Henry Sanada!!! I've watched recently just few movies, my bunch of unwatched ones have been reducing so fast that I've tried to save them until my latest boughts will arrive. Black Christmas was very good horror film about mysterious basket case who terrorizes girls in the small dormitory by frightening them with phone calls and killing them after a while. That sounds dull and actually it's very used plot especially in slasher subgenre, but this movie was made in 70's - much before homicidal phone prankers became a cliche. Along that fact Black Christmas is also very well made, it keeps it's suspense and thrilling atmosphere till the end and lurking killer's maniacal appearances caused a lot of chills. Another masterpiece was Demons Of The Mind, underrated Hammer horror which is very different compared to other films from same production company. Story tells about a man who suffers from severe mental problems, and who keeps his children locked as prisoners because he's afraid that his illness has been passed down to them. At the same time nasty murders begin in the village nearby... This was very dark and pessimistic movie, but also very interesting because the characters were designated very cleverly and the secret behind the killing spree didn't got revealed too early. Then there came a turd: The Dark, clumsy and stupid tale about an alien in human form, who went berserk in the dark alleys of the city killing it's victims by tearing them with claws or shooting lethal rays from his eyes making them to explode. Most of the movie was just boring talking between monster hunters, monster itself was shown just for about 10 minutes and most of that footage was so badly edited that I couln't see if it's really a monster or just some 10-feet tall drunk creeping in the shadows. Well, I'm still going to keep this movie because it took 3 nights to see it entirely: If I ever have sleeping problems I watch this again. At next weekend I'm gonna get really loaded and watch Diamonds Are Forever or Invasion USA, these two are absolutely best movies for watching with huge amount of beer.
Came back from a 3-week abroad holiday, and watched a few movies on those 16 hour flights. I must say, Air Canada has improved their services and comfort a GREAT deal, their interfaces are extremely impressive. Kingdom of Heaven Action was stylish yet realistic, extremely impressive, in fact, why wasn't this a big box office hit? Madagascar Hardyharlarious. You MUST watch this! Charlie and the Chocolate Factory I can't say whether it was good or bad. The film is just... wierd. It's like watching Clockwork Orange, you just can't say whether it's a good or bad film... Divergence (CHINESE FILM) The action scenes were above my expectations from a chinese movie, and it is not a fairytale ending either. I liked it, and any chinese movie fan should give it a look. Sahara A fun action-filled film, great laughs and it's one of those movies that shine when you're watching it with family. Great action too! Don't expect anything deep though. =)
Are you kidding me! Tennebaums was a Great Film. It' is what you call a smart comedy. I didnt rely on much visuals to get it humor or a "funny" character, it was purely based on the dialog, which was great. I recently saw The Laramie Project. That film was very powerful. It was based on the interviews done by a New York Theater Group that went to Laramie, Wyoming to interveiw the residents about their reclections on the Matthew Sheppard Murder (based on a true story). There were a lot of happy and sad moments in it. I Recommend it Highly!
The "Laramie Project" was quite good. Especially because the makers of the film came to document what happened--not just rant and rave at those who had nothing to do with the crime. I saw "Hide and Seek" with Robert DeNiro..a good 'thriller'--well done with a good script. It was kinda scary at times--and the secret at the end does not reveal itself early on. I also saw "Plague of the Zombies" I heard about here. An interesting aside here--it is a Hammer film which are always good. BUT--what was interesting was the quality on the DVD--it was pristine. A perfect master tape and even the lighting was a standout. That was good, but the movie was only OK...not enough zombies for me. If Hammer has the quality of this DVD on all their movies that would be fabulous. For balance I also saw a documentary called "Volcanoes of the Deep Sea"--which mentioned that it was an IMAX movie put on DVD. IMAX is stunning and incomparable to me. Of course transferred to DVD made it just a regular film...however it was obviously a sharper picture. It was 45 mins. long as most IMAX movies are. The underwater scenes (9,000 ft down) shot from the famous submersible "Alvin" were superb. The fumeroles and lava and the bizarre critters down there were really fascinating. Of it's genre...it is top notch. I will be getting "Alone In the Dark" and "The Ring Two" to watch this weekend.
Alone In The Dark is by Uwe Boll which means crappyness galore. He makes videogame films, and he makes them suck. =) Anyway, The Ring Two didn't satisfy many watchers either, so this weekend might be a bit of a downer for you. =|
I find it interesting which movies others like/dislike. Aside from the big blockbuster type movies, tastes run all over the place. I don't get enough monster movies, and I have pretty much dug all I can out of the past. I need a movie like "Alien" was the FIRST time you saw it.
I watched Night Of The Creeps last night - again. I think that was 10th time or something like that but it's still very excellent horror comedy: Very funny lines, in-genre jokes and enough creepy crawlies to keep watcher in his seat till the end credits. Are you going to watch original versions or the remakes? I haven't seen neither old or new Alone In The Dark, but I've heard that original is quite nasty - should get it from somewhere. Asian version of Ring 2 didn't get even near to first one's horrifying moods so it was a big dissappointment for me, so I'm actually waiting to see hollywood one because it might be actually better. Same here, I've been consentrated horror movies and euro sleaze for years and I'll still find those genres interesting enough to continue digging: I almost lost my faith for this hobby some time ago because I started to feel like "when I've seen one I've seen them all", but I got my passion back by setting more strict limits to myself for what to buy and what not - no more movies which are just fairly interesting. I watch also movies from different genres but very randomly because they just won't be satisfying enough to watch, especially blockbuster movies are like poison for me because nowadays most of them won't offer anything new to see, but it's still nice to read what other watchers have liked about them. Just a moment ago I bought a huge load of movies, mostly older horror or asian related ones. I think there's not many people (except Jmark, maybe) who might be interested about this kind of stuff but anyway, this is what I'm going to watch in near future: The Strange Vice of Mrs. Wardh - http://akas.imdb.com/title/tt0066412/ Olivia - http://akas.imdb.com/title/tt0082841/ Scream & Scream Again - http://akas.imdb.com/title/tt0064949/ Torture Garden - http://akas.imdb.com/title/tt0062384/ Fear In The Night - http://akas.imdb.com/title/tt0068577/ Washing Machine - http://akas.imdb.com/title/tt0105785/ Delirium - http://akas.imdb.com/title/tt0093043/ You'll Die At Midnight - http://akas.imdb.com/title/tt0091553/ Danger: Diabolik - http://akas.imdb.com/title/tt0062861/ To The Devil... Thanks Romero for another interesting note on movies...I am in a retro mood this morning...Remember any of these? Burnt Offerings The Creeping Unknown Wolfen Trilogy of Terror (TV movie) This Island Earth The Mole People (starring Ward Cleaver) The Crawling Eye The Tingler Hellroller American Psycho The Evil Dead Second Hand Lions Sunset Boulevard And a question: What was the family last name in the Wolfman movies, and who played the old gypsy woman whose son was the werewolf first infected? Did you ever notice after the first "Alien"...many space-type movies and others always have jets of steam blowing everywhere? I mean...What the F*** is THAT all about? For about the last 7-8 years, when you see a car ad on TV, try to find just ONE that does not have a car sliding sideways, clearly out of control.
I know some of them but I haven't seem them all yet. Trilogy Of Terror... were that the movie with Zuni the devil doll? I've noticed the same, those movies supposed to show how technology has evolved in the future but those spaceship corridors seems more like boiler rooms than a part of the ship full of hi-tech.
Speaking of old SciFi movies has anyone seen "Dark Star"? This was the first movie that John Carpenter directed and Dan O'Bannon was one of the actors. I believe he wrote the screen play for "Alien". They were in college when they made this movie for a rediculously small amount of money. Their space suits were made from Hoover vacuum cleaner parts. It's a classic. Dave
I havent had a chance to go out see any new movies lately, but I discovered INDemand with my local cable company and it is great. If you have InDemand, use it, it is awesome. Anyways, I have been checking out some flix on it. I finally saw [bold]Harold And Kumar go the White Castle[/bold]. I know it was mentioned already, but it was pretty funny. I also checked out [bold]white chicks[/bold] only because I had tons of people telling my to see it. It was pretty bad! I had to mix in a Chick Flick for my women, so we saw [bold]Little Black Book[/bold] and I have to say, that movie wasnt that bad, it had a little twist at the end, but like any other chick flicks it got REAL sappy at the end.
Romero--yes--"Trilogy of Terror" did have a segment with that Zuni kachina doll with that little nasty knife chasing Karen Black. Of my list above...I liked "Burnt Offerings" with Oliver Reed and Bette Davis (a cameo). It had the best story-line...one of the best "houses that eat people" genre. Remember the old one with Roddy McDowell--"Legend of Hell House" (1973)?
I just remembered some things I liked...they were on cable a long time ago--they wefre short comedies that parodied big movies..."Pork Lips Now", "Hardware Wars" were a couple of them.
I watched a lot like love and it was ok. saw alexander it was kinda bad. I want to see 40year old virgin that movie looks so funny.
I agree "Alexander" sucked. Big stars wandering in the wilderness for plot and directions. I thought "Gladiator" was dull...too long and too much conversation in dark about crap. Did anyone see "Clay Pigeons"? A great story--not unlike the old movie "Detour" from the 1940s.
anyone seen "King Aurthur", it was ok, a pretty god story, you get lost sometimes though. lots of action, etc.
One of my favorite trio of horror was the movies, "It's Alive, II, III". I think many decided to not have children after the first one born chewed up the delivery team.
