I have a dvd-a player and connected it to my receiver using 6 channel connections. On the main menu, I hear audio. However, when selecting high res digital or stereo, nothing.

What kind of dvd-a player is it (name and model)?
You're using the Multi-Channel mode (with Denon receivers, it's EXT. IN), instead of DVD mode, right?

It is a pioneer 563A. It appears that only the REM and Seal dvd-a's don't put out audio in high res. Why?

Also had this problem with Jackson Browne's Running On Empty until I updated the 563A firmware to 1.906. Not sure where to get it anymore. Try googling. If I can find mine, I'll post it somewhere (Yousendit?) later.

Found the firmware update. If anyone wants it, I can email it to you.

I also have the 563a. Very good player.
There was a known issue with some dvd-a discs. That may be what you're experiencing. I never got the firmware updated, because Pioneer won't give it to us. They want us to send in the player, and I'm not willing to be without that long.

Also make sure the discs say "Multi-Channel" on the packaging. They may just be stereo discs.

This is a known issue with the 563(USA) and 565(European) player.
They are the same player just different numbers.
There are a LOT of discs that these will not play because P{ioneer did not bother updating to include the DVD-A book revision 1.25, and any titles authored with the MEI/Sonic package after this revision will not play properly - you get silence on output.
    Other titles affected:
    Tommy (The Who)
    Electric Warrior (T-Rex)
    Most Neil Young titles
    Queensryche
    The Doors Perceptions set

Another problem with this player is that all below 200Hz gets routed to LFE in DVD-A mode. This is wrong.

There is a firmnware update available, but it was never made publicly available because whilst it mends this, it breaks other things.

The firmware update provided by powerq solved the problem. Thanks!

What other things does it break? Thanks.

Various SubPicture Highlights that did work on the original firmware stopped working.
There were others, but it has been a lot of years since I ditched the Pioneer for a better player & I cannot remember all.
I will see if I can find the old emails to pioneer.

    Can you recommend another player?

Whoo - that really is a loaded question!
Depends on your budget, and what you need from the player.
    I have 2 denons here: the 2910 & the 3910.
Both now replaced by the 2930 & the 3930 and both excellent.
HDMI/Firewire out for DVD-A/SACD digital to amp, 6RCA analogue, Component out, SACD/DVD-A/HDCD/DVD-V, DVD+R/+R DL/-R/-R DL etc etc.
Only issue is the famous Denon problem of cutting off the first 19 or so frames from a direct chapter entry or track entry.

I have had more players than I care to think about - and most have issues somewhere or other. With Denon, they regularly update the firmware to get round problems and do not obsolete players as often a most manufacturers do.
Panasonic RP-91 is supposed to be excellent but is not available here in the UK so I cannot say for sure.
Avoid Yamaha - I had an S1500 that would not play certain pressed DVD at all.
Onkyo are also supposed to be great, but again I cannot say for sure.
Pioneers Elite range are also recommended by those who have them.
