    Open QSuite

    Click on Boo Type

Under the Drive Setting column, you will see DVD+RW, DVD+R and DVD+R DL. To the right of each is a column. In that column (heading of Current Write Book Type) it should say DVD-ROM for each of the three types of disc. If it doesn't click on the 'set to' box in the modify column.

    Done deal...

I ordered a BenQ DW-1640 the other day. After ordering I came across a thread in the forum point to the software downloads for this burner on the Benq site. I use Windows 98. The Benq site says the software on can be used in Win 2000 & XP. Is that correct? If so, how does this drive perform in Win 98? Will I get the speed and accuracy that I've come to understand is quite good in this drive?? If not, any suggestions, short of changing my Operating System, to get the most performance from this drive??
    Thanks

The Download Center lists W98, WinME, W2K and WXP.

    http://support.benq.com/front/BenqMain.asp?MenuHead=128&ShowType=program&FileURL=service/driverlist.asp&Dataid=18367&downloadclass=Driver&product=3731&langu=null&ops=null&GenMenu=&RootId=undefined

Now as far as the QSuite .. I think that you need W2K or WXP for that ... However, the Book Type Utility will work with W98 .. As far as you wanting to upgrade your OS .. experienced burners seem to really like W2k Pro

    Thanks catfreak-----but:
That is the D/L site for the newer firmware updates. I was talking about QSuite and the Booktyping utility from an earlier thread by you. The site only shows D/L's for 2000 and XP. I don't want to change my OS from Win 98. I was asking about using the DW-1640 under Win98 concerning speed and accuracy of the 1640. Or does QSuite support enhance it's use that much more under XP or 2000? Will the performance of the 1640 under Win98 be up to or near the rated speeds, etc?

Any information or advice would be greatly appreciated....

Again--------that is firmware. I'm asking about QSuite and Booktyping software for the DW-1640. --OR-- How does the 1640 perform under Windows 98 without QSuite and Booktyping software that I can't find on the BenQ site to download for Windows 98 ???????? I realize that the firmware is there for Win 98 !

Listen Wayne .. I'm sure that the BenQ will not run as well with an outdated OS like W98 .. However, since my PC's run on XP and 2000, I'll never know (or honestly, care) .. The ONLY way that your question can be accurately answered is if someone tries the BenQ with W98 then either changes their OS or swaps drives to 2000 or XP .. this just ain't gonna happen ...

The bottom line is this: If you're gonna stick with W98 then you'll just have to deal with the BenQ with no QSuite ... At least you can still booktype ...

And here is the booktyping utility: http://support.benq.com/front/BenqMain.asp?MenuHead=128&ShowType=program&FileURL=service/driverlist.asp&Dataid=15041&downloadclass=Software&product=3731&langu=null&ops=2975&GenMenu=&RootId=undefined

Thanks catfreak-------that helped a good bit. Booktyping was the main concern. Didn't mean to sound pushey or anything. Just that my computer isn't enough to handle XP or 2000, and not in position to upgrade my computer just yet. Hoping someone still used this antique OS that I use and could give me some insight on performance with the BenQ DW-1640 under Win 98. And thanks again!

I've got xp home on my backup pc:
    598 mhz p-3 celeron
    256 mbs rimm
    9 gb hd
    30 gb hd
    USB 1.0
    Benq 1620

Despite the limited specs which are under the advisable level of most peeps, and I keep a very lean system: This pc has not produced a coaster in over 400+ dvd burns.I just burned one at 16x on it last night and perfect playback.

She's just slightly slower.Uncompressed backups/burned at 4x in 35 minutes. But those compressed ones will really magnify that backup time.

Believe it or not,dvd decrypter in iso read and write is a lot quicker on this small pc than using the same iso read and write in my main pc in my sig,go figure?

I've had the 1640 for a while now and no problems. Liked it so much I bought a second to go in my wife's pc.

Any other benq 1640 users having trouble with the q-suite,for the booktyping?

Mine's been screwy. Once I set it,it's ok for a few days, then goes back to dvd+r instead of dvd-rom on my backups.Same with +rw media. I've noticed it twice now.

I uninstalled q-suite,then when I tried to go to the main benq web site,I get a page that has a picture of a guy digging a hole and saying the site is being updated. That was last night and a little while ago. I skipped out of there and went to the downloads. No q-suite was available, just fw updates. I then searched on this thread for catfreaks link:
    http://support.benq.com/files/Storage/Software/QSuite/QSuite

I get nothing. Anyone else having trouble with those benq links?
Maybe they are repairing this utility?

Thanks drffulton. I'll bookmark that link and ditch my old link. I re-loaded it from my copy I had on my portable usb drive and seems to be ok for now. It looks like v2.1. I'll stick with the v2.0 for now and pay close attention to those settings.
    Later!

After reading this thread, and some other comments users had made, I placed my order for the BENQ DW-1640 from NCIX.com...

    Burner $48.70
    S/H $17.02
    TOTAL: $65.72

    Not too bad!

I hope this burner does a better job then my current MATSHITA DVD-RAM LF-D310, which seemed to make more coasters than DVD backups...

I paid $38 total for just bare drive only benq 1640,including shipping from newegg.com last month in a weekend special!

It should drastically reduce that coaster rate. I'm dissappointed with 1 coaster out of 300!

Good Luck with that drive chochi!

after a BQ USB unit sat unused and unopened for 4 months, finally tried it. Appears AOK tho no extensive burning. It does have a problem reading DVD RW movies recorded on a GO Video DVD burner (appliance unit).
More later as I keep using it.

This looks like a replacement for My Plextor CD burner. Now I'll have two DVD burners and one DVD reader.

@ ItsLarry .. have you updated your firmware? That should cure your RW problem ... I read RW discs recorded by both of my LiteOn LVW-5005 set top recorders .. and it performs flawlessly ...
