just wondering if the DQ60 was essentially the 1640 that gets such high praise around here. i was hoping to buy a couple 1640s but noticed newegg only had the 1620 and the DQ60. usually when newegg is out of stock, they still show the product. but i thought maybe the DQ60 was a replacement for the 1640. anyone know?

I looked all over for one and couldn't find it. The 1640 is a good drive. Not sure about the new 1650 though. Just out. I think newegg has them.

    thanks again ruger.

i'll look around for the 1640. i hate to go somewhere other than newegg for my hardware (i'm pretty loyal to them) but i might just have to. i didn't see the 1650 on newegg yet and besides, i'd rather go with a drive that everyone seems to have a good experience with rather than be a guinea pig for a new drive.

I'll save you some time ... Most people that have the DW1640 listed for sale don't have it. They'll have the DQ60 and tell you that they're the same ... WRONG .. the DQ60 is made by Teac and is a POS. I found a store on Ebay that has a few DW1640's at the following link:
    http://search.ebay.com/benq-dw1640_W0QQfnuZ1QQfsooZ1QQfsopZ3

If you read the thread at the following link from the CD Freaks website .. it'll say that the HiVal branded burners available at CompUSA are BenQ DW1640's ..

The only bad think about most ebay sales is that they rape you on the shipping charges. $19.99 to ship a burner from texas. It wouldn't cost $8.00.

I got the RMA to return the DQ60 which I haven't even gotten yet, and reordered a NEC 3550a. I probably should have just stuck with my LG as it is performing flawlessly so far.

Oh well, from what I read the 3550 is a great burner, but a fair reader, so I'll use the lg to read and the 3550 to burn for a while. Glad that I am not strapped for funds or this could be frustrating.

i actually built a computer for my sister and used the NEC drive. seems to work ok, but she doesn't really use it all that much. i have to say, it is very loud when reading.

Whew, glad that I don't sit there and watch the computer while it's working then. LOL this is great, one bit of bad news on top of another. This is turning out to not be my day! LOL I gotta laugh about it hahahahahahahaha
