Audio Sound needs balancing - how do I do this?

I have a DIVX video which, unfortunately, has sound which jumps from being very loud, crisp and clear, to being quite quiet. I think that this is because it was originally in Dolby 5.1 mode and the wrong channels have been encoded when it was converted to AVI.

I have Goldwave, which I hope can solve the problem - which is this: How do I balance out the sound so that the whole video remains at the same volume throughout?
I don't know alot when it comes to Goldwave. All I can say is that it's MPEG 1 layer 3 when I run it through GSpot.
All I want is balanced sound. Not Loud and quiet areas.
    Thanks in advance.

I'm searching frantically around the Afterdawn website, and now I'm not so sure that I've placed this in the right section.

    Don't want to multi-post though...
