Darn, this is confusing. I thought I was responding to McAlister's forum message posted 26 Sep 2004 and after I had sent it, found out I had sent a "private message" which was not my intent. So, hopefully, I can get this message posted in the correct place:

I decided to go back to the original thread and read from start to finish instead of the other way round and came across your message written last fall. Recently I played a copyrighted DVD inputed to the front of my TV with all that Time Warner/Scientific America Box crap connected to my GO VIDEO dual tape player/recorder and recorded the DVD onto VHS in slot #1. I read where you mentioned something about a stabilizer. What exactly is that and how would one work on a dual GO VIDEO? Because obviously my newly copied VHS tape looked like a "copied tape." When I took the "copied tape" into the other room to try and make a back up copy on my VHS/DVD Panasonic recorder and pressed the DUB button, I immediately got a response from the DVD that the VHS tape was a copyrighted tape. Is there a way around this. I seem to have a knack for buying equipment that doesn't match or I don't know how to use and the same situation about software for my computer. My goal still is to be able to make back-up copies of my DVD's as I use the copy at work in my home/office. I would also like to get rid of the Scientific American Box... it has a code but I'm not sure that my Panasonic will work as a tuner.

Here is an update to my previous post about buying DVD-R 4x on eBay.

I recently purchased a 100 spindle of "no-name" blank DVD-R 4x on eBay, it cost me $0.11 plus $19.50 shipping = $19.61 total. They were shipped within 48 hours of purchase, packed well, arrived in a week by USPS media mail, and I am pleased to report that they work fine in the Emerson machine. They are definitely "blank" - no label at all - and you have to look close to figure which side is which. The code etched into the center says DVD-4R and a string of numbers.

If you would like to explore this option, I can recommend the seller "primedias" who is in California. They have branded DVD as well as no-name. To see what they have listed, go to

    http://stores.ebay.com/Primedias

    A couple of notes:

    1. Some forum participants have noted there may be quality and other issues on no-name media. Check previous posts for their comments.

    2. The rather strange price of $0.11 plus $19.50 shipping is the result of eBay's seller commission policy - which is based only on the selling price, not the shipping. This is an incentive for sellers to inflate the shipping cost and deflate the sale cost.

Thanks for all forum participants for continually adding to our body of knowledge about these machines. I have been extremely pleased with mine and it gets a LOT of use making DVDs, generally every day.

I have a question about the different ways to hook up a DVD Recorder.
I have never used anything except the regular RCA cables. Can any
of the three types of cables be used, or are the Component and S-video
for something else other than regular operation.
If either can be used. What is the difference? The standard RCA,
and the Component cables look the same except for the color.
Can they be interchanged? Which is best?

    Thanks

Has anyone tried the SIMA CT1 or CT2 with this recorder yet?

If so, how did it work?

I have tried everything that you people have said to do and I am still not able to make this upgrade work. How the hell do you write the .ISO .cue and the .txt files to the same disk using imaging? I can only write one at a time. Also how do you get the upgrade screen off once you have it going? This is just in case I would like to watch a movie while I wait for the disk that I will most likely order today.

    Thanks

    Hi,
Has anybody that has this recorder had the following problem.
I did the 8x upgrade in May and a couple weeks ago my recorder started messing up. You press record and it will count up to 59 seconds and start at 0 again and then count back to 59 and over and over until it comes up Can not record to disc. If you hit stop it tries to write to disc, but comes up an error. I don't hear the scratchy sound you hear when you are recording,"when it is writing to disc", so it may not be writing to disc. If I can get it to burn, it will play in the recorder, but if you put it in a regular dvd player the title menu comes on, but when you hit play it says can't play disc or in my sony it just goes back to the sony screen. One wierd thing is that I can get it 8 out of 10 times to record on my Fuji 8x dvd-r's made in Japan, but I just bought the same dvd-r Fuji, but they are made in Taiwan and they won't work. My Maxell 4x will not work or my Beall 4x or my Memorex 8x and they all worked before.
    Any idea of the problem?
I sent an e-mail to Funai about the recorder and they must not have looked at my e-mail very well because they wrote back and said I need the firmware upgrade for 8x dvd's, so that was no help and when you call the 800#, the person you always get on the line is really hard to understand.

    Thanks,

    Budman...

Did you get the upgrade disc from funai or did you burn one from the net?

If it was from the net it could be bad or incorrect upgrade data. It sounds more to me like a power surge may have messed up you unit.

The only thing that the upgrade disc does is put code into your drive that allows x8 discs. The upgade would not wipe out x4 data.

Hmmm...this is why I have not installed that upgrade disc yet. I just continue to buy as much x4 discs that I can.

Sorry that you are having this issue.

Regarding the 8x solution disc--is it really necessary? If the only difference is some speed, is it worth it to load it? Some of you know computers far better than me, I fear rocking the boat on this. I have a solid fear of computer problems for no obvious reason--mainly because they are light enough to throw out the window :)

    Well...

Eventually it is going to become very hard to find x4 discs. Stores are just blowing them out like the plague, so yes getting the upgrade disc in for future use would probably be smart.

However, while the x4 discs are ridiculously low in price and we are talking about low priced good media, the best bet is to buy as much x4 as you can now and avoid the upgrading of your unit.

By all means order your upgrade disc just do not install yet.

By the way, I just copped a cake box of 50 x4 Spin-X DVD's at OfficeMax for 12 bucks. These are top of the line Moser Baer DVD's with the MBI 01RG20 code (Verbatim/MBI Code).

I just tried one out and it works great in the Emerson!

These discs are blow-out clearance jobs. Find them on the OfficeMax Website. The supplies are limited, but for 24 cents a piece get them while you can!

    Hi GregRod,
I got the upgrade disc from Funai. I called and they said to reinstall it and it is still having the same problem. I haven't called them back yet, they will say take it to a service center I am sure. I have it hooked up to a surge protector, but not sure how good they work. There was a low power surge a few weeks ago , not sure if that is the problem or not. Thanks for replying.
By the way I do have the CT-2, works great. I think the only diffrence in the ct-1 and ct-2 is that the ct-2 has a S-Video in and out, but not 100% because I have not tried the CT-1.
If you can think of anything let me know.

    Thanks,

No motorcyc......Component & RCA cables can not be inter changed..They are not the same.

and on the EWR10D4 Component video is for output only.

I use the s-Video for input, My Cable box has S-Video out, this hooks to the EWR10D4's S-Video input.

Be sure to tell yor DVD REC witch imputs to use.

If using Component Video for output I will sugjest the monster Brand as they are of better quality than the cheaper brands.

Was in WalMart yesterday. The Emerson EWR20V4 recorders now say on the box that they record on DVD-R up to 8x, so looks like the ones now in production have the new firmware.

Also the EWR10D4 machines were on the CLEARANCE rack.

Thanks for all the info (and the humorous responses) but I still have a problem with my recorder.

I recorded a couple of shows on one DVD-rw in VR mode. edited out all of the comercials and set chapter points. That was the easy part :)

now I want to rip the shows to create season discs of each show, but my programs don't read the VR discs. I did find ULead's DVD Movie Factory will read the VR mode, but it won't rip copy protected discs.

DeCSS and DVD Decryptor don't recognize the VR format. Does anyone know of a program that will? or am I up the fecal matter estuary without a rowing device?

    b_kanobe,

The recorded material made on the Emerson may not (most likely) be able to be read on a computer burner. Especially a VR burned RW.

So yes, start forget the paddles and start swimming....LOL!
