    First post here...

I have an HP Media Center 470n. The DVD-RW, CD-RW is an HP DVD Writer 400c.

I have never had a problem burning before. Now, in all programs (Winamp, XP Burning, etc.) I cannot make a CD. It seems that everytime I try, it says that it indeed does complete. However, when I try to play it, it is blank. I have watched Winamp burn a CD and it usually gets to 27% on the first track and then says complete. If I use Windows XP to burn using the Writable CD Folder, it always gets to the end and says 5 sec left. Then it gives an error and the disc is again useless.

The only thing I have installed recently is Windows Media Player 10. I have since uninstalled it. Any suggestions?

    Thanks in advance,
    Patrick

I have uninstalled the controllers and drives. Rebooted a million times and still no success. Is it possible that the drive is just dead? How can I test for that?

I have tried both CDs and DVDs. No luck...

I have a warranty at Best Buy and am tempted to take it in for them to look at.

I'm having the same problemss with my NEC DVD combi burner on my Dell laptop.

    Sense: 03 ASC: 0C ASCQ: 00 (Command 2A)
    -------------------------------------------------------
    px.dll: 1.1.0.424
    pxdrv.dll: 1.0.43.0
    pxmas.dll: 1.5.0.132
    pxwave.dll: 1.2.0.94
    pxwma.dll: 1.0.0.3

I've tried everything I can think of bar take it back to Dell attached to a handy window brick and re formatting the thing.

Looking at Poleary's problems they are identical to mine, and I have installed Media player 10 but this wasn't working before that.

I have SP2 installed but can't remember if this was knackered before or after I updated.

I have also installed CD HiMAT support - This extension allows you to create HighMAT CDs of your digital photos, music, and videos optimized for viewing on consumer electronic devices and player software. HighMAT CD Writing offers easier navigation and preserves important information about your music, photos, and videos like song name, artist name, album name, and genre. After you install this item, you may need to restart your computer. But have since removed that to no effect.

I am stuck for ideas so if anyone has a good plan please let me know.

(I don't want to remove SP2 but will if we can't come up with a better idea.)

    Thanks

I have uninstalled SP2 and WM 10. Didn't work. I went back to older configs, didn't work. The drive will read DVDs and CDs, just not burn them. Is it possible it is a laser problem? I will try to other suggestions mentioned here as well.

I tried pulling SP2 off and that hasn't helped.

I have another laptop I can try my burner in to see if its a hardware or software fault.

I will post my findings, but hopefully I won't have to reformat... hate doing that its soo boring. ;)

I have updated my ASPI and still no difference. I tried to play a CD on it tonight. It plays a song for 3 seconds, pauses, plays 5 more seconds, pauses, over and over and over.

    ??? any ideas ???:

I just purchases an HP Media Center M1072n and am experiencing the same exact problems as you all. I emailed HP Tech Support and they told me to do all the normal crap. "reinstall drivers" "try doing this...try doing that" Nothing I have tries is working. NEC sucks

All righty then, results of my testing.

Removed my drive from my laptop and swapped it with a standard Dell type cdrw thing (not sure of make). Stuck it in and comp picked it up without a problem and I was able to burn a cd off without a problem.

So I thought it was my DVD drive that was knackered as by taking that out of the loop everything else appears to be working.

As a test I tried to burn off a cd using the other laptop I have available to me using MY dvd drive thing. The strange thing is that I was able to burn a cd without a problem there too.

This can only point to software problem on my laptop relating to that DVD drive as both will work correctly independant of each other.

Only thing left for me to do if reinstall windows and see if I can burn once again.

    :-/
