Does the quality affect when you burn at 8X under 10 minutes compared to 4x at 15 minutes. will a 4X media burn at 8x under 10 min. or would still run at 4X since no 8x media is available yet.

If you put 4X media into an 8X burner, it will only burn at 4X. Unless the media was designed to be 8X and didn't pass quality control.

I can't speak for 8X DVD burning, but I can tell you that there were issues when the 4X burners came out; some players had issues with reading discs that were burned at 4X, and burning at 2X solved the problems.

This isn't new. For example, many CD players that aren't rated for CD-R playback will not play CD-R's burned faster than 8X.

Myself, I would only use 8X for burning data, not movies.

Thats not entirely true about 4x media in 8x drives. The Discs with G04 dyes were marked for speeds of 4x. However, Ritek have released that these discs will happily burn at 8x just as good...
