@thrixie.......there are many reasons why a CD would stop playing in a drive...... maybe you should clean it, since you've been using it for such a long time, or maybe the disk was used so much that it became warped or something that stops the drive from reading! Does your drive read other CDs/DVDs?

My 1655 reads and burns great! Despite the lightscribe issue it's a fabulous drive. I did some lightscribe work this weekend an my stepdad's HP drive and I have to say the BenQ is way above in labeling quality. The HP labels burned very poorly even with the latest firmware.

I just got my drive (Oct 2006) and I have just the opposite problem. My drive burns coasters when it comes to the dvd part, but the lightscribe labels seem to be fine. So I have nice looking coasters, but coasters nontheless. Firmware is BCDB, and when I checked the site, that was the lastest. I'm using Memorex DVD+R v1.2 media, burned at 4x. When I burn the save .iso file in my NEC drive, it reads in all my players fine. But both burns in the BenQ drive have not worked. Any thoughts? (other than just burn in the NEC drive then label in the BenQ drive)

I'd advise looking around until you find BCGB firmware. cdfreaks.com probably has it, or you can just Google it, and I'm sure you'll find a site that you can download it from. It's not the absolute latest, but from what I can find, it's pretty much the best (most compatible, fewest overall issues) for the 1655, and I've had nothing but good results using it.

@fatdawg: Well, it may be "older" in terms of the absolute latest (There are BCHB and BCIB out there, I believe), but it's newer than what your drive had before, and does make many improvements on BCDB, and I know from experience, as that's what my drive had when it shipped, also. Not the worst out there, but not nearly as good as the BCGB, as you've seen. Glad it worked for you, happy burning!
