circuit city cables vs walmart cables worth the money?

when buying regular speaker wire i know there is no real difference in the brand its all about the resistance and gauge of the wire. but with hd hook ups i'm clueless. if i buy a twenty dollar phillips optical cable from walmart will it really sound worse than if i bought the sixty/seventy dollar optical cable from circuit city? same with componet cables and everything like that. is there really much difference?
