This is quite nutty. I checked memory before burning. Task Manager was around 220MBs of usage out of 500MBs. Does Nero use that much Memory? I notice that the read buffer and the bottom of the screen is constantly at 93-98% in use. Is that normal? I just do not have anything running. Everything else running is owned by system.
There also seemed to be a Media error.

Disc Manufacturer ID: CMC MAG, Media Type I read that TDK was very reliable. I guess not? Your guide suggests Verbatim or DataLife.

What do you think caused this to fail, memory usage or media? I just can't understand the huge memory usage.

Tried again with task manager on. Memory never got above 326MB in use out of 500MB so I don't know where this memory reading is coming from. The recorder buffer is always around 93-98%. Is this what the memory is reading? The burner has a 2MB buffer. I have around 9GBs free on the C: drive.

This time I raised the Ultrabuffer to 80MB from 70MBs.

    Should I worry about this?

    I see from another thread:

Here's an example of some TDK. the name in brackets is the MID, and those CMC Mag are some of the most foul, atrocious, useless utter rubbish dvd media money can buy - hopefully your's aren't CMC. The reason i won't use TDK is it's in effect a lottery as one day you might get a decent pack of discs, another day you might pick up an identical pack and they'd be made by CMC Magnetics

Do you see the InCD stuff in my version of Nero? It came pre-installed.

pingu8 - no one is trying to discredit you, but our rules clearly state NO CAPS. read rule #9 - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/2487
if you are simply to lazy to hit 1 button on your keyboard then i seriously doubt you'll have the energy to folow anyones instructions for any help you might receive here. do us all a favor and just hit the damn caps lock key before you type next time.

    @darthnip - cheers

@pingu8 - pls supply LAST section of your logfile which lives in c:\program files\ahead\nero\nerohistory.log, but DO NOT post your serial number which usually begins with '1A21' or similar..

@dullboy - sorry, playing catch up on your replies to this thread..
    - i recognise that first paragraph - wise words indeed LOL. as to InCD - it's not installed according to a glance at your logfile.. will now go thru the last log you posted...

    - i take it your PC is a Gateway ?, as according to this link - http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1911 GA04 firmware is indicative of a Gateway OEM version of the TS-552B drive. not sure if GA04 is the latest revision of Gateway OEM firmware..

    - yup, you need to close down more programs to free up more memory because out of a (sufficient) 512MB you should have more free memory than 110MB

    - cheers for that quote you found further up the page, i'll reuse part of it here. "CMC Mag are some of the most foul, atrocious, useless utter rubbish dvd media money can buy - hopefully your's aren't CMC. The reason i won't use TDK is it's in effect a lottery as one day you might get a decent pack of discs, another day you might pick up an identical pack and they'd be made by CMC Magnetics"

    - try decent media
pingu8 - no one is trying to discredit you, but our rules clearly state NO CAPS. read rule #9 -

DARTHNIP i guess you just broken the rule.....oooooohhhhhhhhh...............WHATEVER!
if you are simply to lazy to hit 1 button on your keyboard then i seriously doubt you'll have the energy to folow anyones instructions for any help you might receive here.

you don't know me so please don't get too personal with your comments.... it's not really called for. i'm glad that not everyone is as petty minded as you in this forum.

    @pingu8 -

    - firmware's up to date

    - that question maek is ok as it looks like the burner is external to the PC

    - wow where's all the free memory gone - you're gonna have to close down more programs prior to ALL dvd work/burning

    - oh dear - something isn't being done correctly at the encoding stage

    - nice media

    - sorry i'm sure this has a real meaning - i just think it's a classic, funny error

    - splat!. free up more memory and investigate what you're doing wrong at the encoding stage.. then use 'simulation burns' to further test without wasting blank discs. when you go to hit 'burn', untick burn and tick 'simulation'. Nero will go thru the motions with a blank disc and generate a log entry

petty minded? you're the one too lazy to hit a lousy button and follow a simple rule and i'm petty minded? yeah, whatever lets you sleep at night pancakes. well listen here sweetcheeks, you will follow our rules or you'll be removed from the forum. that clear enough for you there bubbles? perhaps I am petty minded, hell i could be a feeble minded old one legged bastard that drools and wears diapers, but that still has absolutley nothing to do with the rules of this site.

darthnip, apologies. been told by few people i was in the wrong & i'm one who can admit to being wrong. if i offended u pls accept my apologies. i know i should have read the rules & to take offence to constructive pointers by forum members was bad judgement on my behalf. you can still remove me should you wish.... i'll understand.

    thanks.

yeah no problem, at least you can admit when you were in the wrong, which is much more than most people do. it's nice to see someone that actually wants to stick around a while. welcome aboard.

@pingu8 - i can't see anything wrong there at all.. not sure what to suggest other than to try one of those kits that cleans the lasers, or maybe try mounting the burner internally as a test and see if you can get more joy that way...

creaky, thanks for looking at it so quickly.

so you have no idea what causes "unspecified target error" message? already cleaned the dvd drive. yesterday while stimulating it kept freezing & i couldn't turn off the pc the conventional way, ie shutting down via task manager, i had to pull the plug.

i don't know what else to do but buy a new laptop with high speed usb 2.0. am sure this laptop has usb 1.1.

if you cant find the problem what are my chances of someone else seeing it?

   (

oh it's a laptop, and usb1.1 too?, sorry i must have missed that bit.
hmmm, i think usb1.1 can only sustain 4x, more likely i got that wrong and it probably can't manage even 4x, can't remember without googling...
