Hi...just out of curiosity, what was the drive issue you had mentioned? Was there a problem with the actual drive?

    Thanks...

mjb213: are you talking about my issues?

I just couldnt burn @4x with my A06.
Nero or any other software would just hang randomly while burning...But it burned @ 2x smooth. Tried like a beast to uninstall OS, tried of other CPU/chipset and everything you could imagine...

    Hi vpower..

yes...thanks...so is the drive burning 4x now with no trouble? If so, what did you do? I just got my A06 and I used a TDK +R 4x. Once DVDClone finished, the disk was completely blank. But I used a Verbatim -R to burn a photo/video slideshow with no trouble...go figure...I'm starting to pull out my hair..

    VPower,

I would like to second mjb213's question. Can you please let us know what you did to be able to burn at 4x?

    Was it a bad drive?
    Was it a FirmWare upgrade?
Did you change to another brand of 4x media (if so, which brand)?

    Thanks,

    Mayor

I would also like to Know. I can make good burns (4X) only with DVDXCOPY, if I use DVDXCOPY EXPRESS only my 106D can read the discs. I have upgraded both the Drivers and the Firmware. If it was a Firmware upgrade that you made, which version? I have been told that with a lot of these problems that it is the software, not a hardware problem, that a lot of these programs were written before 4X was available. An old rule of thumb, is, slower is better for good burns. I am using TDK 4X DVD+R as my Media.

Now, I have heard that using AnyDVD along with CloneDVD is the best way to go.

Suppossedly you use AnyDVD to remove any "unwanted" material (i.e. French Subtitles, or Special Director Interviews). This allows your DVD backup to reside on just 1 DVD.

You then use Clone DVD to do the actual burn, using the "instructions" for AnyDVD.

Has anyone else tried this - my buddy at work uses this method and he never makes a coaster, and his backups look fantastic.

Did you change to another brand of 4x media (if so, which brand)?

    I tried
    Verbatim -R 4x
    Memorex +R 4x
    Princo (generic) 4x

I finally return the drive...and got another one...wich work perfectly now.

    Hi vpower...

Is there any logic to this? I am able to make photo/video slideshows using -4x media...so I know the drive can burn at 4x...(I use ULead for this)but when doing movies, any media, either + or - that's 4x will not work...I have to bring it down to 2x...then it works perfectly. I'm using AnyDVD and CloneDVD. I've noticed that at the final stage of writing, when the buffers get flushed and the borders are written, the disk is immediately ejected using the 4x media. But with 2x, the process finalizes and the disk is completed successfully.

    Totally confused at this point.

    any ideas?

    Thanks...

return the 106 and get a 105 instead. Problems solved.

    Let me say again...

    Multi format blows.

My A06 burns @ 1x, 2x & 4x fine. Whether or not it plays on a stand-alone dvd player is a different question. I have a Panasonic RV31 and 50% of my discs burnt at 4x working, while the other half had blocky errors, as thought the disc was scratched heavily. 2x writing had a few errors on the 3 discs I burnt at that speed. I have decided to stick with 1x, as I have the patience for them to burn, and ensure compatibility with not only my dvd player, but with other peoples as well.

Could also have something to do with using Shintaro discs, but why pay for expensive faster burning discs, when cheaper slower discs end up with the same result.... but leave more money in your bank account.

    mjb213: try another software...like Nero.
There's plenty of ppl wich will say Nero s*cks.
But hey, I burn all my videos with that...and it's working without a problem.

Just bought an A06 yesterday,it is as good as my A05 ,except they took the headphone and volume control off of the the A06(never used it anyways), I won't miss it. So far the A06 has been great ,I haven't had any problems writing at 4X using Riteks 4X minus media,I don't plan on burning + media too much $$$ and compatiblity seems to be leaning towards the minus,Tosca why do you hate the A06? I'm getting great results with my A05 and my A06,and get this,my A06($155) cost less then my retail boxed A05($200)and this drive I bought about a month and a half ago. I can't wait for the 8X drives!

Is everyone really in that much of a hurry that an extra 15mins of burn time would kill us? I hope it doesn't get like CDRs, my old 8x Sony burner died the other day and the slowest drive I was able to buy was a 52x burner, I can burn a CD in just over a minute!!! I am not in that much of a hurry..

ps: the 106 will burn easily at 4x, just make sure that you don't have as some people do 4 or 5 different burning applications installed at the same time as it is possible that they can conflict and cause problems.

    People,

The problem isn't whether or not the 106 or the A06 are any good, they are. The problem is why DVDXCOPY AND DVDXCOPY EXPRESS won't burn at 4X. My problem isn't DVDXC it is DVDXCX, DVDXC burns fine on my 106D at 4X but DVDXCX only allows me to read the Disc on the 106D and nothing else. AND THIS PEOPLE IS A SOFTWARE PROBLEM, using NERO to make the burn helps but doesn't cure the problem. I don't know if other burners have the same problems as the Pioneers but I assume they do.

I agree with dodgeboy. I was able to make a burn at 4x with no trouble. But it was only a disk that was around an hour long...another movie, over 2 hours, didn't finalize properly. I'm curious if there's 'overburning' issues here since I can burn at 4x on any media that isn't over 2 hours long. The burner works great using 4x media in burning slideshows using ULead and also data backup. It seems these issues are software driven. I think it's just a matter of finding the right solution and sticking with it.

I posted this on another thread, so forgive the duplication, but it does answer the question regarding burning at 4X...

got my A06 about two weeks ago.

Been using DVDShrink and Nero 6.0 to burn.

Had some successes and some failures using Verbatim 2X disks. More successes than failures (image studdering) using TDK 2X disks.

These disks have been on-sale at my local retailer for about $2 a pop, so the coasters have been painful, but not too bad.

I bought a spindle of these (http://www.esbuy.com/4xpiobrdvdip.html) last week, being attracted to the Pioneer brand and 4X burning at $1.50 a disk).

Burned my first movie at 4X and watched it play flawlessly a few hours ago.

    I'm a happy guy...
