I refuse to see Constantine. They based the film on HellBlazer (one of the best, most intriguing comic series ever) and slaughtered it - all Hollywood and no comic. John Constantine is a bleach blonde limey for which Keanu "I can't f@cking act" Reeves isn't even a close approximation. Guy Pierce (Memento anyone?) would've been a top choice for the role but noooooooo, they had to get an A-list schmuck. Second, even from the previews I could tell they trashed the spirit of the comic. Constantine did not run around with cross-shaped guns or any of that crap. I don't want any part of that peice of tripe because it'll piss me off to no end the whole time I watch it. Anyone that wants to make a true comic book adaptation film needs to do exactly what they did with Sin City.
I thought Ocean's 12 was alright, not as good as the first one. I agree with Nephilim on who should of starred in Constantine, Memento is one of my all-time favorites. I make all of my friends watch it. I'm gonna watch A Dirty Shame tonight, all the John Water's talk got me interested in the new one. I agree I,Robot was a great flick, the robots looked like a photoshop come to life. Haven't had time to read the novel but I hear it's alot better than the movie.
I am watching "Twister" tonight on TNT out of boredom. What a piece of cow flop that was. Those of us who live here in Tornado Alley the effects were comical, the people are portrayed as ignorant hill-billies. I especially like the tornadoes--completely wrong in almost every detail. The look about 50-feet wide and 300 feet tall. The last big one that passed by here (1999) was 5,600 feet wide at the base, 73,000 feet high and clocked at 318 mph...fastest wind ever recorded on Earh. I hope no one ever tries to do what they did in that movie. The ending scene brought true belly-laughs--they had their feet up in the air as it passed over them. Absolutely no one has, or ever will do that. Someday I hope someone makes the story accurately, it can be quite fascinating. I find them incalculably dangerous.
Guy Pearce is a great actor. Memento was pretty cool, obviously a tad confusing. i loved Twister for comedy value, pure and simple, it is daft, but then they gotta make money i guess. haven't yet seen Sin City
Momento is one of the best films ever. here is a little tip when you watch that movie, black & white is running forward and color is running backwards
I want to see sky high. Super power school or spy schools are cool. Just like x-man and spy kids. I like the computer effect on super power stuff. and for spy kids i love there technology.
I saw "Million Dollar Baby"--winner of Best Picture at last Academy Awards. It was well-made, well-acted, especially by Hillary Swank. I did notice how amazingly close she looks in this movie to a teenage Judy Garland. She could do an excellent new version of "Wizard of Oz". Clint Eastwood was good as usual--but they don't try to hide his age and he looks old--but still great acting. Morgan Freeman was excellent, as he always is...he is one of my favorite actors. He did background narrative in this one a la "Shawshank Redemption". I also like how he lives in his small hometown in Mississippi and not in Hollywood.
i saw Hide and Seek, enjoyed it though it was fairly predictable. also watched Ninja Scroll as am just getting the Anime bug, it was brilliant.
There is a company on eBay that sells 50-paks of movies for $19.95. I have several including 'horror'. I watched "Horror of Spider Island" (the creatures looks more like ticks than spiders...but a good ones) which was a real hoot. Best of all this co. (Treeline Productions) has gotten pristine copies or remastered them...they are excellent quality.
Yes, just week ago there was "mondo night" on the local TV channel and it was just perfect way to refresh memories of those movies: Too bad that the whole genre went overloaded by B-grade stuff after 70's, most of the older products are quite good - actually even by today's standards - because they show really interesting oddities or historical related shockumentary from around the world instead of lousy and fake accident material like in Faces Of Death series. Mondo Cane 1 & 2 are very good examples for plain freakshows and Africa Addio is very heavy stuff in it's seriousness. Aww, don't say it was that Creature Feature version from few years ago? Mermaid (in it's human form) was beautiful but everything else in this movie was so bad that it was hilarious to watch >D I decided to direct my movie hobby to a little different tracks by buying LD player and bunch of discs, there's some really unknown japanese stuff and other rare releases coming: I'm already very excited about them and it's very good sign, because before this I felt for a long time that I just wasn't really interested about watching movies at all.
Romero--always like your comments...you know a hell of a lot about cinema obscura. RE: The Mondo movies...the first one you mentioned, "Mondo Cane", the original--I always remember the part about a tribe of hidden people in the jungle who had a leader who when he chose another wife (he had many), the woman was locked in a cage-like box and they fed her 24 hrs a day to get her as FAT as possible--the "king" who was a skinny 90-yr old loved extreme Rubenesque wives! Also--the song "More" from "Mondo Cane" won an academy award for best song of 1963. I saw this in a theater on the big screen. Freaked me out. nb."Cane" is pronounced 'ka-nee'.
Jmark and romero, You fellas ever see Begotten? I don't think I was ever the same after watching that. Bought it and watched it once.
Neph--I don't think I have ever heard of it, which says a lot cause I have always been a horror movie maven...I just looked in Videohound Retreiver, couldn't find it. But, at www.movies2.nytimes.com and Susan Sontag called it "one of the 10 most important movies ever". I am eager to find more about it. Thanks for the mention of it.
I forgot something...did you guys think either of these movies was good..."Monolith Monsters" and "Kronos" (a vehicle with some fantastic shock absorbers.
