Personally I have found that Verbattims, Maxells and TDKs work great in either the x4 or x8 speed. They are the best in terms of availability. You should call Emerson and get the update disc for the machine sent to you so that you can move up to x8 if it doesn't read them now.

    High Again:

I have some questions or thoughts, you guys might help.
Numero uno ?: Wolf123 when you speak of cleaning the recorder, do you mean by a DVD disc cleaner or taking the case off and cleaning the interior? I have a Philips disc cleaner and by inserting the disc about every 50 hours of operation it seems to recognize the blank discs better. When cleaing the interior do you have to be careful not to disturb any components and what do you use to clean it?
Numero dos ?: Also, if some of your VHS tapes are old, can you hook up another VCR and played it into the Line 2 the front inputs and record from the VCR side of your DVD recorder, to try to make a better looking newer VHS tape to then record on to a DVD blank disc. Simply put can a VCR record to the VCR side of the Emerson?
Still trying to put all my old VHS onto DVD's slowly but surely, Thanks for this forum, it's interesting

I am new at this forum, but wanted to let you know I have a new Sylvania DVD-90VF recorder from Sears (was on sale for $149.99) that I am testing out, it seems to be pretty stable, straightforward, & sturdy, and can record to 8X DVD-R/RW media, Just wish it had 3hr rec. mode in SP quality to compete with the (flexible recording, on the Panasonic, or the upgraded Lite On recorders), then I'd have the best of all worlds!,,, Hey Funai are you listening??? Thanks for lookin, Mike

By the way, Sylvania/Emerson/Symphonic/Funai, all made by Funai

    For DannyMcC
I do what you're describing quite a lot with this emersonEWR20V5>the dvd recorder seems great but the VCR part of it sucks. It has no sensor,on the 'rewind' function, so far it has ripped the tape off 4 diff video tapes when I tried rewinding>motor goes full speed until it gets to the end. Bought a brand new JVC hi-fi vcr for about 75bucks, it slows the rewind/ff speeds down as it nears the tape's beginning or end.
But as for your question>just get a decent vcr, hook audio/video OUT
to the inputs on the Emerson, put that sucker on recordDVD and set up your vcr tape, hit play button on vcr, then record on the dvd. Does a good job ifyou have a half-way decent videotape..I cant really tell any difference recording that way, than using the vcr-play part of the emerson to dub to dvd.Plus you can control the editing of commercials that way if you watch close, and use reg dvd-r instead of those expensive -RW disks.
Dont worry about trying to make a 'newer' vhs tape from an old one-unless you just want a copy of that! Record straight to the dvd.
    hope that helps

Can anyone explain how to enable copying DVD movies that have the copyright protection? I know I have seen it on here somewhere, but can't find it again!
    Thanks!

Help! I just purchased an Emerson EWR20V5. I hooked it up as the manual said. When the recorder is on TV, the picture from satalitte dish is very sharp and in color. When I switch it over to DVD it flashes then comes back on in black and white. When I try to record a program the recording is in black and white regardless of VHS or DVD but the picture rolls and you can not see it. The sound was clear. Any ideas?

jungleman, what kind of sat system are u using? Ive got mine hooked up to 2 diff ones and no problem like that. Video/audio out from sat box-to
video/audio IN on the emerson, it should be working...I did read in the manual that the S-video only works on DVD playback, so if you are trying to use that cable it might be your trouble. If your sat dont have jacks, but only the RF OUT (tv cable type output) then you have to connect to the emerson using that.

My sat system is DSTV. From sat box to the emerson I have both video and audio (out on sat/in on emerson). I just noted that when I switch from VHS to DVD the picture tends to "zoom" in as well as go black and white. When I play "store bought" DVDs - the picture is crystal clear and in color. My other problem is that I can not get my "top menu" button to work on the remote to see if there is something in the set-up or options.

If you're using the jacks on the far right of the emerson, and not the 'component' jacks I don't have a clue. Some kind of mismatch going on.
Try the jacks on the front of the emerson just for grins. Or, if your sat recr has RF or TV OUT cable connect it that way to see if THAT works. Thats a puzzler.
Also you'll find the remote is mule-headed for the Emerson , to keep you from accidentaly stopping or starting something. You almost have to hit the DVD or VCR button on the remote every time you want to pause or record on either device. Well, if you dont switch between vcr/dvd a lot you wont have to. Takes some getting used to.

Sounds like you have a copyguard problem on that Satelite broadcast, usually the tuner, will show the program just fine, but once you make Any attempt to copy it, Watch Out, distortion!

    Hey jungleman,

I would be interested to know what kind of satellite system reciever you have and when you bought it. Also, what are you recording? Movies from a movie channel, PPV or TV shows? I haven't heard that they are copyguarding TV yet but if they are...

This once-primo unit is now starting to really annoy me! All of a sudden, every time I insert a DVD-RW (new or used, it doesn't matter!) I get the "can not record on this disc" message. They even throw in an "E4" - whatever that is (of course there is no code for this specific nag in the owner's manual). This pretty much puts a crimp in my DVD-RW recording - VCR side works fine but you should use a new/nearly new tape. I'm using Maxell discs, which previously worked fine in this unit. Anyone else having this unique problem and do you have any advice for me/us? I sent Emerson an e-mail but have received no response as of yet. When (if!) they do, I'll post it here for all to see. Thanks in advance!!

Did you try (rebooting), unplugging it for awhile, or overnight?

No; does that work for all ills? I'll try it - I'm so frustrated now I'll try anything!

    Anilyb,

What is the speed rated on those Maxell discs? Did you do the upgrade or was your model able to record on 8x discs? If not make sure they are Maxell 4x's. Also make sure they are -R's and not +R discs.

    +R's will not work.

Also, purchase a DVD lens cleaner kit. I think they run about 8-12 bucks at Walmart.

This may sound like I am calling you out but I am not...

Make sure you are not trying to record on a disc that has already been finalized.

It could just be you have a bad batch of discs too!

    GragRod,

These are Maxell 4x -RW. The frustrating thing is that this machine was doing OK up until a few days ago on both previously recorded and new discs - I even "undid" the finalization but this did not help. My Maxell -R discs work great.

I did not upgrade this machine as I have not heard from Emerson and I am not holding my breath!

From now on I am keeping my Wal-Mart disc receipts!!

    Anilyb,

    BINGO!

If you did not do the upgrade to 8x and you are still using Maxell 4x DVD-R then that means you can not use Maxell 4x DVD-RW in your machine.

You can only use Maxell 2x DVD-RW. (TDK, Fuji DVD-RW x2 should work as well)

I beleive even after the upgrade that DVD-RW x2 will work. DVD-RW x4 only work in the newer models that were upgraded at the factory.

    GregRod,

Many thanks!! I will try your advice. My only question is that why did it work for a couple of months and now not at all? I would have figured it would have not worked at all or should have worked all the time. Any advice/guesses would be appreciated!
