Any one have a ilo DVD Recorder With 80 GB Hard Drive, DVDRH04, from Wal-Mart,is it a good recorder?

LOL!! I see what's happening. You have "Hide file extensions for known files types" selected in your Windows settings. It is hiding the .VOB from you. You need to turn this setting off so you can see the the actually file extensions. When you renamed "Seifeld.VOB" (you only actually saw Seinfeld"), you added the .MPG to the filename instead of replacing the hidden .VOB part. This is why you ended up with Seinfeld.mpg.vob.

To turn this off, do the following:

1. Open Windows Explorer (shortcut: hold the Window logo key down and press "E" on the keyboard)
2. On the menu, select "Tools" and then "Folder Options"
3. Select the "View" tab
4. Find the setting "Hide file extensions for known files types" and remove the check mark.
5. Press OK

You will now see ALL file extension and will be able to properly rename the .VOB file.

WOW!! I am impressed after all! I just got a call from ILO from a woman with a very heavy Oriental accent that said ILO was going to fix the firmware to get the audio cd's to play again. The CD audio playback was recently broken by the latest firmware upgrade and they will be fixing it. Also...ILo will be fixing the firmware in a few weeks to allow the MP3s and JPEG files to be copied to the hard drive the way the owners manual states it should. She actually asked me if I was ok with waiting for a few weeks while ILO fixed the MP3 / JPEG file copying issues. We'll see what happens in the near future and keep everyone posted.

 

While you had her on the phone why didn't you ask why everyone is green on my tv?

I got an email, finally, from ILO tech support informing me that the firmware fix for the green tint affecting the hd04 will be out either this Friday (3-18) or Monday. The fix for the r04 is already out apparently.

 

This is good news Nick2 Let's just see if it happens.

 

yeah, I've had to discard way too many programs because everyone had green hair and bluish-green stubble on their faces.

 

Nice one Nick2, been waiting for this fix. I also emailed ILO awhile ago, they said they would take it to their R&D. Looks like enough of us complained and action is taken. I did notice that the tinting problem is only playing from the ILO, If I record to DVD, my Bose doesn't show a tinting problem. That makes me think it's a resolution problem within the ILO playback.

 

Gtrman, here is a problem for you. I used DVD Decrypter to rip Shindler's List and place it on my computer hard drive for convenient viewing. The movie comes with English, Spanish, and French languages, and guess what, they are all playing at the same time. When I play the DVD just English can be heard, but when I play the ripped version that's on my computer I hear all three at once. Any idea how I can get rid of the Spanish and French so I will know if this happens again?

What are you using to play the movie?? I've never heard of that before. If you are using something like PowerDVD, then it should work just like a normal player, allowing you to choose which audio stream to listen to.

If you are ripping to one single VOB file, all of the audio tracks are being ripped with it and leaving you no way to select which one to use.

Another way around it is to use DVD Shrink. Use the "No Compression" setting and un-select the audio streams you don't need. Be sure to set the proper settings to create the 1 VOB file instead of chopping it into 1gig pieces.

Has anyone used the DTVlink (1394) port to record digital channels from a tv? I have a tv with a built-in high definition (ATSC and QAM) tuner. It has a firewire port that can be connected to a DTVlink compliant device to record digital cable channels and high def programming.

 

Anyone know if the DVDRH04 can use dual-layer dvd blanks? I'm guessing not, but it would be cool if it did.

 

Guitarman or others, Any word on ilo hacks for the Pioneer 220-S? I'm a newbie, but I gather the Pioneer's tuner is stereo, it has chase play, maybe you can watch something else from what is being recorded, and it seems to generate fewer tech/image quality complaints online as compared to the ilo models.

If there are no hacks coming for the Pioneer, then I would probably buy an ilo. If I don't mind having always to record to DVD media, is there any other advantage to the hard drive ilo model over the cheaper one? I'm assuming the hum and noise issues talked about in this thread do not happen with all the units of the cheaper (non HD model).... Thanks.

 

To go a week without having major problems with my ILO DVDRH04 is like going a week without being kicked in the balls, a week without a bird dumping in my eye, a week without finding all four of my tires flat. Fortunately, I've been spared the last three. Now my damn, yesssssss DAMN, ILO refuses to open it's dvd tray, and no amount of turning it off and on or unplugging it will make it do otherwise. Damn you ILO, damn you Wal-Mart for sucking $278 plus tax out of my pocket like a cheap whore preying on a married man with a Frigidaire for a wife. Jesus F Christ, was this thing designed in Redmond, Washington?

 

Interesting thing. ILO just emailed me and asked for my postal mailing address so they could send me the firmware upgrade for the green tinting. Why are they not just distributing it on their website I wonder?

Oh, that's a relief. I thought that maybe they'd seen some of the things I'd written on here and they were sending some local Vietnamese gangbangers to my door to beat the hell out of me and give my cat a sage rub and stick a glazed apple in his mouth.

btw, I figured out if you unplug the machine, plug it back in and push the dvd eject button on the machine while it's turned off then it will come on and open the tray. On a girl, quirky is cute. On a piece of electronic equipment it usually precipitates violence and ends with a large, oversized screwdriver sticking out of something it shouldn't.

 

I wonder why they would be doing this ?

Could someone tell me why Dual Layer DVD+R blanks cost so damn much? They average around $25 for 3 disks. Anyone have a cheap source?

 

I expect that iLO will coincidentally post the firmware update on their site and provide email notification to those who have requested it. They've been pretty good responding to my queries but I don't think they'll go the mail route ($$$).
I think they covertly love the hack as it adds considerable value to their product.
