) - encoded with DVD-RB Pro + CCE SP 2.7 and finally burned with Nero Burning Rom <<< Method 2 >>> (A) - ripped with DVD Decrypter via Mode, File F (B) - process the "VIDEO_TS.IFO" through VobBlanker and "blank out" VTS_05_*.VOB VTS_06_*.VOB VTS_07_*.VOB VTS_08_*.VOB VTS_09_*.VOB VTS_10_*.VOB VTS_11_*.VOB VTS_12_*.VOB VTS_13_*.VOB VTS_14_*.VOB VTS_15_*.VOB VTS_16_*.VOB (C) - transcoded with Nero Recode 2 with "AA + HQSR" (D) - burned with Nero Burning Rom NOTE: Here is a log of mine taken from DVD Decrypter. <<< Method 3 >>> (A) - ripped with DVDFAB Decrypter 2.9.7.7 into hard drive Here is the log from DVDFAB Decrypter that I did it earlier: (B) - process the "VIDEO_TS.IFO" through VobBlanker and "blank out" VTS_05_*.VOB VTS_06_*.VOB VTS_07_*.VOB VTS_08_*.VOB VTS_09_*.VOB VTS_10_*.VOB VTS_11_*.VOB VTS_12_*.VOB VTS_13_*.VOB VTS_14_*.VOB VTS_15_*.VOB VTS_16_*.VOB (C) - transcoded with Nero Recode 2 "AA + HQSR" (D) - burned with Nero Burning Rom I haven't watched all 3 of my backups "completely" from started to finish simply because I've seen it 4 times already about 4 months way back when it was first released in Japan (I even have the original Japanese released version as AVI file converted into DVD). However, it all seems to work flawlesly at this point. I'll try to finish all of them backups and will let you/ya'll know how it turns out. I'm pretty sure it'll be fine -- I guess the "original" FINAL FANTASY VII: Advent Children I got is a lucky one afterall. Good luck to all and happy burning!
@alkohol, I have the Region 1 version as well and had no problems. I used DVD Decrypter & PGCEdit (for removing extras). I then loaded it into DVD Shrink to compress. I got it up to 89.2% with the main menu and subtitles and released a patch for the region 1 version that will do the same here: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/335561 I watched it last night and it looked great!!! They did a great job with the animation and had nice effects like the slowdowns and such. I was lost in the story though because I did not play the game and I did not look at the game footage extra. I got most of it by the end though. It was a good choice for you to post process this movie with VobBlanker. There was a lot of unecessary stuff in it.
I tried doing all the complicated stuff that you said for ripping this DVD, and I still couldn't get it to open in DVD Shrink... ...I got the latest versions of AnyDVD and CloneDVD2. Copied perfectly =]
