My wife's PC has been running pretty well. No real trace of the trojan/virus.

My pc, however, is crashing far too often and I believe, as you have suggested, that I need to reinstall my Windows XP. But before I do I needed some guidance.

I have two drives on my PC a 60 gig drive and a 500 gig drive, right now XP is installed on my 60 gig. Would you suggest I format the 60 gig drive and reinstall on the 500 or the 60?

After XP has been reinstalled, what programs would you suggest that I should install to keep my PC running optimally?

I will recommend the 60 gig hard drive, and leave that hard drive to be solely for installing Windows and other software. 60 gigs will be enough for that, while you can use the 500 gigs for data, movies, and such.

After backing up my various files on my 500 gig drive, I proceeded w/ the format of the 60 gig w/ a installation of windows XP using my valid copy of the XP home disk. The format seemingly went well, but this happened at the end or once over (I stepped away from my PC): I have encountered an issue where the computer is claiming that it cannot copy a file called tsoc.dll. I have few options: ENTER=retry (not working), ESC= skip file, F3=Quit.

What do you believe is going on?

Have you tried reformatting the hard disk?

Also, if it still does not work, you might want to try a free format software.

As you suggested, I reformatted and this issue did not arise; however, I have encountered another issue: My PC is getting locked up on a screen after the format and the windows XP install copying. What I got was a black screen and my mouse cursor. The cursor is movable, but nothing more loads, and the only way to restart is to hard boot it. So this happened again, leading me to the idea of reformatting it again. This time I was able to get XP loaded up and enter in the serial and begin to install my Intel motherboard driver, and the installation restarted my PC and led me back to the black screen w/ the arrow. I then reformatted again and this time I got a light blue screen w/ the mouse cursor before it got the installing XP.

Any advise? lol, this has been quite a frustrating ordeal, but I thank you for your help.

Right now, there are only two possible causes. A defective hard disk, or a defective windows installation cd. I suspect a problem with the hard disk more likely. Can you check it?

Update: The reinstallation of XP went through. I don’t understand why it was getting 'stuck' on those screens; however, I now have XP on the hard drive and I have followed the instructions given in http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/index.php...&page=How_did_I That was very helpful, thanks for the link.

Even with all this, my PC is still having little issues here and there. My pc has crashed a couple time for no apparent reason, some programs too. I am considering building a new PC starting with bare bone.

My wife has a window XP that I don’t even think is legit and it runs far more stable then mine. Although, I am having an issue w/ her IE address bar not appearing. I have looked online for what the cause may be and it appears that many have had a similar issue, but it was due to their taskbar being locked and/or the address bar not clicked to show or stretched to view; however, this doesn't apply to her situation.

It appears that after I reformatted and reinstalled I have been having networking issues, we can both access the internet, but we cannot view or transfer files to each others PC. I was hoping you had some advice on this as well as the missing IE address bar.

Few things I have to ask you: do the problems start immediately after you install windows, or does it happen after you install software?

Also, have you scanned your hard disk for errors?

The crashes began after installing programs on my pc. I was selective on what I installed though.

What software would you suggest to scan my HD with?

And do you have any suggestions regarding the 'disappearing' address bar in IE that I mentioned (this is on another PC)?

On the crashing computer, do these instructions:

• Start HijackThis.
• Click on Misc Tools.
• Then click Open Uninstall Manager.
• Click Save list...
• Notepad will open with the list.
• Post the list here.

On the computer without the address bar, download Advanced Windowscare Personal and install it. Update it, and then run a scan. Fix everything except Startup Manage. Restart, and see if your address bar came back.

If you could see me, you would have noticed question marks floating around my head. None of the programs installed could have been the cause, unless one of them is incompatible with other programs or your hardware.

As for the address bar problem, have you looked here yet?

I want you to know that appreciate all your time and help thus far.

My PC is still crashing as are the programs I am running on it, Oprah, World of Warcraft, Never Winternights, IE, etc. Whenever I get on line w/ my friends to game I am crashing multiple times within our limited gaming time. I am the cause of much delay and I really don’t have the money to purchase a brand new PC. Any other suggestions would be much appreciated?

Regarding my wife's PC, I updated her IE to 7.0 and this resolved the problem. Oddly enough, I noticed that her address bar is not visible when viewing files while browsing her folders. What do you think this may be?
