Are Laptops limited to low volume?

Been making a lot of my own DVD music videos for awhile now. Everything is fine, the sound quality and volume is sufficient on my desktop when I plug the head phones into the speaker.

My laptop does not have an audio out, just video out jack
and I plug the head phones in the front right next to the
microphone plug. (I don't use that)

The sound on the lap top thru the ear phones is high quality but can't get the volume anywhere near my desktop.

I NEED LOUD, not stupidly loud, but loud enough to say "I need to turn this down. The driver is upgraded.

I went out and bought an AMP (criterion T3000) and that just distorts the sound as it gets louder. How are you guys with latops dealing with low volumes? All my settings are set to nearly high, and I mean every setting.

I must be missing something. Anybody?
