Hi guys, sounds like you're having a few hickups, - it happens -

    nailedny,

When you clicked "Backup", you won't see your burner there - I have 2 burners, then and only then do I see anything and that's when I have to choose which burner for DVD Shrink (DVD Decrypter) to use.

I've written a few guides but here is part of one dealing with what you should do AFTER you click on "Backup".

    You've just clicked "Backup" -
Now, take just a second and under "Target Device" go to "Select backup target" once there, select "ISO Image File and burn with DVD Decrypter" Finally, where it says "Select target image file", browse till you find your created folder for your backup and click "Save". Now, under "Quality Settings, "tick" "Compress video with high quality adaptive error compensation" there you may adjust quality enhancements. Practicing with the settings can produce even better end products. For a no-frills DVD's like "There's something about Mary" I like Extra Smooth BUT for DVD's with a lot of special effects, I use the Extra Sharp setting. That's for me, you'll have to decide what you like :) If all the boxes are "grayed out" that's OK, it means your DVD is small enough that little will be lost from the original. That's it ! Click "OK" and DVD Shrink burns that ISO image to your HD. It then opens DVD Decrypter and has it burn the ISO image to your waiting blank DVD.
Don't use your PC for anything at all while it's working. -

I'M NOT KIDDING ! STAND BACK FROM THE COMPUTER !

Follow the directions, you should be fine -

HINT: I recommend that you print out my guide so that you can follow it steo by step - use a pencil and check off each step, you'll be fine :) Missing a single step can mess ya up a bit - :(

    Hi there cdaug66,

Sounds like you've got a bit of a doggy disc :(

No worries, let's rip this "Puppy" with DVD Decrypter :)

For starters you can do the following:

    1. Thoroughly clean the disc you are about to copy with alcohol and a soft cloth.

Should you have problems with DVD Shrink, try ripping with DVD Decrypter. We're going to rip this "Puppy" in the "File" mode. You can also adjust Decrypter under Tools, settings, File, to remove PUO's - this works on some nasty discs.

Lastly, you can rip with SmartRipper.

    http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_rippers/smartripper.cfm

If your files are in a VIDEO_TS folder just capture them using DVD Shrink's "Open Files" and off you go :)

IF your files are just in a "Lump", and you see VTS, VOB's IFO and BUP's files DO NOT WORRY, we're not in trouble AND we're almost there - Now I want you create a folder and we're going to name that folder "VIDEO_TS" written exactly like that, all in CAPS. Now that we've made that folder, we're going to gather all the loose files and place them into that VIDEO_TS folder. Once that's accomplished we can have our DVD Shrink grab them by using "Open files" - that should cover all of your bases -

    I hope that helps,

    Cheers,

    Pete

I've deleated Roxio and now my burner won't even open. Boy this has been a long night. I just deleated shrink and I am going to reinstall it hoping it will find my burner. Any other suggestions??
I have printed your instruction along with bigoranges.
    Help?!!!
Remember, I can't even get to back up, I get a message after I hit open in shrink "the sector is encrypted."

nailedny, roxio is still probably in your PC, there is a tool just for removing the remnants, Pete knows it. I'll have to look it up and get back to ya.

OK, found it, Find it here:

In the future stay away from Roxio, my opinion, it's not gospel but i think most would agree.;)

nailedny, sometimes if shrink can't rip it you will have to use decrypter, rip to the HD and open files in shrink instead of open disc, then browse to those files you ripped with decrypter.

Also, slower reads will sometimes get by the problem using your burner to read instead of your DVD ROM drive.(i know i know it shortens the life of the burner? not if you just do it every once in a while)

Another option is to run Anydvd in the background while ripping with shrink. There is a beta version 4.0.3.2 out right now you can DL for free at the homepage of Anydvd. It has some new settings that are pretty good. You don't have to operate it, it just runs on it's own by it's little self. It will also enable you to use many other apps that don't have ripping capabilities.

I'm a noob to burning dvd's. Anyway i have a question for ScubaPete or anyone else who can help me. I just installed Nero StartSmart and AnyDVD on my pc. My problem is that I'm burning the movies correctly but i cant figure out how to burn it to a blank dvd. I was hoping that after it finished burning the movies that it would ask me to insert a blank disc. I know it might be a stupid question but i don't have alot of expeirence. After burning, i'm able to watch it through the pc but i just want to know how to burn it to a blank.

    Thank you for any help.

    rs2003, welcome to aD :)

You must be using Nero recode since you're in nero startsmart, you are actually sending your movie to the hard drive instead of your burner. You just need to select your target destination to your burner next time. Recode and Anydvd are a good combo.

Since you've already let recode do it's work there is no need to start over for this movie. Open Nero Express. Then open a seperate window where your movie files folder on your hard drive are.

Click and drag your ENTIRE movie folder to the VIDEO_TS folder in express. Ignore the AUDIO_TS folder. Express will auto pick the files it needs from the movie folder.

Then hit next and pick your burner for the target destination in express. Hit burn and wait 10-15 minutes. Done.

For the next time you use Recode, here is a little quickie guide that also includes editing and changing compression for extras. Hope it helps a little:

I'm going to give you one of the easiest methods of burning there is. If you have you have Nero Ultra 6, you are going to use recode 2. All you need is a ripper like dvd43, anydvd, or dvd region free. Any of these will run in the background and enable you to go into recode directly without using any other program. You install 1 of these, dvd43 is free, anydvd and dvdregion free costs 39.00 but they have a 20-30 day free trial. I would try anydvd, but the choice is up to you. DVD43 is not free if you use the standalone version, so to get the free one you have to install patin couffin, I would just use the 30 day anydvd trial. Once installed there is nothing to do with these programs, they do their work without you ever knowing they are there.I promise you this will work. I'm going to give you step by step instructions.
    1-open Nero startsmart

    2-open recode

3-click on copy entire dvd to dvd, then click dvd-files

4-click on import dvd, when window pops up choose your drive with the movie title

5- wait 1-2 min. for nero to analyze

6-you will now have a screen divided up into 3 categories, menu, main movie, extras, sometimes there might be a 4th called unreferenced material.

7-if you wish to re-author/edit, that is take anything out to reduce compression to improve pic quality, here is where you do it, click on extras, then click on the + mark. Leave menu and main movie alone,(I repeat, leave these 2 ALONE)

7a- The one exception to leaving the movie alone is if there are 2 versions, full and widescreen. I would then disable the one of your choice and leave the other one alone.

8-click on each title in extras and preview it with your slider in the preview window, you can then disable each one upon which nero will ask you to substitute a still image, say yes. Or you can raise compression on each title thereby lowering compression on the movie, if you want to keep that special feature. You can eliminate all extras by disabling them all at once and not hitting the + mark, same goes for compression, you can raise all compression on extras at once, thus raising quality of movie by lowering it's compression.

8a-when you are done click next, and choose a temporary destination folder for nero to work out of. I would create a folder and place it where you can find it if need be.

9-check advanced analysis AND burn at once AND high quality mode, especially for large amounts of compression. I only use high quality mode for compression amts. of over 10%, the choice is up to you.

10-choose your burner as it's destination

11-click burn and wait 45 minutes to 1-1/2 hrs., depending on what quality settings you used. Have a drink or two, do NOT do anything else on your PC, I mean NOTHING!

12-please play your movie and enjoy.

This method is called "on the fly", it goes directly from your dvd-rom drive to the disc you are burning on, it is the most simple means for burning you can get, recode does an excellent job, btw, and you're only using one program.

You can also rip your files with Decrypter to your hard drive then after opening recode browse to that ripped folder and use it as the source instead of your DVD ROM drive with the movie in it.

Can I reduce this time somehow? I am running on P-III-550 Mhz, 192 MB RAM.
It takes time in Deep Analysis then takes hours doing Encoding. I mean if I am putting a dvd which is not encrypted,is there a way I camn just do the shrinking part to save time.

    BIGORANGE AND SCUBAPETE,
I started with petes new directions above, last night. I cleaned the dvd with alcohol and presto...I could use shrink. I left it alone but have my computer on to go to sleep after 5 minutes so I did, shake the mouse from time to time to check the status. Anyway, everything went well, I saved it to my folder like you said and use decrypter to burn it to the CHEAP DVD+R (Imation). I saw it go to decrypter and then I went to bed to wake this am and find it burned successfully. YIPPI. NO.... I tryed to play it in my rom and it told me to put in a cd. It wouldn't recongize the dvd. Soooooooo I broght it down to my laptop and tried that. It read it but played in slow motion. I couldn't fast forward to the movie. I just tried it in my dvd player and it just continues to say loading. What now? Could it really be the cheap dvd? I am up to my 3rd coaster. I am going for a set. Did touching the mouse have something to do with it???? I know I was suppose to leave it alone but...I will change the setting on the monitor, I promise. A friend of mine uses cheap dvds but not with shrink and decrypter. She uses sofeware and just copies to her burner. I will order good dvds, I saw the list. BUT in the mean time can I try it with another brand I can buy at a local store? And is my copy in the folder ok?

I am now backing up another dvd but not burning it. I did it in shrink and just saved it to my folder. I tried to play the other one that is in my foler but not sure how. It opens in decrypter when I double click on it. I tried to open it in dvd but nothing happened? Can I play it?

    nailedny,

guarantee it's your media. Get Ritek G04 from Meritline, great prices(.40-.47 ea. w/free shipping), very good company. You'll get 'em in 3 days or so. In the meantime? WalMart sells Verbatim pretty cheap, another excellent brand. I bought a pack of 5, they look like old timey reels, for 10 or 12.00 I think. Also, buy a couple of RW's to work with to save on coasters, tho the media you have is already coaster material. lol ;)

You should be able to play it, what software player do you have, also what standalone player do you have?

    LOL,BTW,no, touching your mouse didn't cause a problem. ;>)

    RS2003, your quite welcome. :)

i am now using rw media. Do I need to change anything in decrypter? Un check burn-proof????? Whatever that means. When I first started it wanted to format, then said ok then an error which read:
    I/O Error
    Device[1:1:0]DVDRW IDE 10080055 (E:)(ATA)
    Scsi Status 0x02
    Interpretation Write (10)sectors 352-383
    Sense Area:
    Write Error
What the heck??? I hit retry and again another message like above but the sectors changed to 704-735.
    What now??

ok, I must sound like a real idiot but I am a woman possesed!!! After 40 minutes and 0% complete I hit cancel. Got alittle impatient and a message came up "Be patient, I heard you the first time." I am even getting yelled at by my computer. lol
I have read this forum from page 1-7 (page 7 is mostly my posts) and the I/O error is due to cheap media?? I bought sony rw. I finally get shrink to work and save to my HD, open decrypter and now having all sorts of problems. When I backed up last night from shrink to decrypter everything was fine just couldn't play the movie, I thought it was the media. Today I buy what I think is good media and .....errors.I cleaned the dvd with alcohol before inserting it too. Anybody??
