hi, someone may have asked this question already, but i was hoping someone could point me in the right direction in choosing an antivirus program. i currently have norton internet security, but it's about to expire so i might have to buy a new one, but norton just annoys me most of the time. so if anyone out there knows a really good program, please help me out. thanks in advance!

it's a bloated hog of system resources that rarely catches everything other anti-virii do and often causes system conflicts.

Norton uses alot of resources, it has gone downhill since 2003 edition. 2006 is simply crap and slows down your comp if you have a middle end computer. Its no longer user friendly.

If your subscription runs out, try uninstalling the product with RNAV.exe and use registry cleaner. Then reinstall the product. Worked for me in the past, unsure if LiveReg is still removable or not.

Otherwise ; AVG free edition and NOD32 will be good to try out.

On the other hand, you, yourself will be the best antivirus, as long you're not surfing for cracks, serials, porn insecure websites.

i've got an slow computer, so i would prefer a program that would not slow down the computer even more. Does AVG slow the pc down? i think my cpu's a celeron or something, and it's processing speed is like 2Ghz and 1 MB of RAM (correct me if i'm wrong :) but like it takes ages for the pc to load norton internet security at start up... which is really agitating me

For me tried the free ones AVG and Avast. Didnt like either of them. AVG was hit and miss and Avast scanned too fast for me to believe it was as indepth as it should be. I have settled on AntiVir Personal Edition and find it very capable.

damn, and here i was finally convinced that i'm getting AVG but someone had to say that Norton was great! My only problem with Norton is just that it's slow when i try to use it (i have to wait for like 2 min just for the options to load up), or maybe i should just get a new pc...

Actually, Norton isn't that great. Look here at zippyd's link to see how they all stackup.

If you want free, get AVG. If you want to pay, get Kaspersky or NOD32.

I've seen Norton trash too many systems as bad as any malware would. It's a resource hog and slows everything down, especially if you use the proxy. The problem with a lot of these suites is they try to do too many things and end up doing none of them well. Also, it can bea b---h to uninstall.

Best AV - Avira Antivir, NOD32, AVG, Panda.

Best Anti-spyware - Ad-Aware, SpyBot, Ewido, Spyware Doctor, SpySweeper, Pestpatrol - generally stay away from the rest, at least the $paid$ products.

And since somebody brought up the firewall, try Comodo and dump NIS altogether.
