Alright thanks again everyone. I've been dedicating too much time to this problem, since I don't want to feel like I wasted $700 on a computer I can't use. I'm waiting for my arctic 5/cpu cooler to ship.. then i'm going to install it according to the instructions. My last question for now is simply, if this doesn't work, what are my alternatives? What should I do? My motherboard, graphics card.. everything else is fine. My only problem is CPU heat. Could it be a problem with the CPU itself? I doubt it. If it doesn't work, should I buy a new power supply? Should I contact some kind of PC repair person? I won't have any idea what to do.
no,buy a heatsink and fan with more airflow so that it can take the abuse of gaming.store bought pcs are known for that, not the right cooling solutions
Hi Just a suggestion but are the fans on the back of the case mounted the right way round ie. blowing out and not sucking in air? I only suggest this as this is what i done, before my cpu was at48-50c and the system was running at 36c. Now that i have installed them right my cpu is 43c and the system 20c. All my system temperatures have dropped by quite a bit, hard drive, mobo etc. This is with a stock heatsink and fan. Its worth a check to see.
alright, it came (arctic silver 5), I'm going to try tomorrow to install it and hopefully it solves my cooling problems. if it doesn't solve my problems, what else can I do? what could be my problem? I can't think of anything. I know it has nothing to do with any of the other computer parts. Anyway, I'm only posting this now (before I try it) because I might not have the chance to get online tomorrow and it'd be cool to have some answers when I do.
what kind of heat sink and fan do you have on processor? stock will kool to a degree, even with artic silver.you will get a 5-10c increase in cooling[the cooling will go down,i mean]with a after market heatsink\fan you are looking at 10-20c but thats up to you. make sure you put a thin layer on processor and put on heatsink and wipe off.i put a thin layer on both[your not suppose to though] *****MAKE SURE YOU CLEAN OFF OLD PROCESSOR[DO NOT PRESS HARD]AND HEATSINK ON BOTTOM WITH RUBBING ALCOHOL AND A SOFT CLOTH[I USE A COTTON BALL AND I BLOW OFF WHREN IM DONE] ****MAKE SURE WHEN SPREADING ARTIC SILVER YOU DONT GET IT ALL OVER THE MOBO MAY SHORT IT OUT ALSO SPREAD WITH A TOOTHPICK SIDEWAYS OR A CARD,DO NOT PRESS HARD.CANNOT STRESS THAT ENOUGH. sorry about the caps,i wanted to make sure you red that...good luck...peace...if you have problems,i`ll check in tommarrow all day ok?its not that hard dont sweat it
Ok thanks for all the tips, now, are you sure I should put it on the heatsink and whipe it off? I only ask because I found the instructions online, and for that step in red it says "For Arctic Silver 1, 2 and 3:" and then finally at step 7 it says "For ALL Arctic Silver versions:" AND lastly, is there any really important reason why I should use 99% isopropyl alcohol? I only have 50% in the house, of course it wouldn't be too big of a deal to go out and get 99%, but it's just a question afterall.
you know what,i never really looked at a bottle of rubbing acohol before to see the potincy of the acohol before.i just looked at mine and it was 70 percent.never had any problems before with this new build or my old pc,or the one before that.dont know for sure.i always clean both and then let it sit to dry for about a half hour to make sure there are no deposits of anything on my stuff.to tell you the truth,i do the artic silver different, then the experts do it.i put a thin layer of stuff on the processor and the heatsink where they are going to come together.the problem why they say to wipe off,is to fill any imperfections in the metal under the heatsink, but this star ice heatsink wasnt only pitted alittle[not to the naked eye,but it wasnt a mirror finish underneath like most water cooling blocks]and it wasnt real flat either.so i put a thin layer on both the hs and cpu.i was reading one site and they were talking about wet sanding the bottum of the heat sink, couldnt be bothered.the only problem is,you might be taking a risk, if you dont make that nice and thin layer on both sides with no air bubbles,as the artic silver works in from a solid to liquid and back again[not quite a liquid more like goop] if it isnt spread perfect it will get tiny air bubbles between the hs and the cpu which will cause the temps to rise, but i never had that prob.its just like a volcano it fine but the if you look at the bubbles, when it is erupting, they are even hotter then the actual lava so the air bubbles kind of explode between the hs and cpu which causes it to be hotter.something like that happens, follow?well good luck man, when i first learned how,i was like you, knew nothing.give it a try, just watch your temps.get everest home by ly??? something or other.that will tell you all temps under comp, and then sencor.ok?good luck man....i hope everything turns out good for you...peace...you will be fine i can see that, your already researching right?
Hi Is there another name for rubbing alcohol, ive asked for it in the chemist but they never heard of it, is it similar to methylated spirits?
mine says that, then underneath that it says rubbing acohol.maybe its different in other countries, dont know, but ddp is right thats the name of it.i hope i didnt misslead you to use wrong stuff.....peace...just tring to help out....takes my mind off the wife[lol]
married 15 years[lol]shes not pleasent most of the time[lol]i have turn into the 3 monkeys hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil.thats me:deaf, dumb, blind, and mute[lol]keeps me out of the dog house.....if you dont know now,you will find out how fun it is to be married for so long.i think i married the devil[lol] hey, ddp, btw thanks for your help building this rig and i will never forget the trademark phase"teach and learn"with all kidding aside.i really appreciated all your help, thanks again bro
Thanks guys, but I really have nothing left to do. I wasted another 60 bucks for a new fan and some arctic silver, and I did it how the instructions said to. Not even a 1 degree temperaure drop. Conclusion - $800 down the drain.
Temperatures: Motherboard 36 °C (97 °F) CPU 53 °C (127 °F) Aux 34 °C (93 °F) Seagate ST3120026A 41 °C (106 °F) (from everest) And, note, the case is open and so is my window. it's cold out.
did you clean off the old stuff?what heatsink did you buy? i have the same processor only its a 939 pin: 28c mobo 29c cpu@2200 rpms 42c gpu what you are telling me cant be.did you plug in the fan to heatsink next to processor?
Yeah, I cleaned off the old stuff. Then, I put a small blob on the middle of my heatsink and rubbed it with my finger (through a plastic bag) and then whiped it off. Then, I put a small blob in the ceneter of the heat spreader like it said, and then put down the heatsink without lifting it again and clipped it on. Um.. by the way, i left it on bios for about 30 minutes while i went to have dinner, and i came back and the temp was saying 40 C still. But as soon as i go to windows it shows 54 C.. i don't know if that's normal or not. "what you are telling me cant be.did you plug in the fan to heatsink next to processor?" I'm kind of confused.. I plugged it into the thing that says "cpu_fan" on my motherboard.
you didnt do the artic silver right.you put a blob in center get a tooth pick, and spread it out like you were streeting concreate or take the two ends in both hands one in each and spread it by moving it from one side to the other.you get what im tring to say?you dont take a big blob spread it with you finger.that will leave all valleys and dips in you process.no wonder its not cooling.didnt you read that long thread i left you.you should have alot left to do again.if you dont then you use too much and it will never kool it.look at my temps they are real, not posted to try to fool anybody.i write to try an help dudes or babes like you so you can have the fun of fixing it yourself, but you didnt read and you put the thermal paste on wrong...sorry you are going to have to do it again you probably put so much air in the s--t by moving it around with your finger...oh and the plug should be right next to the cpu somewhere probably to the left of it.dont grab that toothpoich in both hands,do it with one.you get the picture on how smooth and thin it has to be.and i do the same to heatsink, but they say not to but mines running great and has been for a week now plus its overclocked which means more heat dosent matter my thermal paste app was perfect....peace bro...sorry about the hounding but i want you to understand how.in the meantime im going to try and look for a how too link for you
