    Tanooki..

    Do you read?

Like I said, read the posts associated with this thread. There are many people who have used "a download" from the net and there units have developed problems.

Also, call me whatever you want, but if tech support says there are two different upgrades for the ewr10d4 that means 1 does not work for all.

I do not work for Funai, but I am smart enough to know that your download is a dis service to ewr10d4 users "if you are telling them that your rip works on all units".

If you don't believe me then use your brain and call Funai and ask them yourself.

Worthless billion dollar company? You didn't mind giving them some money..LOL!

Ok...I called back for you. There are two versions of the upgrade. Version 1 and Version 1.5. If your version is 1 and you upgrade with version 1.5 or vice versa you can cause damage to your unit.

Call 1-800-605-8453 and ask them yourself.

Ps. by the way, I will not report you for abusive language. Now if I did that would be the real beeoch move!

    No need to report him.

    Its all good.

Yes its time to move on..

So tell me, what 8x media have you guys tried in your units since doing the upgrade? Have you come across anything that does not work well?

So far I have tried the Maxells (8x) and they work great. They load faster too.

I just got the Memorexs I ordered from CompUSA. What should I do with them? Send them back? They are made in Taiwan... does that mean anything?

Memorex made in Taiwan means CMC Magnetics made them for Memorex. Memorex does not make their DVD's they outsource them.

It is my understanding that the Memorex 16x media is decent but the Memorex 4x and 8x are garbage.

I'd send them back and stick with the Memorex "Made in Japan" media.

If you have Comp USA near you, I think you can simply take them to the nearest store and get your money back.

I will probably just send them back.

On the DVD vs. tape thing... I am now re-recording the most important stuff to tape. I do still have some master tapes I didn't throw out. I thought (assumed) that recording to DVD was going to indefinetly preserve my stuff. Also it would save so much room. I should have done my homework. I wonder how many other saps out there assumed the same and have put precious memories onto junk media that will not last the year?

I haven't done the upgrade yet but I was wondering if the firmware process is the same way for everyone. I have the upgrade from the company. I know it says how somewhere in this thread but just in case the company tells me I waited to long to upgrade and they won't tell me how if someone can please tell how here. Thanks.

Hey guys I called the company and got my disk it has software update for 8x version: NRS*****R1.0 and they walked me threw the steps and after it was done turn unit off for 3 mins. when I hit the record button it misses the about 5 sec. I called there 1-800 number and the lady told me that yes it will be off and she said I would seguest to hit the record earlier before hitting play on the other unit if I was dubbing. lol I didnt even mention anything about dubbing.

Personally I haven't found the delay a big deal. I don't believe mine is quite five seconds either. I just make an allowance for it.

I edited a movie last night after recording using the vr mode on a rw disc and it was great. That's a feature I had not tried yet. It is wonderful to be able to edit out all the commercials. I thought the video quality was excellent as well. I will close the rw disc and then record it to -r disc (I can then reuse the rw one). I'm glad that feature is so easy to use.

I'll probably do the upgrade by the end of the week when I don't record as much. I always record a minute before a show starts anyway in case it starts early and end it a minute ahead. I'm going to do the upgrade according to what was said here
    . Power on your Recorder.

    5. On your remote control; Press the "CM SKIP" button at the bottom of the remote followed by the numbers: 6, 5, 4. (Do this as rapidly as possible)

    6. A screen will appear telling you to insert the upgrade disk. (Thats the disk you just burned)

    7. Put the disk in, close the tray and the Recorder will begin to start the upgrade. The display on the front will start counting down and the upgrade will take about 3 minutes. *** DON'T TOUCH ANYTHING UNTIL IT FINISHES UPGRADING THE FIRMWARE ***

    8. When the counter on the front of the Recorder reaches 0, the screen with tell you that it has finished upgrading the firmware and THEN THE RECORDER WILL AUTOMATICALLY EJECT THE DISK.

    9. Take out the disk and then turn off the power for about 20 seconds.

    10. Power on the Recorder and if you followed the instructions above, then you SHOULD be able to burn 8x DVD-R's. (NOTE: This upgrade WON'T change anything on DVD-RW's. You still CAN'T use DVD-RW Ver 1.2 /2-4x CPRM compatible or Above.)

I've got the Emerson DVD recorder on layaway at walmart. I got it just for dubbing family tapes of my kids to DVD media thinking this would be a permanent way to preserve them...but after reading this forum I'm not so sure...

Are there any dvd recorders and media that will permanently preserve valuable tapes of your family or are you better off dubbing them back to tape...any advice appreciated.

    JandJsdad,

This is an excellent DVD Recorder to use to dub VHS to DVD.

The only problem with it is that right out of the box, it only will use 4x DVD-R media.

I've had one for 6 months. Its worked like a charm.

If you have reservations because of the upgrade issue, you could always wait until the EWR10d5 comes out. This model will accept 8x DVD-R and 4x DVD-RW. I beleive it will retail around 200 bucks.

    Nevertheless, the Emerson is great.

I pulled out one of the oldest recorded DVDs (with the Emerson) that I have (about a year old) and plugged it into my Sony player. Plays fine until about 1/4 through when there are problems (freezes, skips). I put it in the Emerson and it plays great. Whats up?

    Jesse,

I too have had compatibility problems with other units. My experience is that the Emerson is not always compatibile, especially if you use compression.
