I've recently purchased a BenQ DW1655 burner. The thing works wonderfully as far as burning DVD's, CD's etcetera. I've been having major issues trying to burn Lightscribe labels. The ones that have been completed look beautiful, but most of the time the drive either doesn't recognize the media or just freezes. I can't eject the disk without shutting the system down. I'm just wondering if anyone has encoutered the same issue and if there is any way to solve it.

It sounds like a packet writing software has taken control of your computer. Do you have InCD, DLA, or Drag to Disc installed?

I don't have any packet writing software installed. I even went as far as reformatting and reloading windows. That didn't work either. I think the new windows boot held a lot of the old hardware configurations though so now I'm stumped again.

I wish someone else had any idea. I've combed through forums and have not seen anyone with similar issues. I'm ready to rip the drive out and toss it to the wind.

Have you contacted BenQ, surely the drive is still under warranty.

I just had something interesting happen. I uninstalled then reinstalled the drive. Funny thing is the found new hardware bubble popped up afterwards and installed my onboard sound drivers which I never use. Now I'm wondering if there may be some sort of hardware conflict. Maybe it's just some weird fluke. Oh the humanity!

From what I've experienced sometime the media that you use can cause problems with media recognition. The BenQ drives are really great for contrast and readability but sometimes that media that you get has defects within it. Try getting a few discs from another brand and that might help. Also too, if you wanna get even better contrast (if you haven't done so already) go to www.lightscribe.com and look under the little downloads box and update your Lightscribe System Software and then get a little program called the Extended Contrast Lableing Utility. It works wonders once you get it. The thing is though, that it increases the time that it takes to burn an image but the quality is so much better.

Thanks for the insight. The problem doesn't seem to be media related though. It's rather odd because if I insert the disk at startup on the LightScribe side it works but if I let the machine run a while and insert it it seems to do strange things like freeze or just take forever and then not recognize the media. My gut instinct tells me it's some sort of driver conflict or something of that nature. I've looked all over the net looking for someone with a similar problem to no avail. If I ever figure this thing out I'll post it here.

I see visions..........visions of Kingnot trying his drive in my PC and finding the drive is defective.

Newegg requires a printed-out slip on the return package so don't send the drive back till I get it to you :)

    Pffft..thank you Jesus.....pffft......thank you Jesus......pffffft.......thank you Jesus :p

I have the same issues. I used HP lighscribe media and everytime I used lightscribe program from OEM Nero, my pc freezes up and has to cold reboot manually. this is very annoying.

I guess, I will just return it as defective. I got it at meritline.com

Quite annoying, indeed. I tried just about every hardware configuration I could think of and nothing worked going that route. I went as far as testing the drive in another computer and had the same result. There must be a bad batch floating around. I purchased my drive from newegg.com. I'll be sending it back to them as soon as I can afford the shipping. Try testing the drive in a friend's computer before you send it back.

My BenQ 1655 dvd burner is ready to ship back to Meritline.com
I spent too much time configuring to install it properly on my pc.
It can not read DVDRW, lightcribe does not work. I am using OEM Nero software that comes with the package.

I spent sleepless night till early morning for 3 straight days and consumed too much cigarettes as well.....I am so frustrated and upset about this BENQ dvd drive 1655. After I refund my money then I can sleep tight...goodluck on your purchase of this dvd drive

While I'm not certain of this, you MIGHT want to stick with BCGB firmware, also. From what I've been reading, the firmware released after that seem to be causing more problems than they fix, at least in the case of those who purchase decent quality media. Personally, BCGB burned my discs the best of any I've tried, and I've been upgrading since BCDB. The differences aren't always noticeable, but the biggest benefit to BCGB is that you don't experience the slowdown issues when you use the "always on" SolidBurn option, which many people like to use (including myself). I have found that even on high end media, the burn quality does improve slightly when you allow the drive to learn the media it's using. This might have nothing at all to do with your Lightscribe issues, but you still want to use the overall best firmware you can get your hands on.

I had noticed that the firmware update exaserbated the LightScribe's erratic behavior. I would like to re-flash back to an earlier firmware, I just have no idea as to where to find any. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I just found this thread about the BenQ 1655. I bought mine over 2 months ago.... mine is in an external box:

I loved the burning ability of this drive..... I get great quality scans of over 96% and my last scan was over 98%! But, after trying to burn my first LightScribe disk the drive would not be recognized as a LightScribe drive. I looked through the forums about this drive to be used as an external you would need the Prolific PL-3507 chip set..... which mine had and still the drive wouldn't be recognized as a LightScribe drive so it wouldn't burn any LightScribe media at all. I sent it back to Meritline...... and they were very nice and talked to me and asked me all sorts of questions about what I did and how I did it and they told me that the only thing was the fireware was defective..... so I use the USB wire now and it's perfect! Meritline did a great job to find what was wrong but still it took weeks for me to get it back ..... at least I'm happy with it now. making great LightScribe disks:

I updated the firmware to BCHB and there are no issues with that firmware. I also use the QSuite so that every time I burn a disk it learns new write strategies and my burned disks are getting better adn better! Sooooo if your drive is having trouble with not recognizing your media or just freezes.... make sure that it's installed properly..... as that was my issue..... went from firewire to USB!

Also I found that SureThing CD Labeler 4 SE does a better job for LightScribe burning than Nero! you can get this free software from the LightScribe home page.... download area. good luck. and hope your problems go away and start enjoying this great drive!

    KingNot,

I have been having the exact same problems you have been having. What kind of motherboard do you have? I received mine from newegg as well.

I'm not quite sure which model motherboard I own. It is a PC Chips board that supports the AMD Athalon XPM 2800+ processor. That is interesting that you are also having the same issue with your drive. I posted earlier that I did test my drive in another system and had the EXACT same results with the Lightscribe function (malfunction). They may have just recieved a bad batch of drives is what I'm thinking. I will contact NewEgg and try to find out what the deal is.
