avi to mp4

anyone know of a program or simple process to take my avi collection and put them in mp4 so i can put them on my iPod? and a little compression wouldn't hurt either. i've been looking around but i cannot really find anything. mac is perfered, but i have pc as well. thanks ahead of time.
