I am not a newbie. I know to wait for the disc's to be recognized before hitting record. I have been a television operator for the past 8 years, plus I have been a tech junkie since most of the people on this board were in diapers. Nothing said on this board can fix the problems with the Emerson DVD recorders, they suck. Use your computer to and a DVDR, or buy good stand alone recorders like pioneer (they invented laser disc technology for heavens sake) Long Live Laser Disc!!!

    HEY bkrawitz---
I bet I wasn't in diapers when you started--maybe college...I remember when I saw RCA blank VHS video tapes for only $17.95 at K-Mart--I bought all I could---they sold for $19.95 each usually and I thought they would NEVER be cheaper. Wal-Mart had RCA's for 10 for $5--50 cents apiece last week. I have old VHS tapes that are much heavier than today. Thicker tape I think. Someone at Emerson must have ticked you off--I would NEVER call anyone for advice on their products--WHY?--because I won't get any! :)

Well I was just trying to help.

Like I said, I do not have any problems with my unit and it works great. I have an emerson tv that I've had for 12 years. I've only had one problem with it and it was my fault. Now I have this product and it works great too.

Sorry for all the trouble you've had, however, many people have this recorder and love it. Its rated as a good buy for functional DVD Recorders at Digitalfaq.com as well.

Maybe the upgrade bombed your unit and thats why we have difference of opinion. I didn't upgrade because I am skeptical about that stuff.
I just bought a ton of 1x and 1x-4x discs to avoid the upgrade for now.

I didn't mean to get on your nerves. Only wanted to help.

I put it in my burner to upgrade and still it only loads the disc for a few sec and it ejects itself and tells me to insert a disc. I used CD-R and tried with DVD-RW. :(
How are you guys finalizing using NERO? I'm doing everything else right I think.

I burn the cue/iso image to a DVD-RW by going to nero, select recorder->burn image, and select the cue and iso files.
I don't see anything that would finalize my disk in NERO. I figured once it was burned it was already finalized in the burn process.

    Hi,
I really like this recorder, but looks like alot of you on here don't. For the price it can't be beat and I just burn from dvd to dvd and TV shows, so I don't need an expensive recorder.
My problem I was having with my firmware upgrade was the 4x TDK DVD-R, not the recorder. The way the label reads on the spindle is that these TDK Discs are 4x only, so they only burn at 4x, they are not 1-4x compatible. I am using Fuji 8x right now with no problem.

    Hey Budman,

I agree with you. This machine works just fine with me.

I don't know what all the fuss is about.

I think half of the gripes with this machine is user error anyway.

"I dont really like Emerson or Walmart If you want a cheap DVD recorder there is one I think called Cyber home but I still love my Magnavox MRV640 and the price keeps dropping over at best buy Its now down to 142$ I might even get another one There is a DVD VCR Combo but it is a bit more expensive Personally I think if you already have a VCR the combo is not helpful VCRs are going to be phased out soon Like tape players people will still use them but wont build systems around them My advice is to shop around Use sites like Next Tag Compare prices on Ebay Check stores like BestBuy If you do a little research you will be surprised what you can get I still think I got the most bang for my buck with the Magnavox Until there is a bigger price drop in the other high end brands like Sony Toshiba etc Im sticking with Magnavox :)"

I've had this Emerson recorder for almost 2 years now and only had a problem twice...bad disc's. I had some of your so-called "high end" brands though, paid $350 for the Sony DRU-500ax when it was first released, lasted me a mere 2 months then died. Also had a Toshiba VCR I bought back in 2000,played commercial tapes ok but anything I recorded with this thing would not play back properly on any other deck I tried(really fuzzy and sound/video would be way out of sync). I admit though, I would never have purchased and Emerson product,or any exspensive electronic item for that matter from wal-mart except the price was right, and I have no regrets. It all depends on what kind of mood QC was in that day of production I guess.

I have now tried buring an 8X disc and I dont have the 30 second delay everyone is talking about. I was able to burn an 8X disc perfectly without the delay.. hmm.. great unit for what I paid ($118) ... It may not be a high end unit but it seems to work perfectly for me....

    Gee..

You guys must be calling on off days.

I have the disk. They sent it to me as soon as I asked for it, but I have not tried to load it because everyone on here has complained about the 30 second delay.

Each time I call the regular 800 number (not the one on the upgrade disk) they can not wait to ask me if I wann load that thing.

I may give it a try now that you guys have successfully loaded it in.

    Hello Migraine_

Yes, I talked to the techie, and while he was on the phone I punched in "CM SKIP + 123" on my remote as he said to, but no numbers came up on my t.v. He had me try several times, and his opinion was that something is wrong with my 6 month old Emerson, and that I should take it 40 miles to an authorized repair shop and leave it with them and pay them to fix the problem, etc. . .

My Emerson generally works good using 4x dvds to copy VHS tapes to DVDs, which is what I want to do, though some of them created coasters for me. Also, it works OK to record t.v. shows on VHS tapes and DVD-Rs and DVD-RWs.

I was hoping to hear from someone else with an Emerson EWR20V4 who has successfully upgraded their unit. Thanks for asking.

Not sure what u mean buy 30sec delay?

I got the disk ...But it came with no codes the users here poste d the codes I found I had to put the disk in after the codes where put in ...when I put the disk in fors it froze power would not even shut off had to unplug it..

Took just under 3 min to burn the firmware ......It then let me load a 8x disk, and I just recorded "Face/Off" in 4 hour mode typed up tittl e an d finalized the Disk it started from the SEC..I hit REC....so It worked fine for me

    No Thanks to Emerson!

I have not used my Emerson EWR10D4 yet. How important is it to get the disc with the upgrade for 8x recording? Is there a big difference moving up to 8x speed as opposed to just staying with the 4x that it is now? I also would like to know how much of a picture degradation using the slower speeds of recording causes.

There is no problem with not upgrading, which is why I have not done it yet. The problem is that it is getting harder to find 4x disc's in stores.

This unit, while it records great and is priced right, was manufactured a while back so it is kinda dated.

Soon, you will not be able to get 4x discs. (notice how when you go into the store its loaded with 8x-16x discs)

In order to continue using this machine you will eventually have to upgrade to the 8x disc. You can call emerson and they will send you an upgrade disc.

Besides that this machine is great!

Also, I believe even while using the 8x discs that your recorder will continue to burn at a maximum of x2.
