Any opinions on the Sharp DV-HR300?

Paitonii, did you check the label at the back side (containing the serial number) for the extension letter? My machine also shows no letter after the 350 at the front side, but on the serial number label, it says "350S"...

Something more about hi speed dubbing and timer records...

There is no problem with records longer than one hour if they're made by manual recording. Timer always record with "hi speed dubbing priority" option off. Whatever I set in options, timer don't care about settings. Looks like missed option in timer setup menu (somewhere beside quality, vps and drive).

 

Hi rcflyers, You got the Sharp 300H at a great price! With the money you've saved you could always buy earplugs! Only kidding.... BTW won't the fan switch off when you turn off the recorder ( maybe you are recording programs in the middle of the night!)Cheers Silver

 

RE High Speed Dubbing: All of the programs I dub are imported from an external source i.e. camera or video deck, so the timer issue I don't think applies. Program length aparently is not an issue as well as I've been able to high speed a 1 hr. 40 min program but not a 1hr. 10 min program. I'd just like to figure out what I'm doing incorrectly when importing source programs to the HDD. VMG

 

You should set "hi speed dubing preference" to YES in opitons menu. I made few records using scart as input (L2) and I always CAN dub it at hi speed when I started record manually. Record from the same line (L2), but started with timer have always hi speed dubing disabled, so *timer* is the case. Perhaps they thing that we always edit titles recorded by timer, so since editing works better with internal format (not compatible with DVD disk), hi speed dubing is disabled with timer. Kind of feature, like broken spidf output

Many thanks to everyone on this forum for all your advice so far. I have just bought the DV-HR300H (UK version) a few days ago. I (bravely/foolishly?) installed the MR patch before I'd done anything else so I don't know if that has any bearing on my problem, but here goes ...

Everything seems to work perfectly with HDD recording. I have recorded half a dozen TV programs which I have watched and erased, however, I recorded a film the other night and then 'deleted' out the adverts, etc. I have tried to copy it on to a DVD but I get the "RECORDING WAS STOPPED BECAUSE OF AN ERROR" message after about one minute of recording. I've tried it twice, and have two coasters to show for it. I am using TDK DVD-R 8x disks, which work perfectly on my PC. I have not tried copying anything else to DVD yet.

My question is this: Is my problem related to the disks I am using, do you think? If so, can anyone recommend a brand that is available in the UK that will work with this machine? If it is not the fault of the disks, what else can I try to resolve the problem? Any ideas?

rob0661, actually, only the title assigned by the unit will appear..normally it would be the date and time. You would need to erase that assigned title and store your own. It will not grab the actual title of the show, if thats what youre referring to.

darecki, I don't think you need to panic! The MR patch is I assume working and that you can now watch all region DVDs?
I know TDK are top class media but I think the answer is to try another make of disc. I have used all sorts of media 4x and 8x and frankly several have been at the cheaper end of the market. Touch wood I have never had a coaster ( yet). Ritek dye discs are amongst the best and if you log on to www.svp.co.uk you will find them at under 20p per disc. You may as well use 4x as the higher speed discs ( usually more expensive) aren't worth the extra to use on the Sharp

Hi Silver! ....awesome, it's still my sweet lil gem .
Hope you're doing good old friend. Been burning quite a few disc's lately. Never realized how many of those aweful hi8 and vhs tapes I had accumalated. At least we now have a much better way of preserving those one in a lifetime memories.

Hi Manny Good to hear from you. Strangely enough tonight my buddy is bringing round 2 mini dv tapes of his vacation cruising from Seattle to Alaska that he wants me to transfer on to DVD. With firewire connection it's an easy operation on the Sharp and a flawless copy afterwards. So much better than the old transfer to VHS eh?

Troubles after upgrading HDD

WIth my new 250GB HDD recording works fine, but unit behave a little bit weird:

1. I always have "important mesage" with garbage inside. Erasing didn't help me - during erasing unit hangs partially (delete menu freeze, I can return from menu, but I cant get in again before turning power off/on). After power reset I have more "important messages".

2. Titles recorded by timer always have garbled names, clearing timer setup didn't help me.

I tried reset button (behind left door), it will reset device to (almost - except time and tuner setup) default, but didn't help for problems above also.

I'm wondering about downgrade to 160GB Segate, as someone wrote here that it works better, but I'm not sure it's really. Any advice?

Definately just the 300 on label. Plays all regions though.

Is there anyway to defeat the protection so than all DVDs can be copied onto the hard drive? Something like DVD Region Free for the PC.

Thanks for the advice and the tips. I got some no-name 2x DVD-Rs from SVP that they were selling off cheap (12p each) and they work a treat - no problems! And yes, the MR patch works perfectly although I haven't tried a RCE R1 disk yet. Thanks again for everyone's help.

Paitonii. There is no way the Sharp can record finalized DVD's on to the hard drive...HOWEVER... if you have e.g. an external DVD player (I have a Samsung burner/player in an external caddy) and connect this via the firewire sockets at the front of the 300 it'll then be no problem.

Hi rcflyers. You must appreciate the Sharp is a bit like a PC. The fan is there to disperse the heat generated by the HDD etc. I'm sure you'll get used to the noise eventually. Lucky you don't live in a country where the crickets are noisy from dawn to dusk! All the best (sleep well) Silver64

I have been messing around a bit to try and quieten my unit by using bits of various materials.
sponge foam was useless, the best result i have had so far is to curve a piece of card around the top and bottom casing over the fan area. see here for pics

the fan air still escapes ok at the sides, but it makes it a lot quieter when sitting/lying in front of the unit.
