Hi, I read the tutorial by Alkohol at http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/422740 Good article, he left out a few details but I think most will be able to figure it out. It took about 6 hrs to get the files on, but I think it's right finally. My problem is when it gets to the end, after I have the .iso file saved on my hard drive I can't write in Image Burn or DVD Decryptor. The green arrow is grayed out. Says device not ready. I have tried reloading, refresh, and update firmware. No Luck. It says I have a GENERIC DVD RW 8XMax which is the same thing my device manager says. Any suggestions??
Things have changed drastically since the 8X burner days, might be time to upgrade to a new brand name burner. Also 6 hours is a bit extreme, sounds like something is drastically wrong.
I should agree, but I haven't burned DVDs for about a year now because I started getting multiple errors reading sectors and stuff. I've used xcopy and xcopy platinum, DVD clone III, AnyDVD and DVD Shrink,(used alone). I paid for Clone and anyDVD, plus when I started getting errors with xcopy I bought a new burner cause my old 4x didnt seem to work. So I dont want to throw any more money at this til I'm sure what's wrong. I agree with the time issue too. Using the above link tutorial it took DVD decrypter 1 hour to rip using Ripit4me, then 5 minutes for VTS, then 1.5 hours to transcode with Shrink. Saving it to the hard drive with shrink took 1.5 hours to analyze and 4 plus hours to encode. Remember I was using the tutorial and he suggested using deep analysis and high quality compression for maxixmum results, so I figured that was the time issue.
Funny how no one can build a program that actually works. If I only had the time to become a programmer :-( . So I tried to rip another DVD today and now I get an error that my DVD burner is not set to the right region. Funny how it worked last night huh? So I click fix region and it freezes. Then if I click on another window and bring it to the front, DVD Decrypt pops up in about 4 secs and takes over my screen again. Closing it in task manager doesn't work so I have to do a hard reboot.
Possible PICNIC situation (Problem In Chair Not In Computer). I have burnt well over a thousand DVD using a PIII-800 system with 256mb RAM using a Pioneer 106D burner without any problems. Programs used are DVD Shrink, DVD Decrypter and AnyDVD (have previously used DVD43). There is nothing wrong with the software listed above (although Shrink and Decrypter are no longer updated). Used in conjunction with AnyDVD they work perfectly. You cannot blame the software if you do not know how to use it. Thousands of people use current ripping and burning software without any problems. If the problem does not lie in the interface between the chair and the keyboard, then I would suggest that you need to check your system for spyware, packet writing software, file structure and defragmentation status
Yea me too. Well maybe not 1000's but 100's. And I've also spent hundreds of hours and hundreds of dollars trying to figure out why it burns one minute and not the next. NOTHING, except going to this forum and ripping the DVD changed since last night. I did not download any new programs or open email. If every one didn't have problems then there would be no need for this forum would there? I didn't say there was a problem with my pIII, someone just asked me for my specs. But since you mentioned it, let's talk software. As in one of the replies from a senior member "update your burner, there have been changes. I burned hundreds of dvd's till they changed the crypting about a year ago when I started getting errors. So I upgraded my software recently. Now the software decrypts but wont burn. Why would a programmer not make his updated software compatible with hardware the old software was using just fine? Just doesn't make sense to me. Don't get me wrong, I'm not griping just wondering? The squeaky wheel gets the grease right? If the programmers never hear the negative they'll never be able to make it a positive. Sorry I said anything about the software. Just want to get back to getting some ideas on how to fix it or why it is happening.
I can appreciate your frustrations (and those of others)that have problems in ripping/burning. Listed below is my recipe for successful DVD burning - Have burnt over 1000 without any burning or playback problems. This has been posted previously but the essentials are the same. People are free to accept or reject this advice - it is not prescriptive, merely advisory and has worked very well for me. 1. Do not use labels on burnt media. 2. Keep your hard drive defragmented. 3. Ensure you have plenty of free hard disk space. 4. Ensure you do not have sypware/virus on your system. 5. Keep you start up menu lean and clean. 6. Use a program such as HijackThis to ensure your start up log is lean and clean. 7. Avoid conflicting programs on your system e.g., Nero/Roxio do not play well together - choose one only. 8. Avoid the use of packet writing software e.g, INCD, Direct CD. 9. Avoid multi-tasking when ripping/encoding/burning. 10. Do not install problematic programs such as Interactual Movie Player and remove from system if installed. 11. Do not burn too fast (max 4x recommended). 12. Ensure definitions for virus and spyware programs are up to date. 13. Avoid burning unnecessary extras - do movie only in reauthor mode if using DVD Shrink <http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_rippers/dvd_shrink.cfm>. 14. Use brand name, quality players for burning - e.g., Plextor, Pioneer, Lite-On etc. 15. Use an el cheapo Asian/Chinese standalone for playback - they are much more versatile and reliable than name brands and normally handle both PAL and NTSC formats. 16. Use quality DVD media - Ritek, Verbatim, TY's recommended. 17. Reduce target size of burnt DVD to approx 4400 if using DVD Shrink. 18. Store safely and keep away from children. 19. Be very wary of downloaded movies - in most cases they are not worth the time or effort to reproduce. 20. Ensure that DMA mode is enabled in your system settings. 21. Load and skip through chapters on computer DVD player (e.g, Power DVD, WinDVD) prior to burning. My System Specs (don't laugh) PIII - 800 - 256Mb Ram Programs used: DVD Shrink (98%), DVD Decrypter (approx 2%), AnyDVD, Nero (almost 100%) for burning. Success rate: 99.99% plus. Burner: Pioneer 106D ROM: JLMS - Lite-On Rip/Encode time: Between 10 and 50 minutes (depending on movie) - normally under 30 minutes. Burn Time: Between 12 and 15 minutes.
@dvdcraz I take it that you're talking about ImgBurn (burning the ISO image) process right? If so, did you click MODE, WRITE once ImgBurn is launched? Plus you'll need to insert a blank media into your drive in order to continue to Write (Burn). That was stated clearly on the guide. 6 hrs is a bit too long, 1 hr for RipIt4Me (DVD Decrypter) to rip is too long. Sounds like you're having DMA issue to me. The guide was "fully" designed for "newbies" or those that are interested with RipIt4Me + DVD Shrink + ImgBurn. The longest I've ever encountered RipIt4Me (including DVD Decrypter + FixVTS) to successfully ripped a DVD is 27 minutes. Usually it's around 20 - 25 minutes, including DVD Decrypter + FixVTS. DVD Shrink is a little slow when using "DA + AEC + Max Smooth," but you'll enjoy the final result better; meaning quality is better, especially if you're the few who owned any 45" or higher HDTV, LCD, Plasma, etc. However, the guide's main goal is for FREE tools, thus I'm using DVD Shrink. I can have Nero Recode substitute DVD Shrink any time and have it done within 25 - 45 minutes of transcoding using "AA + HQSR + Assign Best Quality to Main Movie." Recode is 2 times faster than DVD Shrink. To make a long story short; using my old 2.66GHz P4 * 15 - 25 minutes of ripping + processing with FixVTS or VobBlanker * 25 - 45 minutes of transcoding with Nero Recode (depends on movie) * 8 minutes of burning Short cut: 15 + 25 + 8 = 48 minutes and I'll have a perfect backup Long version: 25 + 45 + 8 = 78 minutes and I'll have perfect backup Best of luck!!
Thanks for the help. I dont know to much about DMA but I keep hearing about it. My older computer, the one I use for email and online stuffand for burning was just to full of junk I think. Don't think there was enough room and system resources, plus I may have a spyware program or two on it, been a while since I scanned. But I cant defrag my hard drive. Some kind of problem with Windows, and I got way too much stuff on it to risk reinstalling over the current. Did that a few years back and lost all. I put the programs on my busines computer and burned about 6 or 7 DVD's with no problem. Still even with the new computer it takes about 3 or so hours to encode to an ISO file on the hard drive then burn it to a DVD. I burn at 4 x with 8x ritek DVD's and a 16x dual layer sony burner. Ripit4me crashed today while ripping Nip/Tuck, but I was away and not paying attention. When I restarted it ask me to post to a forum and was susposed to redirect me to it but it never came up. So far I've been happy. Ripping to the hard drive first seems to work better then copying from DVD to DVD.
Next time I burn a dvd on my new system I'll time it for you Alkohol. Maybe you can give me some tips to speed it up!! Thanks again
