when I tried to safely remove my external hard drive, i got a message "Windows can’t stop your Generic volume device because a program is still using it". although I checked the Task Manager and there was no program running. My OS is Windows 7. Could someone help me? Thank you in advance

close windows explorer if you are using it to access the external drive.

I set all my externals for quick removal & disable write caching, not that it helps much i still get the message you get however it does mean i can remove them regardless if the safe to remove message doesn't come up,windows really is a useless OS when it comes to external removal, linux doesn't seem to have the same issue ejecting drives it pisses me off
