How do check to see if a stick of memory is functional? I got 1 gb stick of pc2700 but when I put it my cpu it registered as 512. Then my computer started acting crazy and would not start up properly. Any advice?

Thanks for the link. That looks pretty daunting but I guess if I just read the instructions fully before starting I should be able to stay out of trouble!!!!
