well i found this bit of info on another forum and it did the trick so hopefully it helps other people to.

This might be some help to all you guys out there which are having problems with this power calibration error. What I know is that the CD burning engine which comes with XP was developed by Adaptec (I might be wrong so please dont hold me to it). So here's what to do and most of your problems hopefully will be solved. This is the easiest way to tell everyone.

    1. on Desktop click Start
    2. select Control Panel
    3. click on Administrative Tools
    4. click on Services
    5. browse your way down to IMAPI CD BURNING COM SERVICE
    6. right click (on IMAPI) then select properties
    7. in the middle of the window, it will say start up type. Click on the arrow to the right and select disabled.
    8. make sure you click APPLY

Thats it folks. You should notice that Nero starts a lot faster as well.

Please leave any feedback here just to see if it worked for you or not.
    Hopefully it will. Thanks matt3678

Ah the dreaded 'Power Calibration Error'!
I had this same problem, tried the IMAPI fix, tried millions of different media, tried cleaning the lens on the writer - and the only fix turned out to be getting a new burner.
How long have you had your burner for?
Step one would be to try some good quality media, like Verbatim discs.
Second, check the power connections to your burner, make sure everything is in order.
If you have eliminated all the other steps, maybe think about a new burner...

Thats fine and dandy. good that you fixec but most of the time is just has to do with updating the firmware. Firmware issues are usually the culprit.

when ever i click install it just makes a random folder with the files i need to upgrade my firmware and a command prompt comes up and says "available target is not found"

i think i need to find the directory of my dvd drive or something but i have no idea. any help is appreciated.

or maybe i should make a new thread?
