I have a pacific digital external DVD writer 16x. When I first made backups of my DVD's I had little issues. Now I cannot burn anything. I continue to get burn failures. I have tried DVD decrypter and Nero to Burn with no luck. I contiue to get a full buffer and a coaster. Will someone advise? I also have checked to make sure that I have "DMA available".

DMA is not an issue on your external burner although you should have it enabled for all devices on your IDE busses.

Both Decrypter and Nero can report error messages. Nero can create a burn log. If you can post whatever error messages you are getting, that would help a bunch.

    You got this:

    Sense Key: 0x03 (KEY_MEDIUM_ERROR)
    Sense Code: 0x0C
    Sense Qual: 0x00

    Using these:

    Disc Manufacturer: TYG02 -

It would not surprise me if these are some of those fake Taiyo Yudens
Your error occurring at 89% is a typical bad media type error. Try some different discs. I use real Taiyo Yudens from http://www.mertiline.com or http://www.supermediastore.com

Here is another thread you may be interested in reading:
    http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/2/158854

Also, try a Google search for "Disc Manufacturer: TYG02" and you will see what I'm referring to.

    I use Verbatim -R 8X
I thought this was decent media?

They usually are, this is also the mfg code for Taiyo Yuden discs. I would still try some different media. The reason I say this is because of the error codes generated by Nero indicate a write failure, and the fact that everything was normal up to 88% of the burn. Regardless of what the brand of media is and it's reputation (good or bad). These symptoms tell me that someting is wrong with media. Bear in mind that I can't get it right all the time but I have seen more than a few of these specific error codes and am pretty sure thats what the problem is. I would just ask you try something else and see if it gets better. About the only other thing you could do is check for a firmware update or replace your burner. I just doubt if that is the problem though. If a failure occurs just as the burn starts because of burner problems you get a different error code.

I jsut bought some Taiyo Yuden 4x. Hopefully these will work. Do you think it has anything to do with the speed of my processor or memory. I have a Dell Latitude D600. It is a Pentium M 1.6G

It probably is the media just because of that specific error message you got. The log shows 511Mb of RAm and that you are using 56%. those are good numbers. You CPU should not be a problem as far as completing burns is concerned.

What kind of configuration do you have your drives set up as? Can you put an internal burner in? What I see from the log is that you have this installed in your computer:

    SAMSUNG CDRW/DVD SN-324S D: CDRom0

    And then your HDD:

    TOSHIBA MK4026GAX atapi Port 0 ID 0

Your Pacific Digital is actually this:

    Recorder: TOSHIBA CD/DVDW SD-R5372

I'm just wondering if it would be possible to install a different burner. Does your PC have empty drive bays?

I have a laptop so I can't install another burner unless I buy it from Dell. I did try to burn a TV show to video and I had no problem. It was a lot smaller than the DVD back up file. Why does this media work for the TV show but not the movie?

Bad media oftentimes works OK until you get out toward the edge. Also, all the blank discs may not be bad. Your TV show may have not taken the entire disc to burn or that particular disc was usable.

Alright, I bought a new burner (Sony 16x) and I tried different media although my Taiyo Yudens have not arrived yet and still the same thing. I cannot burn this movie. It is called Raising Helen. I am on disc number 9. I did start having issues when my operating system was upgraded to Win XP. Do you think that could be an issue?

Alright, I have noticed that the image burns well to my DVD RW's. But I can't continue to use those because they are so expensive. Why would it burn well with the RW's and now the -R's?

Well if you are still trying to use the original -R media that gave you the problem originally then it just verifies that changing media is fixing the problem.....maybe.

Can you post another burn log from your successful burn?

Are you still trying to burn with the Verbatims? You said disc #9. Have you attempted other movies with this Verbatim media? Any success? If you can burn other movies with the Verbatim media then you could try this:

Open the DVD-RW copy in Decrypter ISO Read Mode.

Make a copy of the copy using the ISO Write mode to a DVD-R.

Also it is a good idea to run this Nero Tool.

It will remove conflicting drivers and also contains a registry checker.

    You can get it here:
    http://ww2.nero.com/us/Driver_Clean_Tool_and_RegistryChecker.html

I did not see the option to save the log from the successful burn. Is there a way to find it after the burn is complete?

That shows a different media code so you must have used something different this time. Now you got an illegal disc error.

You need to dump Nero, use the Nero Clean tool to remove it completly, re-boot and download the new version.

Go here and read the directions, download and run the tool:
    http://nero.com/us/General_Clean_Tool.html

Then go here and download Update-package 1 and package-2:
    http://nero.com/us/nero-up.php

    Did you switch -R media?
How are you setting up this burn with Shrink? Do you have the "enable burning with Nero" box checked?

One more thing, you need to edit your Nero S/N out of the last burn log. it is the 1a22.... number

I do have the enable burning with Nero checked. I tried what you suggested and it worked. The buffer still appears 100% full but it burns the movie well.

Thanks for all your help. And thanks for the headsup on the media website. They had a lot of great buys.
