arctic silver 5 thermal paste, a nice little squeeze of it. i don't think it's too much, but i don't think it's too little, either. there's no substances that block heat that are coated on the heatsink or proc chip, are there? i wiped the copper contact of the hsf quite well with a damp rag, and i used a dry one (still quite well) on the chip. i was sure to spread the paste evenly and work the hsf around to eliminate air bubbles.
so, you've got no hsf recommendations for me, ddp? i'm not trying to be rude, but i think it's just an under-poweref fan on this cpu. i can't think of what else would make it so hot at minimal load. it's idling at 65 right now.
i'm thinking of this one here: http://www.thermaltake.com/coolers/itbu/cl-p0075/cl-p0075.htm how's that look, ddp? oh, and i pulled some processor details. http://www.amdcompare.com/us-en/desktop/details.aspx?opn=ADAFX55DAA5BN have a look...i seem to be running at the maximum temperature. think there's a way to speed up my stock fan from about 3000 rpm to maybe 5000? or even 4000?
go with that thermaltake fan. you need a fan control & sensor package bracket that fits into a 3.5" or 5.25" bay. can you get the specs on your stock fan? how many fans on/in your case total? when touching the stock heatsink, what does the temp feel??
i don't really care how loud it gets. if that fan can stay maxed out all the time, i don't need a control for it. any way to just keep it at max rpm? how can you set it to automatically keep stuff at a certain temperature? i have 2 intake and 2 exhaust fans on my compie, all 80mm. i don't know where to get the specs, but if you follow back up to my link in this thread on the processor, you'll find it was the retail package on the Clawhammer and should say something about the fan. it's a very, very quiet fan. i'm thinking of disabling "Cool 'N Quiet" in the bios and seeing if that helps. just noticed it earlier.
touching the copper/aluminum side of the heatsink and the heatpipes, it's not really that hot at all...i'm wondering why the heat isn't being transferred.
possibility the temp readout might not be reading true as have come across that problem with 1 cpu showing different temps on 2 different motherboards
well, it restarted under the strain of Doom 3, so i'm still thinking heat issue. any other way i can tell how hot it is?
but i also ran it with 100% cpu usage for over two hours with a stability test i found on pcworld.com. whatcha thinkin', ddp?
did you load the Cool'n'Quiet Software that came with the cpu? if no software check this link. gone for supper, back in an hr. http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/TechnicalResources/0,,30_182_871_9706,00.html
no software came with the cpu; the motherboard supported it already. i currently have it disable, yet my temps are still staying at 65C with the occasional blip to 66C.
what can be done about that, master? currently, i'm downloading the Sandra lite diagnostic/testing software...ever heard of it?
oh, and have you ever heard of a motherboard that can't run on 1 or 3 sticks of ram at a time? this thing's only been stable with 2 or 4 sticks...weird.
so, i should never try to run with anything but 2 or 4 sticks of ram? would you recommend Sandra? and was there anything to do about the temp readings? knowing if they're correct or not?
