No way, never - don't go outside the bounds of your own Sovereign Territory; watch but never touch, follow but never intrude etc. etc.
Oh dear god no, I am paranoid enough without that ;)

    Here's an interesting thing:
When in a Turing Test, a higher than statistically average portion of "Experts", when questioned in their area of expertise, were judged to be machines....

Are the Experts becoming more expert?, or less emotional?, are the judgment criteria biased towards emotive content?, or are the expectations slipping?

How easy is it to tell the difference between a well-written program and a dispassionate expert?

Eeee Bah Gum, when I were a kid, Firewalls were PROPER Firewalls, wi' bricks an' mortar an' all, t'were none o' that e-lec-trickery stuff. EEee! it were rough!!

    Byeeee...

    drchips,

So you're not going to build some cult compound with lots of machine guns, take all our worldly possessions and marry all our daughters? I heard you make some mean Kool-Aid too!

    PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT

"The Reverend drchips is holed up with several hundred followers in a remote farmhouse in Finland. They are all professing servitude to an as yet unidentified deity called "dRD". They have been stockpiling weapons, ammunition, blank DVDs, Pop Tarts and, more ominously, large quantities of grape Kool-Aid and rat poison. Officials have warned against any contact with the cultists and ask that nobody sell them any ammunition or Pop Tarts.

The Reverend is demanding a soverign nation to be called "New Afterdawn" and exemptions from any and all established copyright laws

Finnish officials have refused to comment"

[bold]A Digital Phenomenon: The "NEW AFTERDAWNERS"[/bold]

The Genesis of the "New Afterdawner" Movement is shrouded in mystery, though its influences and parentage is easily understood.

The "New AfterDawners" are a sub-sect of the Afterdawn community, who are highly respected within the Religious Movement known as "Rippers".

As far as our "reporter" has been able to ascertain, the "New AfterDawners" are led by "The Doc", a shadowy figure about whom little is known.

He first came to light within the Afterdawn movement as a NEWBIE (a novice), and within a few short weeks was known as a MEMBER (akin to a priest), this has been a truly meteoric rise, bypassing the JUNIOR MEMBER level - it has been noted by some adherents of the faith that he may be destined for SENIOR MEMBER (a cross between an Elder and a Priest of the Faith) soon, despite his proselytising and lack of tolerance with "1337 DooDZ".

    It is rumoured that the true beginnings of the "New AfterDawners" came about after a public clash as illustrated here;

The following is an excerpt from the "Book of the New AfterDawners", ISBN 666-DVD-RIP:
Your reporter was able to track down and talk with some of the adherents of the faith that witnessed the confrontation.

All of these people are known by their monikers (it is an article of the faith that adherents use "nicknames" when communing with their bretheren) and many have expressed a new level of respect for "The Doc" after witnessing the Taming of the Beast, though there have been some rumblings and expressions of disquiet over the display of such power in a Public Forum.

Careful investigation by our "reporter" indicates the internal organisation of the "New AfterDawners" to be based closely on the precepts as used by the original Afterdawn, with tolerance of differing methodologies being the norm.

Within the structure there can be found the following groups:

The "Purists", those who extoll the teaching of "DVD Decrypter", "DVD2One", "IFOEdit", "RecordNow" and other powerful and arcane techniques - not all are zealots, the belief in "Nero" is strong among the "Purists" and is tolerated.

The "One-Click Transcoders" who chant the mantras according to "DVD Shrink" and "DVD X Copy", some of whom claim miraculous results with their incantations.

The rest seem to be "Undecided" as to the best path to take, though all strongly believe that the "New AfterDawners" are their route to Salvation.

It must be said though, there is little rivalry between the groups, and all try to aid the "Undecided" in any way they can, something that our world should take heed of....

One "Nephilim" inadvertantly published the secret location of "The Doc" and his closest followers along with their "preparations" for the care and protection of the "Faithful"
    - the revealed location and other so-called facts have yet to be confirmed but "The Authorities" seem a little uneasy, and the "Great Leader" of the original Afterdawn, one known as "dRD", has yet to comment.

Is this the Dawning (sic) of a great new movement in our time, or the beginning of another "WACO"?

Only time will tell, and your "reporter" is looking forward to seeing how it all pans out.

    ROTFLOL :)

I'd like to just type few thoughts in here -- I've enjoyed the conversation so far, but wanted to make couple of things clear for everybody.

Things have changed over the last year or so rather dramatically in AfterDawn.com forums -- thousands of new members coming in and old ones "retiring". Also, this has led to a situation where quite a few of our moderators have "retired" from forums, while number of messages per day in forums has peaked to new record heights (600 a day at the moment), meaning that moderators don't have time to put an effort to every single post any more like they used to back in 2002 or so.

Also, the growth of non-English speakers obviously causes some communication problems -- I am, afterall, a non-Engllish speaker myself as well and I know from the past that when you try to get help to your problems and English isn't your main language, the least helpful thing that you can ever get as a reply is a complaint about your grammar :)

But yes, writing bad English because you're not a native English speaker and writing bad English because you have this strong feeling of your "street background" (wtf are you doing with computers then :) are totally different things :)

Also, TYPING EVERYTHING IN CAPS is really annoying and I'll probably one day choose to ban couple of users who do that regularly. Same thing applies for use of meaningful sentences, line breaks, commas, etc. Everybody -- no matter what language you speak -- knows how to use them. Or if not, we probably need to somehow enforce basic education as the criteria for aD membership in very near future.

Anyway, thanks guys for everything that you've done and hopefully keep on doing for the forums by posting messages, helping others, etc. As always, I do apologize the absence of AfterDawn.com admins in the forums -- admins are the guys who run this site and this baby that we started 5 years ago has grown to the scale that we barely have time to sleep nowadays, so visiting forums more often is sorta out of question, unfortunately. But luckily we have very capable team of moderators that are willing to help and normally communicate very efficiently to us when there are problems in forums.

    dRD:

I don't think anybody is going to complain about the admins after all the improvements that have been made here. And if they do, we can always send somebody to "have a talk with them" ;) I found this place the same day I bought my first DVD burner, and I started making backups the same day. And it was a lot harder to do it then. There's a lot more information here now than there was then, so you must be doing something right.

    Nephilim:

Princos? That's pretty harsh! If you're going to go over the top like that, why not make him use a DVD-RAM only burner?

dRD, no complaints here. The growth of AD is quite a testament to your, and everyone else down the line's work and dedication here. I'm disabled and have plenty of time but this is the only site I visit on a daily basis. I love getting ideas and help here then trying new and different things.

It's fairly easy to pick up on the fact that a poster doesn't speak English natively and I applaud them for trying. As I said before, English is very contradictory and strange. So many words are spelled the same but can have multiple meanings. Many languages are structured similarly, just with different words but not English.

I think the nuts and bolts of this thread is that when you speak English it's simply common courtesy to write a clear and concise post that others can understand. Use gibberish when you IM your buddies that understand it but don't get your panties in a twist when people here either can't understand or don't want to deal with your post.

Hmmm, interesting points, the basic being that we need to know what the problems are before we can help. Personally I prefer to post with at least a modicum of grammar. I very rarely criticise anybodies grammar or spelling (except my own & possibly DRchips). This is not a slur on Dr chips. In fact it is a sign of affection & respect. It is not very often you can talk to somebody about the string theory/quantum mechanics. I do enjoy taking the mickey out of situations as my numerous posts prove. Going over the top is good fun!!
Having said all of that I find it more difficult to read some of the posts, this is due to slang etc. I also can speak a reasonable amount of French & German. That is not bad for somebody who is British!
I commend any body communicating in a foreign tongue, it can be very difficult. I know!
Above all we have to have fun on the way & a bit of ribbing does not do anybody any harm. Anyway here's to our marvellous banter which I find extremely enjoyable. If I have offended anybody then I apologize unreservedly.
    All the best everybody!

I'm sorry that this thread seems to have "Petered" out (tis that a ScubaPete dig??). And yet, I continue on - as all can attest, my spelling and punctuation is perhaps ‘worserer’ than anyone's in the forum - (an award ? - Yea, or NOT ! - it’s what I thought - NOT :-()

I’ve heard nothing about the apparent acceptance being shown to certain members by the Administration and Moderators. I speak of members who seem to post nothing but intimidating, maligning and destructive comments directed at any and everybody they can - It’s especially harmful to the new comers who assume that, because it appears to be tolerated, this is what the A/D forum is about. I’m not referring to those who don’t know better or those dealing with a second tongue, I refer to those whose goal is to disrupt threads and endeavor to wreak havoc wherever they go. Building and maintaining a reputation shouldn’t be based on exposure to “beasty976”, “Devil60” and others like them. They serve no useful purpose and not only can we get along without them; we’d be better off without them.

In the American Justice system we have a “One, Two, Three strikes and you’re OUT” laws. Translation; One, gets you a warning, the second offense, another warning (I’m assuming that they can count and by now they’ll also understands what constitutes a violation) - The third infraction gets them a 30-day suspension and the final violation, as the “Doc” would say Byeeeeeee !

Well they’re my thoughts, poor punctuation, misspellings and all :p)

I thought the american justice was its only ilegal if you get caught. And if you do then you pay the big bucks and pull an OJ. Thats so the rich can do what ever they want.

But after that little tantrum, I am really surprise this thread has been dorment. I have noticed posts that I have made that are not what I have intended. Now how may haves are in that sentence.

But to quote the great drchips:

I'm a bit late to this thread, but just had to post after reading drChips post to beasty.

    I couldn't stop laughing, that's some funny sh@#t!
Then when I saw him reply, it sent me cracking up all over again.

I knew you had some knowledge from what I'd heard, but I had no idea!
Thanks for making me laugh, I needed it.

And condolences to Beasty, sometimes you just can't see what's lurking around the corner. Glad to see you made up and everythings ok.

The sad thing about this is Beasty doesn't respect the “Doc” he's just afraid of him -

Given the off chance that he feels the "Doc" isn't around, he'll threaten, disrupt and antagonize whomever he can, tis a piety, that -

Hey Pete, Everyone, Dr Chips. I don't know how I missed this thread and all the FUN. Went back to the start and read it all the way through. Doc you are DA MAN. Your little lesson in tracking had me laughing all the way through this. Great job once again. I loved it.
