That's what I was thinking, except I bought & opened a 30 pack of 8x's, otherwise I'd take them back, and just get some of the bundles of 4x's...

Is there a way I can hook the emerson to another recorder? The way I have it hooked up I thought I almost had it the right way to use the vcr part of the emerson dvd recorder with another one. With the other recorder the main menu comes up on it but it will record blank even when the tape is playing. I even selected the vcr button on the emerson remote and know I"m not using the dvd part. I have the emerson vcr on either line 1 or 2. Thanks for any help.

I also bought and opened 2 different 50-spindles of 8x before I realized they would not work. I posted them for sale on eBay and explained what happened in the description, and sold them for within a couple dollars of what I paid for them.

Just following up to let everyone know I DID the upgrade to 8x last week, and there are NO problems on my end, it starts recording immediately, the quality is the same, so now my 8x's don't have to go to waste! :)

I used a file I got in a link from earlier on in this thread, I went to the site & downloaded it, burned it to a CD-RW.
Then I hit CM skip 654 really fast and it says to insert upgrade disc,I put in the disc, and then after 3 minutes it was done!

Why didn't you get the firmware from Funai?

I really hope that your unit does not develop problems with that downloaded firmware.

As I said earlier, there are two different firmwares for these units. You put the wrong one in and bye bye unit.

I do not understand why people just don't order the dang firmware from Funai.

    Oh well.

I have no complaint with the Emerson EWR10D4. It was a problem continuing to find the right discs but once I upgraded it isn't a problem anymore.

    What disk did you use?

The discs I am currently using are the CompUSA 4x DVD-R. I think the manufacturer is FMI (whoever that is). They have worked great. I have also tried the Maxell 8x since the firmware upgrade and they worked fine.

I have run the gammut of DVD recorders and players. Cyberhome was the worst. Now I have a Panasonic DMR-ES10. Price is about $200 depending where you buy it. It will burn and read both + or - r's and writes to to -RW only. I have used blanks marked for Data or Video use and no problems. It is easy to set the timer. Stay away from the crap at Walmart as that is where I got my Cyberhome. It will not work properly with the newer higher speed blanks. For some reason I can set only one timer. Sometimes it records and it did as the blank shows it but recorder does not read it. It runs so hot I had to put a fan in it and got about a year out of it. I also have a Phillips and it still works. Uses + media only. What I like about it is you do not have to finalize RW disks. I use for recording shows I don't want to keep and play them in another player. Some recorders take forever to finalize. I am planning to replace my cyberhome with a sony to see how they do. Trying to keep confusion down on remotes. I could write a book about these things but if you want something that works spend about $200 and make sure it will read and write at least + and - r's. Haven't found one that does both + and - RW except ones for computers.

well, Gregrod after much research about it, I had the link to the correct file that everyone else said worked, so why not do it instead of waiting for Emerson to send it to me, I had some copying I needed to start right away.
Believe me I researched it before I did any upgrading because I did not want to take any chances.
I have since recorded 16 discs on 8x after the upgrade with absolutely no problems.

Absolutely no problems after updating. The tray would not close initially but that was anticipated and I was instructed to turn the power off. That remedied that. It was a very easy thing to do. I'm not sure what the problems have been but I have experienced none.

can you rec copy protected movies, some one said they can after the update

I too was a little conflicted about upgrading. I had found enough discs to keep me recording for awhile and I thought about just leaving well enough alone. But I certainly am happy with the recorder itself and with the upgrade I would have more options later. The fact is the 4x will probably be very difficult to find eventually.

I have only detected the slightest of delay with the recording start. I just make an allowance for it.

Like I said, I am very pleased with the upgrade.

The only way I would not have upgraded would be if I had plenty of 4x discs to last me until it was time to buy another recorder.

I haven't tried that. I will tonight and let you know.

That would be quite a benefit.
