Does anyone know of a way that I can transfer a video I've burned on a DVD with my ILO to my computer hard drive? Is there a simple way? Does it require additional components? Is it even do-able?

    Nick2,

You can use either DVD Decrypter or DVD Shrink. It will create a copy of the DVD on your hard drive.

I think maybe I didn't say what I wanted to clearly. What I mean is, after I burn a video from the HDD to a DVD I put the disk in my computer (I don't have a DVD burner in my computer) and am left with two folders on the DVD. One is Video_TS and the other is Video_RM I think. My computer can't seem to find any video or audio in these folders. I'd like to be able to copy a video from the recorder's HDD and place it on my computer somehow so I could send it to a friend. I'm not looking to copy commercial DVDs at this time. Why can't this shit be simple?

Nick it is fairly simple. First though your computer is going to need to have at least a dvd rom to read dvd disks. Sounds like yours does not. With the price of dvd burners being not much more then dvd roms I say it is time to treat yourself to a burner.

    Gtrman,

I've also had the color tinting problem, i've noticed with the latest upgrade (with hack) that the problem has slightly gone away. In scenes that is very dark, it's still there but not as bad. In extreamly dark scenes, it does go back to black and white. I really think that the ILO has a resolution problem with low lighting, seems that the video quality gets worse the less light is in the scene.

You are nearly there then. Some dvd playing software should have came with the drive. Power dvd is what comes with most. To play the disk just play it same as playing dvd_video. With you wanting to send to your friend you will need to convert it. If you are going to send over internet especialy. Easy way would be to use nero and make nero digital. That way the friend can use nero player to watch it and can use nero make my own dvd to make dvd if wanted to.

There are also many other options for making it divx, xvid, svcd, or vcd. Good place to start looking into those is the software link at top of this site. But as I said nero will be the easy way to do it. If you or your friend dont got it they do offer 30 day trial.

    Nick2,

In the VIDEO_TS folder, you will have a few different files. The ones you are concerned with are the one with the .VOB extension. These are the video file for the DVD. The one called VIDEO_TS.VOB is the menu and can be ignored. Assuming you only have one recording on the DVD, there will one set of .VOB files. They will be named:
VTS_01_1.VOB, VTS_01_2.VOB, and so on. Each file will be no more than 1,040,384KB and the last one in the set will usually be smaller. The whole set of these .VOB files together will be your complete recording.

The .VOB file are nothing more than MPEG files. You can copy them to the computer and change the .VOB to .MPG and they will play in any program that supports playing mpeg files. The key is finding a way to turn the whole set of .VOB files into one .MPG file. There are a couple of ways to do this.

    1. Copy the .VOB files to a directory on the computer. Use a program like Wombles MPEG-VCR or MPEG Video Wizard to stitch the set of files together and export it back out as one.

    2. The easy way!!! Use DVD Decrypter in IFO mode. It will rip the main movie file off the DVD and store it on the computer as one complete file. Then, all you have to do is change the .VOB to .MPG on the one file. Presto!! You have a complete mpeg file of your recording that you can do what ever you want with.

I hope this helps you out. If you have any other questions, let me know.

Has anyone been able to use the copy feature to copy things other than recordings made by the ilo to the hard drive?

One more thing. This might be a little off topic, but I'm trying to make a menu for a few dvd's. Is there a way to map the number buttons on my dvd remote to a menu selection? I know it can be done commercially, but I'm not sure about doing it for home dvd's.

    philli,

You can usually copy other dvd_vr format discs to the HDD on the ILO but it will usually not allow other formats, even if you made them on the computer.

As far as remote menu buttons, this is usually a function of the player. Most any DVD with chapters can be accessed by pressing the number keys on the remote. When authoring the DVD, just put your chapter inserts wherever you want them and they should automatically be accessable via the remote.

    Gtrman,

I was using the 1191 firmware. I tried playing the disks in the HDRW720 and it would not even read the disks.

One more thing. After taking the .vob files and renaming the extentions with .mpg can I join them together using Windows Movie Maker? I already have that.

    Nick2,

You could but this would be very lengthy. Movie Maker doesn't export to mpeg so it will convert the file, which takes forever. You want a program that will export the multiple clips to one file without re-encoding it in the process. MPEG-VCR by Womble is great for just that. It is very straight forward, multi clips in, 1 clip out and in the same format and quality the seperate clips were.

Note that if any of the clips were recorded in a different setting, it will re-encode part of the output, but only the part(s) that are different.

If you are stitching a set of .VOB files, you won't have to worry about that because they are all the same program and therefore thae same settings.

If I'm not mistaken, MPEG-VCR will accept .VOB files without needing to change the extension.

Does anyone know if the simpletons at ILO have fixed the green tint problem yet? I'm getting damn tired of having to erase movies and shows I've recorded because every blonde looks like they have green hair.

I've used DVD Decrypter to rip my recorded shows into one big .vob file and I have another question. Even after renaming them with a .mpg extension, they will only play on my computer's DVD player software. Is there any way to get them to play with Windows Media Player? I know everyone says the WMP sucks, and maybe so, but it's the player I feel most comfortable with and is something most everyone has. Also, even after renaming them with the .mpg extension they are still classified as "type" vob files. Is there any way to get rid of the .vob classification in the DVD Decrypter settings? As an example, I might have an episode of Seinfeld, and after changing the extension it still reads as Seinfeld.mpg.VOB and a program such as Windows Movie Maker won't accept it with the .VOB on the end. It wouldn't matter a whole lot, except that I want to use Windows Movie Maker to make the file smaller. Most 2-hour movies I have downloaded are in the 700MB range, and this thing is 1Gig for just a half hour. Thanks.
