My efforts to get assistance through the Nero website have been unsuccessful, but CCampbell appears to be very helpful, so here goes.

I have an MCE P.C. and have been recording TV in dvr.ms format. I wanted to edit the programs and Nero appears to allow this. I edited. I burned. Burn completed and...I have been left with unplayable discs. Other items burned through Nero have been successful. I burned a dvd of a small file thru MCE successfully. Any thoughts? If you (or others) do respond, I will gladly paste the log here.

    Hi NYBrit,

When you say the disc's are 'unplayable' could you be more specific?

NVE3 does support DVR-MS files as source files, and I have worked with them before without problems.

Are you able to play the disc back on the MCE PC? But fail to play back on any DVD Player?

    Regards

    Thanks for responding.

They do not play anywhere. When I run the info tools utility, it shows no disc in the drive. MCE is currently writing although the files are huge--I (along with many other people that have made comments on various boards)am just looking to trim the files down and remove surplusage.

When I have attempted to do this with Nero, I can see the video in the preview screen, but the discs burnt have gone nowhere so far. In contrast, I have had no problems with video from non MCE sources. I hope the log helps, but if you give me direction, I will be glad to try additional steps.

    Thanks again.

just a guess ... but do you have the full nero version? or an oem version?

Cause I believe the oem versions don't have the dvd plugin.

Let me look into this again tomorrow, it's been awhile since I last worked with a DVR-MS file.

I do know that in the past I had creatd some content from DVR-MS Files, and the Video was perfect, but no audio.

And on our website under NVE New features we have a footnote at the bottom that states "Depending on the system configuration this may not work for all DVR-MS files"

When I asked one of our Egineers about this, he responded back with "Normally it should work on a PC with MCE. But the files are very strange and support is difficult."

After receiving that response, I had one of our Tech's who has an MCE system at home test NVE3 on his system, to see if he could Import, Edit, and Burn DVR-MS content to DVD-Video using NVE3, and it came out perfect with both Video and Audio.

I then tried to take these same files on a non-MCE system and I was able to duplicate the issue with a Video that contained no Audio.

But let me test this again so I can refresh my memory on the issues.

    REgards,

    Craig

I appreciate your efforts. i noted the footnote, but, from your comments, it appears that it can be done. Moreover, based on what i have seen on message boards, it is something Ahead/Nero should be doing because there is a market!

look forward to hearing your comments/suggestions. And if I can be a guinea pig on this, let me know!

Well, I've had some intersting results to say the least in my recent testing of DVR-MS files using NVE30118.

First, I tested three DVR-MS files I obtained from our team in Germany. They are just Video captured from an early MCE system of TV Shows.

I imported all three DVR-MS files, and simply burned to DVD. No editing or anything done to them. IN preview mode all plays fine in NVE3.

But the burned DVD comes out very weird. On the first two Videos, the video is perfect. But the audio is really 'twisted'. When I start playing the first video, the sound that is played is from the second video. And when I play the second video clip, the sound is from the third video. Its not like the audio is overlapping, the sound is good, just not synced up to the correct video. And when I play the third video, I get a black screen with the sound from the first Video. This occurs even if I burn the outcome to the Hard Drive first as Video_TS, so it's not the burn process, just the encoding.

So, I then imported only one of the DVR-MS files, and tried first burning to Hard Drive, and exporting to MPEG or AVI format. The Video is perfect, and now I get the right audio, but it's not synced up with the Video.

So then I took three DVR-MS Files created by one of my Tech's on his MCE system at home. And with his files, I have absolutely no problem on the same system I tested with the DVR-MS files from my colleagues in Germany. The Video is perfect, the audio is synced up, and associated with the correct video format.

I can even go in and edit out the commericals, add transitions, my own audio, and Video and Text affects without any problems.

I can not find any physical differences in the DVR-MS files my Tech created, and those provided by our colleagues in Germany. But there is obviously something going on in regards to how the files are created, or the system they are created on.

The MCE system in Germany was one of the very first systems that came out. WhereAs the MCE system my Tech used is only a year old.

I'm still looking into this issue, but thought I should post my findings as of to date.

    Thanks Craig.

It certainly appears to be a conundrum. The latest attempt I made seemed to be going fine, I could see the video in the preview screen and the dvd was burning but it failed. I hope that the log I posted may provide some clues. My machine is a month old so it would be great if I could end up with the better experience that you had.

Awaiting your next update with interest! good luck Sherlock!

    Hi NYBrit,

That is a straight forward 'Write Error' and the first error message you get is a "KEY_MEDIUM_ERROR" which indicates problems with the media.

I would try another brand of media, as I believe you have the latest firmware for your recorder already.

The only other likly cause would be dust on the media or optical head.

    Thanks Craig

I doubt that it is the media becuase I have used the same discs without a burn problem to date, but I will experiment. I'll also get a lens cleaner!

I wish that my dvr.ms issue was as simple!

Good call Craig. After one cleaning of the lens, the dvd burned first time. Now if only you can get my dvr.ms to be edited burned..........:)

Alas, I spoke too soon. It looks like there may be issues with the burner--Philips 8631--I found a post elsewhere on this site that talks about simil;ar problems. Basically, it appears to be burning when it feels like it!

Burning at a 8X speed will often cause problems, even when using good quality disc's and everything else is working fine. You will find the majority of people on this forum who do a lot of DVD burning, would recommend burning at a maximum speed of 4X.

Just because they make burners and disc's that will allow burning at faster speeds, the reliability of doing so is still basically not proven.

    Hi NYBrit,

In regards to the DVR-MS issues, I'm coming to the conclusion that the problems with these files are dependant on what version of the MCE Operating System is being used to create the source DVR-MS files.

The DVR-MS files that I never have any trouble with are coming from Microsoft Media Center Edition 2005.

The DVR-MS files that I always have trouble with are coming from Microsoft Media Center Edition 2004.

What version do you have NYBrit?

I note what you say, but I think the problems run deeper than that, based on what numerous other Dell customers are saying---there is a 6 page thread regarding problems with the Philips 8631 with customers being made to jump through hoops before the drives are replaced. My problems have been intermittent but persistent--the drive unable to recognize a disc one minute but able to the next.

    Craig:

My MCE is 2005--it is brand new as of the end of December 2004. I wonder if we are dealing with problems with the burner--see my posts above.
