@scoober14, If you believe that there is a possibility that your computer is infected with a virus, trojan or any kind of adware/malware, then try to do this. Go here, http://forum.iamnotageek.com/showthread.php?t=1819059447 - scroll down and first download "HiJackThis" and remember to download the "only suggested" programs mentioned, run them in order as told by the page. Or if you want to just run "HiJackThis", then just extract it and run it, then look for any names/software/program that you believe it is "not" one of yours (especially BHO), then "check" the name and have HiJackThis delete it. NOTE: you must be very careful of what you check to delete.
jerry ... my computer usage jumps around quite abit ... what is it supposed to be at ... i'll look into it and give you a number at what mine is at ... it's usually around 5 - 8 %, but jumps upwards of 30 plus even 70 when alot is going on. alkohol ... i just used hijackthis and all the ohter spyware programs on that list ... still having the same problem i also got mcafee virus scanner and did a new scan
Its OK if it jumps while doing something. If it was high at idle with just the desktop open then I would suspect something running in the background. Here is another good tool if you don't have it. Its called CWShredder which removes a good many trojans. http://www.intermute.com/products/cwshredder.html Jerry
k, jerry ... this is getting weird now ... when i'm burning a cd w/ my cd writer that's installed in my laptop, the buffer is jumping as well ... this worked perfectly fine, so now it's both of my drives that are jumping
are you using the same media? maybe the media you have is bad. try diffrent media. if that dosent fix the problem then you have downaloded somthing that is interfering with the burrning program and need to find out what it is.
The media is totally different and it worked before this whole problem started for a year plus ... one is a cd and the other is a dvd ... i'm stumped ... donm't know what elses to do
I JUST FORMATTED MY WHOLE HARD DRIVE ... REINSTALLED EVERYTHING AGAIN FROM TEH BEGINNING AND THE DAMN BUFFER IS STILL FUC$#FNG JUMPING SOOOOOO STRESSED OUT BY THIS
Have you updated your dvd writer's firmware to the latest version? How many RAM of Memory do you have? When you said; "just very painfully slow..." How slow/how long does it take to successfully completed a burn? Are you using the net, have any other programs/softwares running while burning? What are your computer specs?
thanks for the interest in helping guys. firmware is up to date 512 Ram Painfully slow takes anywhere from 2 - 4 hours depending how lucky i am, and this is when i close all the programs that i can. I have a pentium 4, 2.4 ghz laptop my hardrive is 40 gb and i defragged it not too long ago, but i also just formatted it yesterday
I just went back to the start of this thread looking to see if this had been asked before and I don't see it. Have you checked to see if your USB port is USB1 or USB2. If for some reason it is running on USB1 it will take forever to backup a dvd if it even works at all and probably will cause the buffer problem you have. Just another suggestion. Jerry
all of my ports on the computer are usb 2.0 ports hi-speed ... that's one of the first things i checked but i've never posted it before
Seriously, everything looks ok to me, and it shouldn't never take you 2 - 4 hours just to back up and have a successful burned. Especially, you've just reformatted your hard drive <-- this should be free of virus, trojans, etc. I think you have some DMA issues, perhaps, it has turned into PIO or Off instead of DMA is On/Available. Other than that, I'm as clueless as you are now at this point.
the last thing i can think of is this. whenever i check my dma's both of them are on ... but neither of them is for my external dvd-writer, one of them is for my hard drive and the other my laptop cd burner. now whenever i check where my dvd burner is it's under the Intel (R) 82801DB Ultra ATA Storage Controller - 24CB. now when i go to properties under that there is no advance settings tab for the DMA settings. this is all just very weird considering it worked fine 3 weeks ago
Here is another way you can check your DMA to see if it's On beside going to Hardware and Device Manager. If you have Nero Tool Kit, check to see the following: ** Open up "Nero ToolKit" ** click on "Nero Info Tool" (this will retrieve all drivers) ** then click on "Configuration" (this will show you all of your Drivers and its specifications) ** now check to make sure all of their DMA is on.
Hi guys, Not trying to barge in by any means but DMA only applies to IDE or SATA configured drives. DMA doesn't apply to external drives that are configured through USB or firewire.
There isn't too much left to try. Possibly defective ram or the drive itself. If possible, try the external drive on a friends computer and see how it works there. Jerry
