Hi all. I'm just posting to tell you of my success story with burning dvds. Scuba, Big Orange, and others were extremely helpful and I deeply appreciate it. I'm up to almost ten dvds now, and not a single problem. I just needed my good ol' Ritek +Rs I bought. You people rule!

Well I have good news...I went and returned that P.O.C burner that I had (Micro Advantage)and got me a MAD DOG 6 in 1. They were on sale at COMPUSA so it was only a $20.00 difference and I'm very please with it. I burned several movies already @ 4x and works great so it cut my time by 50% to 66% and still have the quality that I was looking for. Thank everyone that helped out and gave me suggestions. I'm here if anyone needs any help...

fawks, there is nothing wrong with shrink and decrypter, especially the new shrink 3.2! Too many people have great success with it, usually it's operator error, system, or media that causes problems.

One problem I know you have is your media, princo sucks! One of the worst! Terrible track record and causes ALL the problems you just described.

You can get "branded" Riteks G04 4x -R or Ridata 4x +R for under .50 each w/free shipping at Meritline, a very reputable company.

Give them a go and you'll see what I mean. :)

    xklante,
I did throw that Micro Advantage up against the wall. I had so many problems in the few days I had it that I removed it, packed it up, and returned it!!!! I bought a Plextor that Big O and Scubapete recommended. I paid alittle more but I had no problem backing up 3 dvds. I thouoght that DVDShrink was too sophisticated for that burner. ALSO, Roxio doesn't play well with others. I uninstalled it and removed it but still was unable to back up. My suggestion is to get rid of it and get a Plextor, Nec or LiteOn. It made my life so much easier. Good Luck and keep me posted.

    nailedny,

Well happy to hear that you did the same thing as I did. I'm very happy with the new one like you said a few extra bucks but let me tell you that it will pay for it self. On a different note I just tried to backup Scarface and it was "micro pausing" thru the entire movie. This was the second copy the first one did it and it also had the spanish subtitles on it. Since I only Shrink the movie because I was getting errors with DVD Shrink I couldn't take them off. I have send a few of my partners to this site...Because everyone so far has been great and helpful!!! Hope that this continues. Thank to all... See my new signature. Screw that Micro Advantage P.O.C

Hello to all. First time caller :) Love this thread. I'm a bit of a newby regarding burning software. As ScubaPete instructed here, I've downloaded DVD Decypter, however, the DVD Shrink seemed to be in a zip file and I can't seem to open it. It asks to "click the program I choose open it with". Every program I've tried says "Could not open DVDShrink file" Is there another route I can take to open and download DVD Shrink? I'm running Windows ME on a Dell Dimension 4300. Thanks in advance for any help.

    jockey747,

Could you please explain why you're not using a guide ?

If you wish to play with the settings without a clue as to what you're doing, you're truly lQQking for trouble in making a successful burn.

    Pete

    Fawks,
That's quite a leap - One burn with, I assume no guide, and the proggy isn't very good - WOW -

Did it occur to you that perhaps you didn't do everything correctly ?

To see if the answer may perhaps lie elsewhere besides the proggy, can you tell us what guide you're using ?

Playing a DVD isn't recommended by Sony. If you wish to go against the recommendations of the manufacturer you may wish to be a bit more careful about not using our recommendations - We've done this many times, if you wish not to use the guide that's right here in this thread then why are you complianing About the results ?

The problems you're experiencing make it look like it's 99% your media and perhaps your DVD target size.I assume you've read our recommendations, again, when we named your media as not being suitable for DVD backups, why did you use it ?)

Thousands upon thousands of pple are so impressed by DVD Shrink they'll use nothing else.

As my good friend bigorange already told you, your media is soo close to the bottom of the "Poor list" it needs a sump pump every time it rains -

    Pete

Just a note pple, with the exception of burners, this thread has a ton of information in it - I'm trying to understand why you have read this thread from the beginning before you posted and continue to ask the questions already covered. Could someone PLEASE clue me in ??? Don't tell me you just jumped to the end and started to post - How did you know this was the correct thread ?

I don't mind repeating myself but when your topic has already been covered in depth at times more than once, why, OHhh, why are you just trying to cause yourselves problems ?

    Come-on guys . . . .

    jockey747,

Your question has nothing to do with the thread topic. If you have an off topic question then feel free to start a new thread :)

Tag to the last item regarding removing encryption...

I live in Region 2 but often visit. TRaveling with my 18 month old I have to keep a set of kids DVDs handy. I need to copy them for backup and so I can play the DVD for Andreas wherever we are using a normal DVD connected only to a TV.

I have been using DVDFab with CSS Region Free to a copy Region 2 DVD so it will play on a Region 1 dvd. I have tried 4 times now and each time I get the error on the DVD player "prohibited due to areas use restrictions"...

Can someone help me as I am desparate to copy my Region 1 kids dvds so that my son can watch them on the TV and I can continue to work on my Region 2 laptop. :)

    Hi Paul, welcome to aD,

No problem Mate, let's not even think abour regions. Go to the guide on the first page of this thread and use that guide for backingup your DVD's. When you rip with DVD Shrink the disc that comes out the back is REGION FREE - Now is that kweel or not ???

Right - then, in a bind, you can try using AnyDVD in the background to make all discs region free also. Yep if you don't want to use the free one (DVD Shrink) you can use thje Pay ($$$$) one (AnyDVD).

Just a note - as I use AnyDVD, you may well like it - a full version is available for a 21-day free trial, give it a shot, perhaps like me. you'll like it enough to purchase it -

    http://www.slysoft.com/en/anydvd.html

Enjoy there my friend - your problem is solved :)

Remember to stop back and give us a report, we all would like to know how Andreas like his DVD's

    Cheers,

    Pete

    Pete,

    Thanks for the response.

I followed your advice to the letter - I even used a Verbatum dvd-r and not a cheapo. Still got the same error.

The only thing that I can think of is that the DVD or the player is using what I have read to be an "enhanced Region" system or something like that such that making it region free is not working (?) Is there some way to set the dvd copy so that it is "set" to region 1?

Is there a way for me to know what region code is in this dvd or why it will not copy? The dvd was purchased in Spain. The original does not run on my US dvd player. When I try to play the original, I get the same error: "Playback prohibited by area limitations"

This is getting soooooo frustrating (not your fault of course). Can you help further?

    Paul

    Hi Arrow54,

I'm sorry, I just found you, somehow you got lost in the shuffle -

Yes my friend, it is in a zip file.

"Google" (meaning to run a search through the Internet) for "WinZip", "PKunzip" OR WinRar and download that proggy. Use this proggy to "Unpack" or "Un-zip" DVD Shrink. You'll see a button that says something like "Extract to" and make a folder that you can find to extract the file too.Reading about the program (proggy) you're using to "Un-Zip" DVD Shrink will help you to extract other proggys and files in the future.

    Good luck,

    Pete

    Fawks,

Way to go there "Dude" !

Do you see how easy it really is when you don't make trouble for yourself ?

Burn on my friend, Burn on . . .

Hi there Rockyn, welcome to aD,

I sure hope you made a mistake about your HD space being 600MB. We need 8 to 10 GB FREE.

Let's try and get this sraightened out shall we ?

I just did that DVD 2 days ago becouse so many pple were having so much trouble with it. I had no problem at all. I used DVD Decrypter (with AnyDVD) running in the background to rip it then DVDShrink to process it then DVD Decrypter to burn. I also used DVD Shrink to rip and process and again DVD Decrypter to burn with zero problems. Me thinks there is a bad pressing around. Use DVD Decrypter AND these extra settings to rip that "puppy" -

Try the following: a guide for ripping problem DVD's:

    Here's a few Helpful Hints:

For starters you can do the following:

    1. Thoroughly clean the disc you are about to copy with alcohol and a soft cloth.

    2. Begin playing your DVD on your PC's Power DVD or other player. Play for about 2 OR 3 minutes then start your ripping program. Continue to play the DVD until the ripping begins - then turn your player off.

Should you have problems with DVD Shrink, try ripping with DVD Decrypter. We're going to rip this "Puppy" in the "file" mode. You can also adjust Decrypter under Tools, settings, File, to remove PUO's - this works on some nasty discs.

DVD Decrypter can handle even the toughest of encryptions - Don't ever give up on DVD Decrypter, try the following little "adjustments" -

Step 1. In DVD Decrypter, go to "Tools", "Settings", and then whatever you're using either the File Mode tab OR the ISO Read Mode tab and "tick" "Remove PUO's" - try either the IFO, BUP, PUO's OR the VOB PUO's

Step 2. In DVD Decrypter, go to "Tools", "Settings", General tab, on the bottom left it will say "Removal Method" choose "Aggressive".

Step 3. in DVD Decrypter, go to "Tools", "Settings" then choose the CSS tab, under CSS Cracking Method, mark the spot that says "Brute Force -> I/O Exchange".

These "adjustments to DVD Decrypter should "Crack" just about anything out there today EXCEPT maybe the ARccOS copy protection. I haven't tried it on that yet :)

Lastly, you can try ripping with SmartRipper.

    http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_rippers/smartripper.cfm

Sometimes it just needs a different crack-smith :p)

    Cheers,

    Pete

    Hi,
I've been reading alot here & am impressed with the suggestions & help. There's some smart & experienced people here & I'm looking forward to doing more & offering help & tips as I go. So I was really interested when I recently saw the guides for copying & burning with DVD Shrink & DVD Decrypter since I have been having trouble with that. I had been using Roxio for simple DVD burning & it wasn't broke but I tried to fix it because I want to move on to more specialized video processing with more software. So I removed Roxio, all the way. Changed from XP home to XP Pro & didn't change any hardware so I know the drives are okay. Now I can't burn DVDs. Here's where I fall off the path using the DVD Shrink/DVD Decrypter method :
When I'm in DVD Shrink & go under "Target Device" & go to "Select backup target" my options are create "ISO Image file" or create "Hard Disk Folder". There is no "ISO Image File and burn with DVD Decrypter". There's no mention of DVD Decrypter at all & I've tried this with DVD Decrypter open & closed. When DVD Shrink gets done storing on the hard drive it stops & doesn't go on to burn. Did I use the wrong hand on the mouse?
    Thanks,
