hello to the great afterdawn community!

i have bought a second-hand fully modified (via mod chip smartxx) with xbox media center already installed. it's working fine, from what i've been able to test upto now. have tried all games that i got and it plays copied dvds fine.
i checked online and there is the weekly updated xbox media center, and mine is v1.1.0 which is very old, and dates back to 2005. i want to upgrade my xbox to the latest XBMC version. but i cannot connect my xbox to my PC.
i have checked the manuals on this site, but i do not have internet access, except for an internal v56K modem, and a LAN card, with ethernet cable. i have already connected my xbox, with an ethernet cable from the latter to my PC's LAN card, but nothing happens, i mean, there is no popup or anything. i am using Windows XP SP2. i have been reading a lot for more info, and i know i have to use FTP to overwrite the old XBMC files with new ones, but i just cannot figure out how to access my xbox, that is, if it is correctly connected, without my having a router or hub, for that matter.

one more thing; it does not play anything from CDs, not even audio CDs. why?

Thanks a lot for your help.

You'll need to use a crossover cabled a regular ethernet cable won't do it, i have had the same problem so i just use my router, search for forums on the difference between a crossover and ethernet cable.
