If you're talking about audio cleaning, try Goldwave.
It has a variety of filters and is very user friendly.
    Good luck.

I have been trying to find tips and tricks, etc when using the M402U and have not had much luck.

If anyone could point me to a good resource it would be appreciated.

What other software can be used with this unit (and works and plays well with it) ?

    Thanks!

There isn't.. this is because the special settings
the "402U box" needs, compression rate etc.
otherwise you should buy something like the ADVC100,
but then you must (software) encode to mpeg2 yourself,
but that is not why you decided to buy the 402U in the
first place, (realtime to mpeg2 encoding, and no long waits)

    Thanks for the reply.

After I posted this I did some reading in the divx.com forums and someone from Plextor posts there frequently.
He discussed various updates that included the possibility that other apps would be added in the future.

At least this is a new device, so we should be able to look forward to greater compatability.

The down side is the user base is relativley small, so there aren't a lot of resources out there yet.

As a Windows 2000 user (not for much longer) not very many programs work well for me, but I can say that Womble MPEG-VCR is flawless in cutting and pasting MPEG1 & MPEG2 files from the Convertx. You can demux, then apply your filters using any number of programs, then mux.
I have also found that DVDx v2.2 does a good job of conversion to avi.
Apparently VirtualDub does a good job of editing Divx files saved by this device.
I have had good luck capturing VHS, but find it is better to apply technology before the signal gets to your computer, rather than trying to clean it up later. VHS really isn't very good.
A friend of mine who creates video presentations for a small organization has recommended Adobe Premiere's filters for cleaning up my VHS captures of things like weddings, where conditions are less than ideal. Will by trying that soon.

The 402U unit delivers a good standard MPEG2 file,
so any good Mpeg editing software can be used,
you should checkout if it degrades much afterwards,
that's the disadvantage of editing Mpeg material,
it's always for the best to edit first (AVI) and
later compress, but the 402U unit captures and compresses directly in mpeg2.
A avi capture option would be nice....

That's what i said, the unit only captures in mpeg
1 or 2, and you can only start a capture with the
software that comes with it, or a custom Studio8
package. and only capture directly in mpeg options will work. other wise, you should use a device like the DAC100 (DataVideo) or ADVC100 (Canopus) these
devices let you capture in DV-AVI, thats the format whats used on the MiniDV portable video cameras.
It's only very litle compressed (DV avi)
You can't direct capture with the DAC100 or the ADVC100, but when you capture with WinDV to a DV avi (type 2) file you can work with these files in VirtualDub.
But the M402U unit has the advantage of quick capturing, using less hd space (no avi) and you can set it up in combo with a source and pc as PVR use,
a newer model of Plextor has even a analog tv terrestial tuner build-in, a digital sat. tuner would
be even better, but that's a bit too much asked for now i guess.

Here is a quote from a post over at the divx.com forums.
That site is the best resource for info on the M402U since it is one of the few devices out there that is DivX certified.

    Quote:
Here is the software which supports direct capture from the PX-M402U

    Currently available:
    InterVideo WinDVD Creator
    GB-PVR
    GotTV
    Plextor GoCap
    VirtualDub (Edit only, not capture)

To be released week of 10/3
    InterVideo WinDVR
    SnapStream BeyondTV
    Frey Technologies Sage TV
    Ulead VideoStudio 8
    Roxio Easy Media Creator

of course, any video editing or DVD creation software which edits MPEG can edit files captured with the M402U
