Nephilim is right. You came in the wrong door. That said...

That DVDXCopy sure drives a lot of Newbies up the wall. I think a lot of folks came to the forums for the 321 problems. I've had my nightmares with the stuff. But I'll let you in on a little bit.

First how many players have you tried playing the recorded disc in. You can use DVDShrink for a quick check to see if the disc is recorded properly. Just put it in Shrink like you would any movie disc and see what you get. DVD Shrink is a free program that is better in a lot of ways than X Copy, my opinion. The manuals of operation are here at AfterDawn and some in depth ones can be found at doom9.org. You can download DVD Shrink from this site to. Check out some of the other free offerings. You can read some of the threads in the forums to get an idea of whats what.

Without going a lot further before you check your disc, let me tell you that not all players will play DVD R discs and some will play -R and not others. And XCopy recorded a movie of mine. For some reason the movie wouldn't show the video on my PC and would play on the home unit. Usually that happens the other way around.

Do the check and get back, unless you found your answer at DVCXCopy AfterDawn. Beware of multiple postings of same question, it's frowned upon.

Oak, the two fellows are right. I had the same problem DVD XCopy Platinum. I just could not get it to back up anything. Talked to their tech and removed about everything from my PC per their instructions. Still did not work.

I found out about Shrink/Decryptor/Nero on After Dawn.

Now XCopy is off my computer and the software is decorating my library. Looks good and works there>>>> LOL.

My personal choice is ANYDVD/Nero Recode 2. Wonderful program but of course both are not free.

There is a free program that is almost the same as ANYDVD and that is DVD43. Can get if also free off After Dawn. Nero 6 Ultra latest addition has all the programs in it and ;you can get it on some sites for 49.00. Wonderful burn program.

Oak, if you want to go the free route you can't beat
Shrink and burn with DVD Decryptor, also free off After Dawn. They work and are easy to set up and use if you follow the many guides on forums.

They are on my computer and I used them occassionally

Doesn't look like oak is coming back. Lets not be too harsh on DVD X Copy. It is one of my better programs. In fact I have both versions on my PC. They both work exceptionally well now that I know about the software interference issues. I have just about every program that is known to interfere with the Platinum. I turn them off and all works well. I know that doesn't work for everyone.

I especially like the [Advanced] function where you can record the movie only and retain the menu function. I heard DVD2One and Recode2 would do the same. Those programs are a lot more load on a PC and not everyone can use them.

Recode requires 800 MHz CPU and 64MB RAM. That's a good bite out of the resources of an older PC. The Nero burning ROM is a different issue, it can run in a 300MHz-64MB environment. So, the Burning ROM can work with editing programs in smaller computers.

I like the AnyDVD - Recode2 setup to. The issue with that is a user has to have a big processor and a lot of RAM. For small PCs you are right again. The freebies, DVD Shrink, and DVD Decrypter are hard to beat with Nero as the burner. AnyDVD is a good ripper to accompany any program that needs it.

Another good freebie is Daemon, an emulator. You can run a search here at afterdawn and learn about it. Works good for dealing with ISO files and Decrypter and Shrink reads it like a disc.

I have all of these and use them all at some time or other. They all have strong points and drawbacks.

brobear, wish I could get it to work. Hate to pay for it and not use it. I have shrink, nero, decrypter, clone dvd burn programs loaded. Do any of them interfer with platinum?

    You got any pointers?

Yes you can do the movie only and keep the menu in recode. You can also delete anything you don't want and you get a message that says this feature has been removed or whatever you want it to say.

[bold]Below is a tech list for the Platinum. Some of these might be helpful. I might be of some assistance if you want to try to get the program working. Obviously, you're burning with other software, so it would just about have to be interference. [/bold]

The following programs can cause problems while using our software. Your situation sounds like one of these are installed:

    1. B's Clip: This package will load a packet-writing software that will constantly talk to your CD/DVD writer, and can cause a number of issues while trying to write a disc. Disabling this software is not enough, as a portion of this package is always running after you start Windows. You will need to uninstall it in Add/Remove Programs, then reboot to remove it.

For more information, visit the B's website at http://www.bhacorp.com.

    2. Direct CD or Drag to Disk: These are applications from Easy CD Creator from Roxio. This package will load a packet-writing software that will constantly talk to your CD/DVD writer, and can cause a number of issues while trying to write a disc. Disabling this software is not enough, as a portion of this package is always running after you start Windows. To remove them you need to go to Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel. There you can select Easy CD Creator to Change - not Remove. Then you click next until it gives you the option to Modify. Then either Direct CD or Drag to Disk should be selected and changed to "make this option not available". Then click Next. While the program may look like it is installing, it is actually removing those options.

For more information, please visit Roxio's website at http://www.roxio.com/en/support.index.jhtml

    3. GoBack: This is backup software that constantly runs in the background (Terminate and Stay Ready) which not only needs to be turned off, but disabled. Unfortunately, this may cause some restore points to vanish, but it will free up a lot of hard drive space.

For more information visit Symantec's web site for GoBack at http://www.symantec.com/goback/index.html

    4. DLA: Also HP-DLA, Veritas DLA, and others. DLA stands for Disk Letter Assignment. This package will load a packet-writing software that will constantly talk to your CD/DVD writer, and can cause a number of issues while trying to write a disc. Disabling this software is not enough, as a portion of this package is always running after you start Windows. You will need to uninstall it in Add/Remove Programs, then reboot to remove it.

    5. InCD: This is packet writing software that comes bundled with Ahead Nero Burning Rom.

For more information go to Nero's website at http://www.nero.com/en/

    6. Interactual Player and PC Friendly Player: These programs are DVD software viewers that often come on DVD movie discs, and will try to install themselves everytime you watch a movie on your computer. Please make sure to NOT let these install. Both programs interfere with all 321 Studios software and should be un-installed from Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel when found. In some cases, you will need to uninstall and reinstall our software to restore functionality after removing one of these.

For more information about both players, visit http://player.interactual.com/

    7. McAfee Anti-Virus: This is anti-virus software that when running, can cause errors. It needs to be disabled by right clicking on the icon in the lower right side of the task bar. The 321 Studios software then needs to be restarted. Whenever you are using our software, McAfee needs to be disabled to ensure unrestricted access to your drive.

For more info go to McAfee's website at http://us.mcafee.com/default.asp

    8. Norton Anti-Virus: This is anti-virus software that when running, can cause errors. It needs to be disabled by right clicking on the icon in the lower right side of the task bar and the automatic updates should be disabled. The 321 Studios software then needs to be restarted. Whenever you are using our software, Norton needs to be disabled to ensure unrestricted access to your drive.

    The Norton Website is http://www.symantec.com/

    9. StopZilla: StopZilla can hinder required portions of our installer, causing the software to fail. Please completely disable StopZilla, then install our software. Once our software is installed, you may safely enable it again. If you have any difficulty using our software at a later time, you may need to disable StopZilla before going to use our software. Uninstallation is not required.

    10. MyStorageGuard: This backup software can hinder certain required files from being copied during the installation. Please disable this program before installing our software, and have it disabled any time you go to use our software. Uninstallation is not required.

    11. Napster 2.0: This software includes some basic burning software that can cause burning problems if it is running. You will need to close this program completely before trying to use our software. In some rare cases, you will need to completely uninstall this package to attain full reliability, so if disabling does not solve your issue, please try uninstalling this software, and try again.

    12. Easy CD Creator 4.x: Due to the age of this package, it is no longer updated by the authors. There are bugs present in this older system that will cause NUMEROUS problems on your machine, not just with our software. Please Uninstall completely, and consider either the new 6.x version from Roxio (http://www.roxio.com) or Nero 6.x (http://www.nero.com). These packages, installed without the Packet Writing software (DirectCD/Drag to Disk/InCD), all work very well together with our software.

    13. NTI FileCD: This program has packet writing software installed with it. This package will load a packet-writing software that will constantly talk to your CD/DVD writer, and can cause a number of issues while trying to write a disc. Disabling this software is not enough, as a portion of this package is always running after you start windows. You will need to uninstall it in Add/Remove Programs, then reboot twice to fully remove it.

For more information go to NTI FileCD's Product page at http://www.ntius.com/default.asp?p=cdmaker/filecd_main

Thanks for all this,,,,,But looks like tyoo much trouble for me.

I think 321 should make their software like other software that does not interfer with so much other programs that you need on your computer.

    Thanks anyway

That was what they sent me, thought I,d put it out there so folks could see the list of software to see if they had any.

Just to see if that might be the problem for sure. Try using the msconfig as instructed in the bulletin. Turn off the programs as mentioned and see what happens. You may not even have to delete any programs. I'm thinking I could have just removed the INCD and all would have been okay. But as I said, I was downloading the new Nero anyway.

I only deleted INCD from Nero. Just went into Add delete programs and deleted it. Its listed separate from the rest of Nero. I was downloading the new upgrades from Nero. Which reminds me, Nero has a bunch of new upgrades if you haven't been to the site in a few months, free. Any way, I deleted the whole Nero program suite, I was downloading the new one anyway. Kept the serials in case the computer didn't remember. Deleted the Platinum so I would have a clean boot. I just deleted the 2 programs and reinstalled them with DVD X Copy installed last. I didn't reactivate the INCD in Nero. I have Roxio on the computer instead. Roxio is one of the offenders, but I have no problems just exiting out of the program. Everything has worked fine since. All I do now is exit these programs when I start to use Platinum: the internet explorer (get off the web), the anti virus software, Roxio and drag to disk. Everything has worked for months and I've burned a bunch of discs with the Platinum.

I bought the retail version of "DVD-X-COPY" before the injunction. Prior to that, I had never tried backing up a DVD before, and I found this to be an excellent piece of software for making basic copies. When I got a little more experience in backing up disks, I realized that this software lacks many features. I was planning to 'upgrade' to Platinum to get some of these features, but when I found out how much that would going to cost me over and above what I already paid for X-COPY, I started searching for other software. I ended up using dvdshrink and burnatonce (both free) and this combination does everything I need.

btw, if anyone wants the original version of "DVD-X-COPY" (retail CD with box etc.), let me know.

Yes, everything comes back up after a reboot or when you enable all. Just follow the directions closely and there will be no problem. I have never had to use that command to get the XCopy to function. I was one of the lucky ones that got to remove a program I don't use and just turn a couple of others off.

Giving away an old copy of 321 Studio Software would be a trick. I have the Platiunum and still use it for some tasks. It can be a trick to keep going sometimes. It has good quality and easy controls once learned. The problem is activating the software, 321 won't activate the old stuff with a ripper; or they wouldn't the last time I checked. Here is just one of many threads discussing software other than DVD Shrink. Some free and some not. http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/1/90470
There is a lot of good software out there. The problem is, some of it has to be purchased.

I just received X-copy paltinum 4.0.3. and am glad to hear that you are having great success with the program. Which DVD burner are you using and with what media? I'd hate to purchase a dvd burner just to find out that platinum won't recognize it. Also what's your opinion on the quality of the burns. Thanks!

I'm starting to find some interesting bad habits of XCopy at this late date. Seems there is something about some of the Disney movies that stop XCopy from recording. Fails to work with a Disney and then I insert another movie and XCopy functioned flawlessly. This has happened a couple of times lately. I've been backing up Disney movies for the kids. The movies that wouldn't record with XCopy would work with Recode2. So it wasn't a bad disc.
