OK, i'll end the suspense. The answer to the question was [bold]142[/bold]. I'm still trying to work out how the caller came up with that answer. The people who design these questions must have the same I.Q. as Einstein or the question is fixed with a made up answer.

    [bold]Closest Answers[/bold]
1st Place goes to "Hursty" with his answer of [bold]167[/bold] which was 25 out.

Joint 2nd place goes to "Alien13" and "romero" with their answers of [bold]116[/bold] which was 26 out.

The rest of you were either way out, not close enough or posted several different answers (ahem Doggy_Bot and others. You know who you are)

    @ ScubaBud
I aggree with your post. The question is dumb and doesn't make sense.

[bold] NEW CHALLENGE IF YOU WANT[/bold]
Come up with a theory on how to get the answer 142.

    [bold]For UK Afterdawn Members[/bold]
If you have SKY +/SKY DIGITAL go to Channel 166 as this is the channel i'm talking about which gives away money for answering questions. They are on air from 10am - 2am every day. Or go to http://www.thegreatbigbritishquiz.co.uk/ which is their official website.

P.S. I hope i'm not breaking the advertising rule.

    Here we go...

    142-76=66-33=33-7=26 which would equal 76+33+7+26=142

Which means that none of this makes any sense at all and the only way it could would be if by chance there was something left out of the original question like "If you traveled, etc.

I still think this is a prime example of why the US wanted to pullout from Britain... Hugh communication gap!!! <G>

Have a good weekend all!!! :)

i told you already, these shows ar a rip off,big style,
they never give any reason for the answers

by law, these quiz shows have to answer a so called "call" every few minutes, sometimes the phone will ring and you get some right dumbass on the line, and you just know its someone "acting" for the show, and sometimes they answer the phone "within the time limit",and the phone goes dead,(what a coincedence)
these quiz shows must make ££££££

i like to watch them for amusement value, see all the suckers getting ripped off by phoning in.thats if you get through, normally its a recorded message saying "better luck next time",and that cost you a £1!!!,or whatever they charge
i onced proved my thoery,i took a video still of a picture they were asking questions on,(i.e count the triangles),my answer was definetly correct, but was no where near the answer thay gave..
these guys should be reported and castrated

    this thread was fun though

    :)))

    and i won...yeeeeeeeehaa

Yea, the easier questions anyone can answer but the prize money is only £30 or £50 but still worth it though if you get through and say the right answer as it only costs £1. I suppose they don't bother to explain the answer as they could in theory use the same question again a few months later and make even more money.

Ok... Like I asked in another thread:

Why would we not be here on earth today if water didn't expand when frozen, something not common with liquids?

    the oceans would freeze.

frozen water is less dense that liquide so the ice floates and protects the rest of the water from freezing.

i believe thats the answer your looking for.

    :)

Basically and simply put, correct. If water would contract like other liquids, it would have sunk to the bottom of the ocean continually and never have the opportunity to melt. The oceans would be completely frozen without a chance to thaw, and life as we know it would not exist. Nice to know that since water is the number one source of life, it has properties totally unique to other liquids. <G>
