Can I use a rw as my dvd rom?

I am just curious, I think the laser on my GD-5000 Hitachi DVD Rom is going out, I have another RW that I can swap it out with. The question I have is, do I have to have 1 RW and 1 Rom or can I have 2 RW's to rip files to my hdd using the RW set as master to act like a dvd rom? Sorry if this a true newbie question but I just don't know.

You could give it a try. Sometimes having two writers on the same ide channel can cause write errors, but you'll never know until you give it a try.

Also, one downside is most dvd burners rip much slower than dvd roms.

Thank you flip218...I guess I will just have to be patient and get a new DVD Rom. I have a Hitatchi GD-5000 that use to be able to read burned dvd's but now it won't and from various sites I have ascertained that it is too old to really try to do anything with it.
