That's OK, you and Btitus had the same ideas as I did, so I at least knew I was working along the right lines! :D

Blast, I've been foiled! Tried to burn a couple of discs today (one an ISO and one full of avi's like last night) and they've failed!

Looks like a restore's the only option after all. :( Ah well, the system's been running a little slow of late anyway, so will probably be killing two birds with one stone!

Nope, it's no good, it's still failing to write. It'll do the whole flamin' disc, then it doesn't complete Disc-at-Once.

Tried changing it to Track-at-Once to see if that'll help, but it won't change on DVD. Could have sworn I wrote the last disc Track-at-Once, but I guess I must not have done...

Looks like I'll be contacting Sony Custome Support after all.

go to the store where you bought it from, say that it is faulty, if it is still under warranty they will test it for you, if their tests fails they will have to replace it (unless you have performed any form of warranty void)

Unfortunatly it's not that simple. I bought it from John Lewis, which is a big department store, and they don't have facilities to test computers. They'd have to send it away.

I bought my laptop from them a few years ago and it was faulty, so this is how I know what they do! Samsung managed to loose the laptop, so John Lewis had to replace it with a newer model, which I've had no problem with since. That would be about three years ago now. So, they wouldn't just replace the whole unit. Not that I wouldn't like to get my grubby little mits on the V3M!

The trouble is, the Vaio's a big ol' heavy beast and it's not like I can just wander up to the town centre with it, I have to drive to the nearest JL which is about 45 miles away... :(

I've contacted Sony, but I'm not holding out much hope of a response this side of New Year.

Well, anyway, thanks for all your advice, I'll let you know what happens. I won't be fiddling with it over Christmas, as I'm off to my Mum's today! Hope everyone who reads this thread has a great Christmas!

Thanks creaky, I'd appreciate that. Needless to say, I've heard nothing from Sony "Support" as yet. Have to give them the benefit of the doubt at the moment though, what with the season!

karimali8, if you check page 1 of the thread, everything's explained there. Just saves me having to rewrite everything! :D

    @Exinferis -

    - that should be ok, latest 6.x version is 6.6.0.18

    - i think this is your burner here (Medion OEM) - http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1918 in which case the firmware is up to date

    - sufficient total memory but you need to close more programs down prior to ALL burning/dvd work to free up sufficient free memory

    - 4468MB is burning too close to outer edge of discs. If you use DVD Shrink, set target size to 4300MB in Shrink's preferences thus avoiding outer edge and not sacrificing much space

    - erm i don't think they're much good at all, will have to check

    - loads of these messages, which are ok as this is a thing that Pioneer's do for some reason

    see other suggestions

    - the question marks are saying that the ATAPI drivers are not loaded correctly, fix via this - http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/FAQ.htm

    Hi Creaky,

Thanks for taking the time to check over my log, much appreciated.

OK, so, Nero's up to date; I've actually installed 6.6.0.18 since re-installing Windows, but get the same result as before.

Yes, that's the right one. I did come accross that site whist Googleing for Drivers or Firmware for the drive. Sony decided NOT to support this drive, dispite fitting it into most of their Vaio machines!

I know the media's a bit crappy, but they have worked very well for me in the past. I've used both the Mitsubishi and Fuji ones before and, although they don't play well on my stand alone Panasonic, they're great in my PS2, so I've stuck with using them for data backup and unimportant video files. So, I at least know that they do work! Also, I've got some TDK discs that are excellent quality, but they're not burning either. Don't want to coaster too many of them though as they're pricey!

I'm not using any software other than Nero as I'm mostly burning Mpeg movies and data to the disc. Is there some way of manually setting this in Nero?

Right, I will certainly give that a go when I get back home (at my Mum's still for New Year!).

As for the memory usage, I tried another burn after doing a complete system restore with only the original software installed and Nero, which also failed. I didn't get the log file from that, but if it fails again after trying to fix the ATAPI drivers I'll copy the log and post it again.

Hope you have a great New year!

OK, tried another burn after uninstalling and reinstalling the ATAPI drivers again. Worked OK first time, but burn failed again when I tried to burn another project!

I did nothing between burns except start a new project in Nero and add the files. I closed down all running programs as suggested before the first burn. The only thing I did differently in Nero was not have the program veryfiy the disc after burning, which I did on the first burn.

Sonic came bundled with the Vaio and was reinstalled when I did the restore. I've removed it, but was wondering if it might still be in the registry interfering with Nero?

Oh, and I got a reply from Sony "Support". Funny how I knew they'd be as much use as a lead ballon!:

Loads of use, thanks! *Rolls eyes* So, what they're saying is that, if you don't use the cr*p pre-installed software they supply, you're on your todd! I mean, if it's not burning with Nero, what are the chances of it burning with Sonic? Is it worth trying, I wonder? Am I really ging to be forced to stop using my favorite (not to mention the most recommended!) piece of burning software in favour of an inferior and less managable heap of pre-installed rubbish?

Answers on a postcard to Sony Customer Support, Europe! :D

P.S, hope everyone had a great New Year!

OK, well, since I've next to nothing on the system, I'm going to do a clean install of Windows again, only this time I'm NOT letting the Sony recovery disc install any programs! Hope that cleans things up.

As for the media, I just don't get it. I hear what you're saying, but I've personally had no problems with TDK; in fact they're the best for my needs, but that's just my opinion!

As for the Fujifilm and Mitsubishi discs, I just don't understand it; they were working perfectly fine before I moved, but after they just stoped! I mean, I know the Mitsubishi ones are cheap and crappy, but they worked! I just can't understand how something can work well enough one day and then not the next. I could perfectly understand if it's the drive that failed, but the media? Sorry, I'm just no buying that!

I'll see what happens after the clean install and post back later!
