I want to rip my DVDs to the computer only (not burn a copy) and am fine with using up to 4 GBs of space. Mac the Ripper gave me the bad sectors and handbrake compresses the files and resolution. I don't care what file extension it winds up being, being video TS, or anything else as long as its uncompressed, or at least close to the original (handbreak looked horrible in my opinion even at 80% target whatever it is). What is the best free software to do this? Thanks
Hi wje9122, I'm not a mac user myself but I've heard good things about ffmpegX. Here's the link. Also there's a walkthrough to rip movies from dvd to your computer here. Again, I am not a mac user and can only vouch for the fact that it works, not how well it works.
You should consider looking much more closely at Handbrake, and be sure to get the latest version, and to have the latest version of VLC Media Player installed on the same machine. Extremely high quality. Free. There is a learning curve to Handbrake.
FFMPEG will not copy a commercial DVD. VLC basically is only a player and streaming converter. Handbrake will rip very well into a MKv or MP4 format. Mac The Ripper 4 works great for me. Another rec, try RipIT!
